Established in 1876, the Weltmuseum - or World Museum - is one of the world’s leading ethnographic museums and takes up the southernmost wing of the stunning Hofburg Imperial Palace.

The museum comprises 14 newly designed exhibition galleries that display unique cultural treasures from all over the world.  The artifacts on display represent more than 500 years of collecting by the Imperial Habsburg family – among them objects from the Cabinet of Curiosities of Emperor Rudolf II, the unique Mexican feather headdress “Penacho”, and objects from the voyages of discovery and research of the 19th century.

The 14 galleries of this wondrous museum link together like a series of stories told as a journey of discovery. A total of 3,127 objects and stunning photographs are on display, often revealing the rather surprising connections between Austria and the world.

Highlights: 

• Feather headdress from Aztec Mexico - early 16th century - made up of quetzal, cotinga, roseate spoonbill, squirrel cuckoo, and kingfisher feathers.
• Feather Temple, James Cook collection, 1779 - a model of a Hawaiian ceremonial house in the shape of a feather temple is the only one of its kind in the world. 
• Two court dwarves, Kingdom of Benin, Nigeria, 14th/15th century - brass statuettes that would have held pride of place on a royal ancestral altar.
• Feather cloak, Munduruku, Tapajós River, Brazil, c. 1830 - acquired by Austrian explorer Johann Natterer who held the most extensive ethnographic collection of his time.
• Mosque Lamps, Egypt or Syria c. 1360 - made of glass with enamel decoration and gilding, these lamps once lived in the state rooms at the Miramare Castle near Trieste.
