Tips for visiting the Miami Seaquarium

If you’ve never been to Miami Seaquarium before, be prepared to be amazed! When you first arrive at the attraction you will get a map of the park and a list of show times available that day. Use that to navigate through the park and make sure that your family can enjoy everything the park has to offer. Here are some great tips for making the most out of your visit:

  • Get there early. Showtimes will vary from day to day, but the only way to truly get a full experience you will need to be there for at least four hours.
  • Take part in the experiences. Miami Seaquarium offers various experiences where you and your family will be able to swim with dolphins or fishes, enjoy the reef encounter, swim with seals, or be trainers for the day. Your kids will never forget the experience, and neither will you!
  • Don’t miss any of the shows or exhibits. There is a lot to see here, so use the map you received to mark off everything you’ve seen. 
  • Sit in the front row. In the Killer Whale and Dolphin show you will get to see the whales doing tricks, while getting completely soaked by giant splashes. Kids love it!
  • Plan ahead. Miami Seaquarium is actually quite close to a few other great family-friendly attractions and beaches. So, you may want to spend four to five hours at the park and the rest of the day exploring elsewhere.

The best times to visit

South Florida is beautiful almost all year round. The few times you need to be careful is during hurricane season, but as long as you check the news, you’ll be fine. During winter months, South Florida doesn’t get that cold, which means you can take advantage of children's winter break from school.

If you're trying to avoid crowds, do keep in mind that school trip season tends to fall roughly from March to early April. During this time, the Seaquarium attracts school groups in droves.

What you should bring with you
 

  • A towel and/or extra clothes. Many of the shows and activities involve heavy splashing.
  • Extra socks or shoes for the kids, especially if they intend to visit Salty's Pirate Playground.
  • A waterproof or resistant camera or phone case.
  • Sunblock, sunglasses, a hat, etc. Most of the Miami Seaquarium is outside so you'll be exposed to the heavy Florida sun for hours.
  • Water and snacks. While you can purchase these from concession stands in the park, they can be pricey.

What can I see and do there?

Miami Seaquarium has four shows that occur throughout the day and multiple exhibits. Here are the shows and a selection of the most popular exhibits:

Shows

Killer Whale and Dolphin Show

If there’s one show you don’t want to miss it’s this one! Lolita the Killer Whale gives an incredible performance and leaves her audience shocked and soaked. She performs alongside Pacific white-sided dolphins, who do incredible aerial stunts.

Top Deck Dolphin Show

In this show, you will get to see bottlenose dolphins perform incredible acrobatic tricks. You’ll see dolphins leaping higher than you have ever seen before! You can still visit the top-deck dolphins while the show isn’t going on. Occasionally they will even have a baby dolphin swimming in the tank!

Flipper Dolphin Show

Even if you’ve seen the Flipper Dolphin Show before, you have not seen this show. The Miami Seaquarium recently upgraded the show and it’s better than ever. You’ll also get to enjoy a new exhibit at the entrance of Flipper’s Stadium that contains images and memorabilia from the original Flipper television show.

Golden Dome Sea Lion Show

The Sea Lion Show is such a great time for the whole family. In the show, Reef Rangers go on comical adventures with a sea lion named Salty. The entire show is entertaining and also teaches kids about the importance of not littering.

Shark Channel

At the shark channel, you’ll be able to see caregivers feed sharks that are up to 200 lbs. Miami Seaquarium has various sharks of different species and sizes.

Tropical Reef

This exhibit is breathtaking. Here you’ll look into a 750,000-gallon saltwater aquarium that is filled with various reefs, fishes, stingrays, eels. If you are lucky enough to catch the Reef Presentation, you’ll get to watch a diver's hand feed the fishes while listening to an educational narration.

Manatee Exhibit

The Manatee Exhibit allows you and your family to watch and learn about Florida’s magnificent endangered animal. You can even go to underwater viewing areas to see them swimming. If you get lucky there may be a rescued baby manatee there as well.

Seal and Sea Lion Exhibit

At the Seal and Sea Lion Exhibit, you can look at, learn about, and feed seals and sea lions. You can even watch them playing and laying around in the sun.

