Including:

  • and more!

White (Christmas) knuckle thrills at Six Flags

Let's kick things off with a Christmas miracle of sorts. Your first thoughts of Christmas in San Antonio might not be of the theme park juggernaut Six Flags, but think again. Because from the end of November to the beginning of January, Six Flags transforms into a winter wonderland.

You'll discover dazzling light displays, live entertainment at every corner, and you've still got all those rides to try. But the jewel in Six Flags' Christmas bonanza is arguably 'The Majesty of Christmas', a stunning reenactment of the nativity, full of songs, animals, and angels literally flying through the air.

And, well, it doesn't get much more Christmasy than that!

Let the songs ring out at the Natural Bridge Caverns

From the tops of Six Flags' tallest rides, we now descend deep into the Earth. While exploring caves might not sound like a particularly festive time, you'll find a rather unique Christmas experience down in San Antonio's famous Natural Bridge Caverns.

Thats' because carol singers who live in the caves dress themselves up over the festive period, ready to sing songs to unsuspecting explorers! Well, we assume they live there; otherwise, why sing there at all? And they're joined by everyone's favorite fat bearded man Santa, who you may well see spelunking down the cavern walls!

When you're done down in the depths, head up top to experience the Natural Bridge Caverns' outdoor playground, including a Christmasy maze, a 30-foot tall Christmas tree, and a walking trail with lots of lights. And if San Antonio's chill gets a bit much, sit down by the campfire and warm up! Easily one of the most unique things to do over Christmas in San Antonio.

Go see the lights at Windcrest

In what has become a Christmas tradition in the city, the Windcrest neighborhood of San Antonio competes to see who has the best home decorations. Head there in early December, and you can admire every house you find. Head there a little later in the month, and the winners will already be picked! So, if you only want to see the best of the best, head to City Hall, pick up a map of the winners, and go see them for yourself!

For over six decades, the fun competition has stood the test of time, with winners outdoing one another every year! You've never seen anything like, it, so it's absolutely worth a visit if you're in San Antonio around Christmas time.

Need a quick and easy way to get around the map? Why not hire an E-bike? San Antonio's winters put many summers to shame, so breezing around on a bike might be just the thing. Burn some of those Christmas calories and get around Windcrest at your own pace. Nice.

Down by the river

Another traditional San Antonio thing is to deck the river with decorations. Starting off life as a religious display to guide the holy family, it has since become a more general Christmas celebration. Now, the San Antonio River is lined with light-covered trees. Over 100,000 of the beauties, to be exact. So, if you want the perfect photo opportunity, head down there and take a walk!

There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and Christmas stalls along the way, should you need to refuel on your adventure. Or, if you fancy adding even more adventure to your trip, why not take a cruise river instead? Walking's great and all, but riding down the river on a boat with the lights surrounding you is something else entirely. Magical. Christmas magic, that's what it is.

Christmas like a cowboy at Don Strange Ranch

If 100,000 Christmas lights just aren't enough lights for you, how about 4 million? Because if you head down to the Don Strange Ranch during the Christmas season, that's what you'll find. 4 million Christmas lights, and plenty more too.

Featuring a mile of lights to drive beneath, a host of Christmasy cowboy rides to try out, and a market full of stalls selling everything from eggnog to s'mores, you'll be all Christmas'd out by the end of it.

If you want to make a day of it and see more of San Antonio's old west side, why not take a tour of Texas Hill County and LBJ Ranch during the day, and then head to Don Strange Ranch at night when the lights are all the more spectacular? Yee-haw!

Christmas, Mexico style, at Historic Market Square!

While many cities traditionally have European-themed Christmas markets, not San Antonio. Oh no. See, San Antonio was once part of Mexico, so they do things a little more southern here. It's still a Christmas market, but not one you've experienced before.

The usual suspects are still in full force - carol singing, Christmas stalls with food and drink, as well as places to buy small stocking fillers. It's just with a Mexican twist. A spicy twist, if you will.

So if you're around over the holiday season, go check it out!

Dazzling lights at San Antonio Botanical Gardens

And finally, because we all really like Christmas lights, why not treat yourself to the dazzling show at San Antonio's Botanical Gardens?

It's a one-of-a-kind display featuring a metric ton of Christmas lights. Lightscape is the real tour-de-force there; a corridor of lights that is sure to put the cheer in you!

