What you'll do

A visit to the Ceremonial Hall in Prague's Jewish Quarter offers a poignant look into the heart of Jewish customs and traditions, steeped in history and architectural significance. Nestled beside the Old Jewish Cemetery, this hall stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Prague's Jewish community.

Constructed between 1906 and 1908 in the elegant Neo-Romanesque style, the Ceremonial Hall originally served as a mortuary for the Prague Burial Society, known as Hevrah Kaddisha. Its architectural grandeur and historical significance are immediately apparent as you step through its doors.

Upon entering, you’ll find the permanent exhibition, Jewish Customs and Traditions, Part 2. This offers a captivating exploration of the history and rituals of the Prague Burial Society, a vital religious and social institution within the quarter. One of the highlights is a remarkable series of 15 paintings from the 1770s, meticulously detailing the customs and ceremonies associated with death and burial. These paintings offer a vivid glimpse into centuries-old traditions, accompanied by silver ritual objects that were once used in these solemn rites.

For those fascinated by the intricacies of history, the Ceremonial Hall provides a treasure trove of artifacts and insights. Among the relics on display are fragments of Prague's oldest tombstones, dating back to the 14th century. Additionally, you can explore memorial prayers for the departed and study a map showcasing preserved Jewish cemeteries throughout the Bohemian lands, offering a broader perspective on Jewish heritage in the region.

On the second floor of the exhibition, you’ll delve deeper into the organizational structure and societal impact of the Prague Burial Society. Here, the focus shifts to the daily life and external representation of this influential group, shedding light on its role within the community and beyond.

Whether for its historical significance, architectural beauty, or cultural insights, this site stands as a must-see destination for travelers seeking to uncover the rich past of Prague.