If you’re heading down to South Florida you should also explore a few other family-friendly attractions.

  • It's just a short drive over to Jungle Island, where you will find animal exhibits and shows that are fun for you and your whole family.
  • If you’re in the mood to take a tour of South Beach check out the famous Duck Tour South Beach. Their vehicles will go through the streets of South Beach and into the ocean.

Try Something Different Whether or not you consider yourself a spiritual person, there’s something quite special about visiting sacred sites on your trip. Standing out as the oldest visitor attraction in the city by a long shot, the Ancient Spanish Monastery is not only a mesmerizingly beautiful place to spend the day but well-recognized for its fascinating and storied past. Construction for this unique site began in 1133 AD, near northern Spain. For nearly 700 years following the initial construction, the monastery was run by Cistercian monks. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the monastery first landed on American soil, after being deconstructed brick by brick. By the mid-twentieth century, two entrepreneurs had decided to buy the stones to put back together, one by one, with the intention of building a tourist attraction – the Ancient Spanish Monastery as it is now known. The attraction has been branded as ‘’the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history’’ by Time Magazine, and we can certainly see why! Though the site’s past is pretty far-fetched, the monastery retains much of its architectural excellence. Upon entrance, you’ll be able to appreciate its hand-carved columns, sweeping arches, and beautiful shrines. Though the collection steers towards emerging artists, the institute’s permanent collection has works by Pablo Picasso, Yves Klein, and Roy Lichtenstein, among others. Whether you’re a modern art aficionado or a crafting geek, you’re sure to enjoy this wonderful bright space. Art galleries are chock-a-block in the Miami Design District, each offering something a little different. Founded in 1998 by ultra-cool duo COOPER and Elizabeth Withstandley, Locust Projects is a non-profit exhibition space for up-and-coming contemporary artists. Built into a bright renovated warehouse which screams cool, the site is a joy to visit and tends to attract the more creative crowd. Since the space encourages innovation and experimentation, you’ll find a wide variety of styles on display here. The staff is knowledgeable and approachable, so don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. We love this spot because it works to provide a great look into where the art scene is heading next. Eat and Drink in the Design District Aside from all of the great creative spaces which the Design District is perhaps best known for, the area boasts some seriously great food stops. In fact, there are so many great places that it would be difficult to list them all, but if you’re looking to sample a few different things, we recommend checking out some of its fantastic food halls. A favorite for locals and visitors alike, one of the area’s most renowned food halls has got to be St. Roch Market, a southern-style stop with all the flavor. Serving up a carefully cultivated mix of local food and beverage talent, this place is a sure winner. Another one of our top picks is MIA Market, known for its gourmet culinary offerings and vibrant atmosphere. Here, you’ll find a tempting mix of cuisines from all across the globe. Whichever you choose to go with here, there’s seriously no going wrong! As if all of the fantastic cultural attractions weren’t enough, the Design District is also home to a great variety of places to wet your whistle. From cool, laidback hangouts to ritzy cocktail lounges, the area has much to offer no matter your style. Whilst the drinks aren’t cheap here, the experience can’t be beaten. For those who are looking for something a little more laidback, we recommend Wood Tavern, a cozy all-American style bar which specializes in quality craft beers. The Design District comes to life after the sun goes down, so we recommend staying to check out some of the area’s fantastic watering holes, such as Sweet Liberty and Jaguar Sun. Learn Something New When travelling, it’s always a good idea to incorporate a little education into your vacation. For this reason, one of our favorite spots in the Design District is the award-winning Haitian Heritage Museum. Since its inception in 2004, the institute has worked to highlight and maintain the rich culture and background of the region internationally, nationally and locally. The institute is known for its carefully-curated and transcending exhibitions featuring everything from historic artefacts and documents to fantastic art and music. Walking around the place, you’ll no doubt be drawn in by everything that it has to show. Combining art, history and culture all under one roof, there’s a lot to see here. Since Little Haiti is nearby, we recommend taking some time to explore this beautiful and complex area of the city – trust us when we say that you won’t regret it for one minute!