And those were our picks of the best reasons to spend Christmas in San Antonio! If you're looking for more fun things to do during your vacation, check out Go City. With our Explorer Pass, you can see San Antonio's best bits at your own pace!

For longer journeys today, try the VIVA Culture route (VIVA 11), which links key attractions.  Late Morning: Tower Above It All  From the river, stroll five minutes south to Hemisfair Park. Here’s where you’ll spot the Tower of the Americas—a mid-century marvel that rockets visitors 750 feet skyward. Zip up in the glass-walled elevator, and you’re rewarded with sprawling urban and Hill Country views. The observation deck gives you a 360-degree panorama, while the breezy outdoor terrace offers a fresh perspective on the city. For an extra treat, check out the 4D theater adventure inside, which brings local legends to life.  Lunch: Tex-Mex Feast  Hungry? Just a short walk from Hemisfair Park, Rosario’s Mexican Café y Cantina stands out for its festive setting and bold flavors. This spot is as popular with locals as it is with visitors. We recommend the piping-hot chili con queso and the brisket tacos—they’re tender, juicy, and just-the-right-side-of-spicy. The restaurant's bright murals and buzzing open kitchen create an upbeat, fun vibe.  Afternoon: Mission Marvels  After lunch, hop aboard a VIA VIVA 40 bus or grab a rideshare south to the UNESCO-listed San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Spread along the San Antonio River, these 18th-century Spanish colonial missions blend awe-inspiring history with serene grounds and striking architecture. Mission San José is especially impressive, with its intricate stonework and tranquil courtyards. Feel free to join one of the ranger-led tours for personal stories and vivid detail that animate the mission’s past.  While here, take a moment to stroll the shady Mission Reach trail—a leafy pathway ideal for stretching your legs and spotting birds. This scenic route links several missions with the river, so it’s a great way to see a quieter part of town.  Dinner: Riverfront Dining  As the sun goes down, return by bus or rideshare to the River Walk’s central plaza. Iron Cactus offers a festive dinner option, serving sizzling platters of fajitas and margaritas made with just-squeezed limes. End your meal with warm churros and a view of twinkling lights reflecting on the water.  Day 2: Animal Magic & Botanical Bliss  Morning: Wild Encounters at San Antonio Zoo  Fuel up with breakfast at The Guenther House in the King William Historic District, famous for its historic riverside setting and pillowy buttermilk biscuits. After breakfast, head north on VIA bus 7 or 9 to the San Antonio Zoo. This 50-acre wonderland is home to everything from majestic lions to mischievous monkeys and the impressively feathered Hixon Bird House. The open-air exhibits and lush landscaping make each encounter feel immersive. The Tiny Tot Nature Spot, designed for kids, is as educational as it is adorable.  Noon: Botanical Garden Beauty  From the Zoo, it’s a pleasant 10-minute VIA bus ride (Line 9) or a quick rideshare to the enchanting San Antonio Botanical Garden. This urban oasis blends inventive garden design with a true sense of Texas place—don’t miss the Texas Native Trail, brimming with plants and wildflowers you’d spot out on the Hill Country. The garden’s glassy Lucile Halsell Conservatory houses everything from desert plants to cascading waterfalls. The atmosphere here strikes a perfect balance between peaceful and inspiring—perfect for a midday recharge.  Lunch: Garden-side Eats  Onsite, the Garden’s Rosella at the Garden café dishes up bright, healthy plates. We love the avocado toast topped with poached egg and the guava-glazed chicken sandwich. Fresh, herb-forward cocktails and shaded patio seating round out the botanical vibes.  Afternoon: Undersea Wonders  In the mood to keep exploring? Hop a bus (Line 9 or rideshare) to SEA LIFE San Antonio. This engaging downtown aquarium is packed with underwater tunnels, hands-on touch pools and displays of rays, sharks and exotic creatures. The highlight for most is walking “underwater”—literally—through the 50-foot-long Ocean Tunnel, surrounded by every shade of swirling blue. It’s equal parts thrilling and relaxing, making it perfect for both adults and curious kids.  Dinner: Pearl District Dining  Your evening is tailor-made for the Pearl District—an area that buzzes with creative energy, farm-fresh flavors and scenic evening walks.  Free Fun: Night Stroll on the Museum Reach  Finish your day by wandering the stretch of River Walk known as Museum Reach. This lush waterfront pathway is dotted with public art, illuminated arches, and the occasional duck. