Texas Cave Opening to Tourists

Great news out of Texas for outdoorsy folks—Robber Baron Cave is opening to the public for the first time in two years. The cave is rarely accessible to the public and has previously only opened once every 18 months to preserve its structural integrity. Fortunately, its time has come around again this year and it’s opening on September 28, 2019, from 9 am to 3 pm.

Robber Baron Cave is part of a larger network of caves, and is one of the longest caves in Bexar County, Texas, with more than 5,340 feet of mapped interior space. The cave is remarkable for a number of unique distinguishing features: its sinkhole entrance, a complex network of passages, and several distinct underground species.

What is it all about?

Today, this cave is protected in order to preserve its unique geology and history. Now you can visit Robber Baron Cave during this upcoming open house and you are invited to make a donation to help support the TCMA (Texas Cave Management Association). The open house itself is free and open to the public. On your visit, you will learn more about the special history, biology, and geology of this amazing and rarely-seen cave.

Explorers looking for a cave network to explore that’s always open might also want to consider a visit to the Natural Bridge Caverns. Located underneath San Antonio, this network of caverns is the largest in the entire state. Take their Discovery Tour to trek a half-mile underground through this impressive and massive show cavern. See ancient rock formations like stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and many more. You can also opt for lengthier tours that highlight features such as hidden passages with even more wild rock formations, or tours that are illuminated only by the light of your lanterns. They also offer Adventure Tours, which provide the most authentic cave exploration experience as you climb, hike, rappel, crawl, and explore the hidden, non-commercial parts of this massive cave network.
