san diego

Only have two days in San Diego? No problem. This easygoing city is made for quick getaways, with top attractions, beach views, and amazing food all within easy reach. Whether you’re climbing aboard a historic aircraft carrier, exploring Balboa Park’s gardens and museums, or kayaking along the coast, this two-day itinerary is packed with the perfect mix of adventure and downtime. Let’s make every hour count.

Day 1 – Balboa Park, the Bayfront, and Little Italy

Get curious at Fleet Science Center

Start: 9AM

 ๐Ÿ“ Balboa Park

Your San Diego adventure begins with brain-boosting fun at the Fleet Science Center. Interactive exhibits, a mind-bending illusion zone, and the wraparound IMAX Dome make it a hit with all ages. It’s playful, educational, and a great place to ease into your day, especially if you’re travelling with kids or just love hands-on experiences.

๐ŸšŒ Getting there: Take the #7 bus from downtown to Park Blvd & Village Place—an easy walk from there.

Explore Balboa Park’s gardens, museums, and free gems

Time: 10:30AM

There’s no need to rush. Balboa Park is huge—and home to 17 museums, multiple gardens, street performers, and fountains. Choose one or two museums to dive into.

๐ŸŽจ Art lovers: Try the San Diego Museum of Art or Mingei International Museum

๐ŸŒฟ Nature fans: Wander through the Japanese Friendship Garden or the free-to-enter Botanical Building.

๐ŸŽถ With kids: Pop into the San Diego Model Railroad Museum—miniature cities and tunnels galore.

Refuel with a pit stop at Daniel’s Coffee, hidden in the courtyard by the Visitors Center—great espresso and peaceful surroundings.

Climb aboard the USS Midway Museum

Time: 12:15PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Embarcadero

Next, jump on the #215 bus or grab a quick Uber to the USS Midway Museum. This floating museum is packed with real aircraft, flight simulators, and naval history. Climb through sleeping quarters, listen to stories from former Navy crew, and take in sweeping bay views from the flight deck.

๐ŸŽง Pro tip: Don’t skip the included audio tour—it’s full of personal stories that make the ship feel alive.

Lunch on the waterfront

Time: 1:45PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Portside Pier

Take a few steps over to Portside Pier, where you’ll find plenty of great eats. Brigantine is known for fresh fish tacos and calamari, while Ketch Grill & Taps offers burgers, grilled mahi, and beer flights. Sit outside for views of Coronado Island and the sailboats in the marina.

โฑ๏ธ Allow an hour here—it’s a great spot to relax.

San Diego Zoo in the afternoonย

San Diego Zoo

Time: 3:00PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Balboa Park

Head back to Balboa Park for one of the world’s best zoos. The San Diego Zoo spans 100 acres and houses over 12,000 animals. You won’t see everything in one visit, but you can cover a lot in 2 hours if you hop on the Kangaroo Bus or glide over treetops with the Skyfari Aerial Tram.

Must-sees: gorillas, elephants, red pandas, and the open-air giraffe savannah.

Sunset stroll through Seaport Village

Time: 5:30PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Downtown Waterfront

After the zoo, unwind with a visit to Seaport Village. This quaint harborside spot is full of little shops, live music, and bayfront views. Grab a scoop from Ben & Jerry’s, browse the kite store, or simply sit on a bench and people-watch as the sky turns golden.

Dinner in Little Italy

Time: 6:45PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Little Italy

Walk or take the trolley to Little Italy, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods for dining. Options abound:

๐Ÿ Civico 1845 – modern Italian, known for house-made pastas.

๐Ÿฆž Ironside Fish & Oyster – great for seafood lovers.

๐Ÿ• Filippi’s Pizza Grotto – for old-school charm and giant portions.

Little Italy comes alive at night, so grab a seat outdoors and enjoy the buzz.

Optional: rooftop nightcap

Time: 8:30PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Gaslamp Quarter

If you’re not ready to call it a night, head to ALTITUDE Sky Lounge for skyline cocktails and views of Petco Park—or, for a secretive twist, try the hidden speakeasy Noble Experiment behind a wall of kegs at Neighborhood bar.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Day 2 – Beaches, Boats, and La Jolla Vibes

Breakfast by the beach

Start: 8:30AM

๐Ÿ“ Pacific Beach or La Jolla

Start Day 2 with breakfast by the water. Head to Pacific Beach for acai bowls and coffee at The Mad Beet, or go upscale in La Jolla at The Cottage, which serves up cinnamon roll pancakes and egg scrambles in a leafy garden courtyard.

Kayak sea caves or join a harbor cruiseย

la jolla

Time: 10AM

 ๐Ÿ“ La Jolla or Embarcadero

Option 1: La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour

Paddle past sea lions, into caves carved into the cliffs, and over the vibrant La Jolla Ecological Reserve. This tour is 90 minutes of fresh air and amazing views. You’ll get a little wet, so wear quick-dry clothes and water shoes.

Option 2: San Diego Harbor Cruise

Want something more relaxed? Head back to the Embarcadero for a 1- or 2-hour narrated cruise past the Naval base, Coronado Bridge, and sea lion hangouts. Plenty of indoor seating, snacks onboard, and photo ops.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Both options are available through Go City and require booking in advance.

Free wander: La Jolla Cove and seals

Time: 12PM

 ๐Ÿ“ La Jolla Cove

If you’re in La Jolla, wander over to La Jolla Cove to spot sunbathing sea lions and explore the tide pools. It's a totally free experience—and unforgettable. Walk the scenic Coast Walk Trail for clifftop views and glimpses of the Pacific.

Lunch with a view

Time: 1PM

๐Ÿ“ La Jolla Village or Seaport Village

In La Jolla, try Brockton Villa for epic ocean views and “Coast Toast,” their famous vanilla-infused French toast.

Dive into marine life at Birch Aquarium

Time: 2:30PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Birch Aquarium at Scripps

Set on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, Birch Aquarium is smaller than the zoo—but just as engaging. Explore seahorses, jellyfish, and coral reefs, then step outside to touch tide pool creatures with the ocean as your backdrop. Their conservation work is stellar, and the setting alone is worth the visit.

๐ŸšŒ Getting there: Take the #30 bus from downtown to La Jolla Shores Drive—it drops you within walking distance.

Chill at Coronado Beach

Time: 4:00PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Coronado Island

End your afternoon with a mellow hour at Coronado Beach, easily reached via ferry or a quick drive. The beach is clean, family-friendly, and often less crowded than Mission Beach. Snap a photo of the historic Hotel del Coronado, then roll up your jeans and wade in.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Optional: If you’re travelling with kids, swing by The New Children’s Museum near the ferry terminal before heading over.

Dinner and sunset at Liberty Station

Time: 6:30PM

 ๐Ÿ“ Liberty Station Public Market

For a casual, flavour-packed finale, head to Liberty Station, a former naval base turned foodie paradise. You’ll find everything from Filipino barbecue (try White Rice) to lobster grilled cheese, vegan tacos, and artisanal gelato—all under one roof. There’s outdoor seating and live music on weekends, too.

๐Ÿบ Fancy a nightcap? Grab a beer at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, just a 5-minute walk away.

Two days in San Diego is all it takes to fall in love with this coastal gem. You’ve explored history on an aircraft carrier, wandered through a world-class zoo, kayaked with sea lions, and dined like royalty. Whether you came for the beaches, the science, or the food—there’s always something just around the corner. And the best part? You’ll already be planning your next trip before you board your flight home.
