Bohus Fortress has one of the most fascinating and turbulent histories of any of the Nordic strongholds

A visit to this protected ruin will teach you of the brutal sieges and their destruction, the power struggles between the Swedes, Danes, and Norse, and their violent wars that all make up Bohus fortress&rsquo; unruly past.

Settled in the picturesque and quiet countryside just 20 minutes from Gothenburg, its present-day experience couldn&rsquo;t be more different from its past!

Did you know

Bohus Fortress was originally called Bagahus, which after time changed into Bahus and then Bohus, which led to the naming of the province Bohusl&auml;n. Bohus is a fortress with unparalleled Nordic history; holding a Nordic record, since its foundation in 1308 Bohus was besieged 14 times by Swedes, Norwegians and Danes &ndash; but the fortress has never been conquered.

Lying on the old Nordic borderland of the G&ouml;ta River&rsquo;s estuary, the area suffered under many power struggles between the Norse, the Swedes, and the Danes. While Bohus today is a peaceful and picturesque experience, back in the day it was a time of turbulence with echoes of bombs resonating throughout the walls and clouds of gunpowder smoke in the air. The fortress has witnessed innumerable stories and scandals of kings, saints, witches, traitors, prisoners throughout its long history.

Originally, Bohus was a simple understated building made of wood before it transformed into a stone castle, using stones from the old fortress on Ragnhildsholmen. Bohus soon became one of the most powerful strongholds in the North, building out its fortress walls, and many stones from demoslished monasteries of the Reformation period of the 16th century were used for its development.

During the nordic Seven-years&rsquo; war, Bohus was besieged six times by the Swedes, as it remained a Denmark-Norway stronghold, but to no avail. It&rsquo;s no surprise then, that after so many sieges the castle needed to be restored, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the 16th century when the Danish King Christian IV ruled that Bohus was transformed into a Renaissance castle, with newly fortified bastions and artillery. Bohus became Swedish after the Roskilde Treat in 1658, and after two brutal months of siege from the Danes and the Norse, the castle was almost back to a ruin of rubble.

Rebuilt as a fortress in the 17th century, it mainly served as a prison, until after the Theatre War in 1788 it was dismantled and a year later the stones were used as building material for the people of Kung&auml;lv and you can still see old Bohus stones in the historic houses along V&auml;stra gatan and &Ouml;stra gatan.

It wasn&rsquo;t until 1838 when King Carl XIV, who wanted to protect Bohus Fortress for its cultural heritage, prohibited any further damage of this historic stronghold. Conservation work took place at the turn of the 1900s and since 1935 it has been protected and considered a significant part of Nordic history.

Permanent collections 

The main collection of art is of international acclaim and showcases work from the 15th Century to the present day. These works are mostly from Europe and the United States, with important Nordic pieces on display as well, unique of its kind dating from the turn of the 19th Century. Here, you can see the collection of Nordic colorists, including Gothenburg colorists, as well as contemporary Nordic art, Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th Century, French Impressionism, international Modernism, and Romantic and Academic paintings from the 19th Century. Hasselblad Center

Founded by Erna and Victor Hasselblad, today the Hasselblad Foundation is a wonderful center to visit to admire up-and-coming photographers, as well as those who are paving the way in new scientific research.

When you visit the Hasselblad Foundation you will be able to see&nbsp;their current exhibitions and library which contains over 16,000 photographic books and catalogs. Visitors are invited to spend time in the library and make use of the wide range of books, as well as the archive of historical material from Erna and Victor Hasselblad&rsquo;s personal collection, such as cameras, photographs, manuals and more.

R&ouml;da Sten Art Gallery offers it all, whether you want to simply admire the art or take part in the workshops and lectures, its goal is to get people thinking about the works and relate them to the lives in which we live.

The non-profit cultural organization was founded in the mid-1990s and is housed in the old boiler house, making it one of the largest contemporary art spaces on the west coast of Sweden, and you can still see old graffiti and marks from the 80s and 90s ravers on the walls.

