Visit Lyon Arboretum with Go City®
- Access to all the gardens
- Different native plant species to discover
First opened to the public in 1972, The Lyon Arboretum is home to over 5,000 tropical plant species and native Hawaiian plants. It's a must-do for nature lovers on their Hawaii vacation.
Discover a wide collection of heliconias, gingers, aroids, bromeliads, native Hawaiian plants, and see one of the largest palm collections found in a botanical garden. There are a whole host of different gardens to explore, so take your time to wander, smell, and absorb the beautiful surroundings.
Thanks to an abundant average rainfall of 165 inches, the Lyon Arboretum offers a tropical rainforest setting that's ideal for growing an enormous diversity of plants. And it's not all just about aesthetics, these plants are used in medicine, food, and more. You may even see local students using the arboretum as an outdoor laboratory.
Lyon Arboretum highlights
Inspiration Point - although the slope up to Inspiration Point makes the trail more strenuous than other walks in the arboretum, the lush panorama view makes the trek worthwhile.
The Native Hawaiian Garden - see the collection of indigenous and endemic Hawaiian plants.
Beatrice H. Krauss Hawaiian Ethnobotanical Garden - designed to showcase those plants that were important in traditional Hawaiian culture, some of which continue to be of great importance today such as kalo (taro) and the many flowering plants used for lei.
Bromeliad Garden - the most famous member of the bromeliad family may be the pineapple, but visitors can see many other examples in the Bromeliad Garden. The patterns and colors of the foliage make this garden a year-round visual delight.
The Herb and Spice Gardens - see herbs from around the world and spice trees, including cola nut, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and bay rum.
