Franz Hals exhibition

Born in Antwerp in the late 1500s, Franz Hals went on to become a world-renowned painter. Trained by  Karel van Mander after his family fled Spanish invasion he joined the Haarlem Painter’s Guild and became a celebrated artists, praised, admired and sometimes criticized for his rough and ready style. His distinctive freewheeling painting technique is one of the styles that defined the 17th Century.

In the exhibition, you’ll watch him grow as an artist with a focus on his lively style, one which earned his reputation as a forerunner of impressionism. With around 50 works, you can see the development of his talent and follow along as he broke convention and gained confidence in his ability, as well as uncovering a wider picture of the norms of society at the time.