Today you will find Gothenburg&rsquo;s only legal graffiti wall located outside the building, Draken (The Dragon), which is a 41-m long sculpture by artist Per Ag&eacute;lii. All graffiti artists are welcome to use this space and are invited to do so - even beginners.

The gallery is filled with contemporary works and exhibitions showcasing a wide range of media. The museum is hosts the Art &amp; Design Christmas Fair every year, and previous exhibits have looked at issues on Migration and Identity, the menopause, a Photography Exhibition from Valand Academy and an exhibition of the artworks from the locals of Majorna.

Sports lovers will love the Gothenburg Sports Museum! Founded in 1983 by the Sports Museum Friends Foundation, its impressive collection showcases some of history&rsquo;s most loved Swedish sportsmen from cycling champions, to sailing stars, even the best of table tennis.

Now located in the old military buildings in Kviberg, Gothenburg, the museum has been welcoming visitors since 1983. The members of the Sports Museum Friends Foundation have compiled wonderful exhibits and collections of over 15,000 objects, together with 30,000 photographs, and 5,000 books in the library dedicated to sports.

There are three floors to be explored, each one taking you further along a trip down memory lane with references to former Gothenburg champions and valedictorians of decades past. The Hall of Fame showcases 155 athletes and a new one is added every year.

Learn more about these city vehicles at the Gothenburg Tramway Museum, housed in the old tram depot which was built in the 1930s. Here you can see vintage trams, as well as old memorabilia relating to the tram network and traffic system which runs throughout Gothenburg.

If you&rsquo;re someone who loves to travel around urban areas and appreciates public transport and how a city&rsquo;s system works then the Tram Museum will be a fascinating insight into Gothenburg&rsquo;s infrastructure, past and present. Here you can see around 20 trams which have been saved from the last century &ndash; and 15 of them still work! The really vintage trams are worth paying particular attention to, as well as the collection of old tickets, tram conductor uniforms, and other artefacts in the old depot in G&aring;rda.

After you&rsquo;ve explored the exhibits, you can enjoy a guided tour who will take you around the old trams and answer each and every burning question. The oldest vehicle on display is a horse-drawn carriage from the 1800s and the most recent dates back to 1969. Watch a film about Gothenburg&rsquo;s trolley buses and try out the tram simulator and experience driving a tram.

Kungsportsplatsen is located by the popular Avenyn street, where you&rsquo;ll find many shops and restaurants making this a perfect starting spot. Next to J&auml;rntorget you will find Linn&eacute;staden, affectionately known as &ldquo;Linn&eacute;&rdquo;. Linn&eacute; is a laid-back neighbourhood with a quaint charm. Visit it by day to experience its small shops and caf&eacute;s, and at night for its assortment of restaurants and bars.

At Linn&eacute;platsen, take a short walk to the entrance of Slottsskogen. The fourth stop Haga attracts many visitors all year round. This cosy old district of Gothenburg has many nice caf&eacute;es and boutiques. This is a great little area to spend some time idly strolling around the neighbourhood. A short walk to the Hop On-Hop Off boat (Jun 27-Aug 17) stop &ldquo;Feskek&ocirc;rka&rdquo;. Feskek&ocirc;rka is Gothenburg&#39;s most famous fish market where you can tuck into one of the many freshly caught delicacies of that day. No visit to Gothenburg would be complete without trying a herring &ndash; raw! Ask the locals how it&rsquo;s done.

If you missed the first stop, the fifth will take you back to Avenyn which is a great place to hop off and walk along to admire the beautiful street. &nbsp;At the top, in the G&ouml;taplatsen public square, Carl Milles&acute; statue Poseidon has become a symbol of the city.

The bustling bus and tram junction of Korsv&auml;gen is close to the amusement park, Liseberg, as well as the mind-blowing Universeum which is fun for all the family, and the acclaimed Museum of World Culture. If you have kids make sure to get off at this stop!
