As the oldest site in Prague's Jewish Town and the oldest existing synagogue in Europe, the Old-New Synagogue holds a revered place in the hearts of both locals and travelers. For over 700 years, it has served as the main synagogue of the Prague Jewish community, bearing witness to enduring strength and resilience.
Constructed in the late thirteenth century by skilled stone masons from the royal workshop, the Old-New Synagogue stands as a testament to the importance and influence of Prague's Jewish community during that time. Originally known as the New or Great Shul, it later earned the name "Old-New" (Altneuschul) after the establishment of other synagogues in the late 16th century. Legend has it that the synagogue's foundation stones were brought by angels from the destroyed Temple of Jerusalem, symbolizing a sacred bond between the synagogue and its spiritual roots.
The Old-New Synagogue is not only a place of worship but also a place of legends and tales that have captured the imagination of generations. According to one legend, the synagogue was miraculously protected against fire in the ghetto by the wings of angels transformed into doves, while another speaks of the attic of the synagogue as the alleged resting place of the Golem, the mythical artificial creature created by Rabbi Loew to protect the Prague Jewish community.
A visit to the Old-New Synagogue is an opportunity to discover the rich blend of Jewish history, folklore and spirituality that permeates Prague's Jewish Quarter. Whether you're drawn by a love of legends, an interest in religious heritage, or just looking for a moment of reflection, the Old-New Synagogue is a top attraction for any Prague bucket list.
