Capuchin Crypt Experience

What you'll do

Step beneath the streets of central Rome and into a space that’s quietly captivating, slightly surreal, and packed with history. The Capuchin Crypt Experience is unlike anything else in the city—an underground series of chapels decorated with the bones of around 4,000 Capuchin friars. It might sound a little intense, but the result is strangely peaceful and deeply meaningful.

With your ticket and audioguide in hand, you’ll explore six separate chapels, each featuring intricate patterns and symbolic displays created entirely from human bones. It’s not designed to be frightening—it’s a powerful meditation on life, death, and the passage of time. Expect chandeliers made of vertebrae, floral patterns of skulls, and entire walls composed of tibias and femurs.

The experience doesn’t stop with the crypt. Your visit includes entry to the Capuchin Museum, where you’ll learn more about the Capuchin Order and its emphasis on simplicity, humility, and compassion. The museum is home to religious relics, historical artefacts, and even a famous painting by Caravaggio—St. Francis in Meditation—which adds an unexpected artistic twist to the tour.

The audioguide adds thoughtful context as you walk through the space, guiding you through the stories, philosophy, and historical background that make this such a fascinating visit. Whether you're a history lover, a curious traveller, or just looking for something a little off the beaten path, the Capuchin Crypt offers a quiet moment of reflection in the heart of busy Rome.