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the glowing river barges floating past, adding a dash of magic to the evening.  Day 3: Adventure Awaits—Nature, Rodeo, and Texas Legends  Lunch: Cavern Grill  After your subterranean escapade, refuel at the Cavern Grill—burgers, fresh salads, and Texas-style smoked brisket are the stars here. Enjoy your meal on their patio, shaded by sprawling oaks.  Afternoon: LEGOLAND® Discovery Center  Head back into town for an afternoon of fun creativity at the LEGOLAND® Discovery Center, located in the Shops at Rivercenter. VIA Metro Bus 17 or a rideshare is your easiest option. This indoor playground delivers the colorful joy of LEGO® building zones, a mini San Antonio skyline, a 4D cinema and kid-friendly rides. The cheerful, bustling atmosphere is a delight, especially for families, but we bet even the grown-ups will be tempted to build.  Dinner: The Buckhorn Saloon & Texas Ranger Museum  Dinnertime calls for a setting that oozes Wild West charm. The Buckhorn Saloon & Texas Ranger Museum, with its walls adorned by taxidermy and Texas lore, fits the bill at the heart of downtown. Order a platter of smoky barbecue ribs or the Texas chili (don’t skip the jalapeño cornbread on the side) and soak in the old-timey atmosphere. After dinner, explore the museum’s outlandish collections—think vintage firearms, outlaw stories, and Texas Ranger memorabilia.  Evening: Rodeo Rhythms  Wrap up your day at Tejas Rodeo Company, hosting Saturday night rodeos March through November. Located just a short ride northwest of downtown, you’ll be swept up in the energy as local cowboys and cowgirls compete in barrel racing, roping, and bull riding. The crowd’s fervor, live music, and traditional barbecue make being here a full-on celebration of Texas spirit.  Day 4: Culture, Science, and Chill Along the River  Morning: Start at The Witte Museum  For your final day, start with culture and science at The Witte Museum. Take VIA bus 7 or rideshare just north of downtown to this family-friendly gem nestled in Brackenridge Park. The museum’s engaging hands-on exhibits explore Texas nature, prehistoric creatures, and innovative science. The H-E-B Body Adventure is a hit for all ages—you can test your balance, measure your vertical leap, and learn some San Antonio health history. Outside, the riverside setting offers fresh air and picnic spots for a peaceful start.  Lunch: Historic Market Square  Head west by bus or on foot to the Historic Market Square—San Antonio’s colorful, festive heart for over a century. Mi Tierra Café y Panaderia is the go-to for a Tex-Mex lunch; don’t miss their handmade tamales and enchiladas, plus the dulce de leche empanadas from the in-house bakery. Bands play live mariachi, papel picado banners flutter overhead, and the neon-lit décor is a feast for the senses.  Afternoon: Free Stroll and Shopping  Meander through Market Square’s bustling lanes, pausing to shop for vibrant handicrafts, local art, or the occasional cowboy hat. Step into El Mercado, one of the nation’s largest Mexican market halls, for a whirlwind tour of flavors, textures and colors.  Walk: The King William Historic District  When you’re done, walk off lunch with a wander through the leafy King William District. Giant oaks shade the streets, and 19th-century mansions once home to German settlers line each block. Pause at Blue Star Arts Complex, an industrial-cool cluster of studios, shops, and cafés along the river—the vibe is creative, chilled-out, and friendly.  Dinner: Alamo Eats  For dinner, make your way to the Alamo Plaza area (a short bus ride or rideshare from King William). The Esquire Tavern, the oldest bar on the River Walk, offers a snug, wood-paneled setting and craft cocktails. The bison burger with crispy fries and a prickly pear margarita are standouts, and the view of twinkling river lights seals the deal.  Last Night: Wind Down on the River Walk  End your trip with one last relaxing River Walk ramble. Linger beneath the lantern-lit cypresses, enjoy a final scoop at Justin’s Ice Cream, and watch boats slip by as San Antonio glows after dusk. This is the city at its friendliest and most welcoming, closing your four-day adventure with a sense of connection to all things San Antonio.    With four packed, flavor-filled, and adventure-studded days, you’ll leave San Antonio with a camera roll full of memories—and a serious craving for another breakfast taco. From storied missions and thrilling animal encounters to riverfront strolls and Texas cuisine, every day here feels memorable.
