March Madness Things To Do on Vacation

Image of Basketball, Basketball (Ball), March Madness
We can all feel it in the air: spring is almost here! One of the best signs that spring is coming is March Madness, which gets everyone in the mood for the national basketball championships! The NCAA tournaments are a uniquely American tradition, sending millions of fans into a chaotic, adrenaline-infused frenzy. March Madness has even affected British Prime Minister David Cameron. What better way to welcome the prime minister than to take him to watch his first basketball game? President Obama took Cameron to watch the kickoff game of March Madness in Dayton, Ohio, and it was reported that the two politicians munched hot dogs while Obama gave Cameron some pointers. Perhaps no other city is quite as affected by March Madness as Los Angeles (at least as far as the west coast goes!) There are basketball fans almost everywhere you go in Los Angeles, and they are devoted! If you are in Los Angeles during the month of March, you are likely to witness crazed UCLA Bruins fans, as the team recently beat Washington State. It is almost as chaotic and infectious as when the Lakers are playing! If you are visiting Los Angeles, it is worth it to take a trip down to San Diego to see more of the California Coast. In San Diego, you may catch a little bit of San Diego State Aztecs fever. Some of the best sports bars in San Diego include Seau’s, Players Sports Bar, Shakespeare Pub & Grill, Bully’s East, McGregors Grill & Ale House, and Dave & Busters. When you are not watching the games, there are plenty of San Diego attractions to keep you occupied in this gorgeous coastal city! For those of you traveling to the Midwest during March Madness, settle in at some great old fashioned sports bars to watch University of Chicago in action. Some excellent venues include Frontier, Lottie's Pub, Benchmark, and the Anthem. Squeeze in a trip to the John Hancock Observatory while you're there! March Madness also infects Boston, a city known for loving its sports. Whether or not you are into basketball, it is fun to watch witness the city celebrating its sports teams. Sit in a classic sports bar and enjoy drinks and appetizers while watching the game. There are some great sports bars in the area, such as McFaddens on State Street, or The Greatest Bar, near to TD Bank North Garden. If you are going to be in New York City during March Madness, it is helpful to know that the Department of Transportation is bringing back its "Safe Rides Home" program, which will offer thousands of debit cards and single-ride MetroCards. These can be used for public transit rides and even taxi rides after the games. This is helpful for anyone who celebrated a little too much at Madison Square Garden!
