Things to Do Labor Day Weekend 2015
It’s that one last trip before the school year begins – the last chance to relax and have fun with the whole family. So how do you make the most of this weekend? Take advantage of the nice late summer weather and try out one of our suggestions for things to do on Labor Day Weekend. Whether you’re going out of town or staying close to home, these are some tried and true ideas.
Throw a barbeque
Or any kind of food-oriented get-together, really. If there’s one thing Americans like to do on their holidays, it’s eat. Gather your friends and family together and hang in the backyard, porch, or balcony. Make it a potluck and enjoy a great variety of food, like corn on the cob, cheeseburgers, and fruit salad. (I’m getting hungry just writing about it!) This can also be a perfect chance to get some more use out of your pool before you close it for the season.
Have a picnic in the park

Chicago's Lincoln Park, another great picnic option.[/caption] There’s something quintessentially summer about having a picnic – whether it’s the sandwiches and lemonade or the shining sun overhead, picnics remind us all of the carefree fun that summer represents. While kids always have a blast at picnics, even adults will enjoy a little relaxing quiet time in the park. If you live in or are visiting an urban area, check out a place like Balboa Park or Central Park, which combine the lush greenery of nature with the convenience of bathrooms and playgrounds. They’re safe and clean for picnics, and there are also plenty of other attractions to visit when you’re through.
Go for a bike ride
You’d like the whole family to enjoy the great outdoors one more time before school and work keep you all cooped up. Riding a bike is the perfect outdoor activity that the whole family can get into, and it’s nice healthy exercise to boot! However, if you’re only out of town on a short trip, chances are you didn’t have the time or space to pack your gear. Fortunately, you can rent a bike in practically any destination across the country, from Santa Monica to Boston. The beautiful Boston Habor[/caption] Before the weather cools and the boats stop running for the winter in cities like Boston and Chicago, take the opportunity to enjoy the late summer ocean breezes and smell the salt in the air. Many of these cruises are also great introductions to the city, so if you’re visiting a place you’ve never been before they can be quite enlightening. The popular Skyline Lake Tour in Chicago provides a unique perspective on the Windy City, and the USS Constitution Cruise is fun AND historical.
Visit a theme park
Rides, slides, and unhealthy snacks – kids love the wild experiences of a theme park. Many waterparks close gradually throughout the fall, especially in less temperate climes. And while some are open year-round, they’re often not as fun in cold weather. After all, who really wants to ride a roller coaster bundled up in a down coat and hat? So take advantage of this last summer weekend and visit the ever-popular LEGOLAND Florida and check out their exciting new “World of Chima” exhibit, or Universal Studios Hollywood for some classic entertainment.
