Go Beyond the Ordinary with a Pantheon Tour
The guided Pantheon tour offers you an experience unlike any other. Your guide will not only give you an inside look into it’s history but will also tell you stories of Roman Gods and emperors who once held court here. Don’t forget about the 'Oculus,' the central opening in the dome. It's not just a random hole in the ceiling; it's a symbol filled with meaning. Learn more on your Pantheon tour.
Dating from A.D. 125, the Pantheon is known as the 'temple of all the gods'. Most temples are dedicated to just one deity, but the Pantheon was intended to be particularly magnificent from its conception.
When you enter the temple, your eyes will immediately be drawn upwards towards the oculus, a great, 27-foot wide hole at the top of the dome where the sun beams into the room. Even on a rainy day, you'll likely watch in awe as the rain falls inside the building through the oculus. Luckily, a gently sloping floor and 22 well-hidden holes help the water to drain away.
The version of the Pantheon we see today, built by Emperor Hadrian, is actually the third iteration of a religious structure on this site. The previous two versions burnt down nearly 2,000 years ago, but the current structure has clearly stood the test of time and remains incredibly intact considering its mighty age.
Your expert guide will passionately regale you with tales of this marvellous structure, from its history to its construction and the celebrated characters who are associated with it.
Interestingly, nowhere else in ancient Rome was a temple built with a circular dome with a temple portico as the front. What's more, you’ll also learn all about the famous artists and historic figures who are said to be buried inside, as well as how the building transitioned from ancient temple to Catholic Church.
Did you know
- The Pantheon is officially known as the Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres, and Christian worship still happens to this day. It has even been known to host weddings!
- It features the largest unreinforced roof in the world – the dome narrows as it climbs, going from 21 ft. thick at the bottom to just 4 ft. thick at the oculus.
- The Pantheon had largest dome in the world for more than 1300 years until Brunelleschi built his famous Duomo in Florence.
- Famous Renaissance artists are said to be buried in the tomb, including Raphael and Annibale Carracci.
