Tips for visiting the Eastern State Penitentiary

• There are guide-led tours and discussions every day at 2 pm subject to availability. Be sure to get to the Eastern State Penitentiary early if you would like to attend.
• Decide before you go whether you want to do the full audio tour and then go back and take time to do each Hands-On History exhibit, or, do them as you encounter them along the tour.
• Allow plenty of time as most visitors spend around two hours at the Eastern State Penitentiary.
• Last admission is one hour before closing time.
• Dress for the weather – the Eastern State Penitentiary does not have climate control.

Night Tour hours and availability:

Night Tours: Summer Twilight takes place Thursday through Sunday evenings from May 25 through September 3, 2023 plus Memorial Day (Monday, May 29, 2023) and Labor Day (Monday, September 4, 2023).

Entry begins at 6:00PM and end at 9:00PM.  Once you enter, you are welcome to explore as long as you'd like. The bar in The Fair Chance Beer Garden typically closes at 9:30PM. The penitentiary closes at 10:00PM.

The Egypt Galleries will re-open in two phases – the Lower Level Gallery will open in the Fall of 2026. Our Upper Level Galleries will reopen in 2028.
