Where’s Hot in September?

Looking for that perfect early fall vacation destination? We’ve put together a quick rundown of where’s hot in September for your ideal getaway. Enjoy the high temps in these places where the summer’s still going strong, with plenty of outdoor things to do and attractions to enjoy. So don’t toss that sunscreen just yet – you’ll need it in these great September vacation spots. Our favorite hot destinations in September include...

  • Miami
  • Dubai
  • Las Vegas
  • Cancun
  • San Diego

1. Miami

Miami is, without question, one of our favorite places to vacation in September. The weather is still great for beach-goers, but the summer crowds will have largely departed, leaving Miami ripe for your explorations. Go on an Art Deco walking tour to see what all the fuss is about, or take a hop-on hop-off bus tour – with air-conditioning – to explore the city in style. Miami Beach also offers the delightfully kitschy Duck Tours as a way to simultaneously explore the city and cool off. If you’ve got your heart set on enjoying the tropical waters of South Florida, try a leisurely cruise aboard the Island Queen. Soak up the sun and gawk at all the mansions of Millionaire’s Row and the sweeping vistas of Biscayne Bay. Average High Temperature: 85 F / 29 C

2. Dubai

Ok, so when we said where’s hot in September, in this case, we really meant hot. Dubai, in fact, is too hot during this time of year to spend any time outside – many attractions will cease their operations during this time of the year – so you’ll want to cool off Dubai-style. Enjoy the world’s largest indoor ski resort and hang out with some gentoo penguins. Bonus: you’re already inside the Mall of the Emirates so you can get your shop on after you tire of the slopes. For those of you traveling with kids or anyone with a strong sense of adventure, IMG Worlds of Adventure is a must-do. Another indoor option, this expansive theme park is organized into five exciting “Adventure Zones,” each with a unique theme: think rides and attractions inspired by Cartoon Network and MARVEL, among others. Average High Temperature: 102 F / 39 C

3. Las Vegas

Las Vegas frankly isn’t far behind Dubai when it comes to scorching temps, but (stop me if you’ve heard this before) it’s a dry heat. Seriously, though, it makes a difference. You can stay out of the sun during the day and enjoy pleasantly cooler weather in the evening. The Grand Canyon is on many bucket lists, and September is a good time to visit. You’ll benefit from the fact that most kids are back in school, so you can enjoy thinner crowds and therefore better photo ops. Take a full-day tour of the Grand Canyon to make the most of your trip. For your other days, spend some time exploring the city – gaming, scoping out museums, and/or embarking on tours. Then, after a full day, you’ll want to take in a show. Las Vegas is famous for its spectacular theatre scene, and with iconic options like Cirque de Soleil, the Blue Man Group, and V Theatre, there’s no shortage of world-class performances to choose from. Average High Temperature: 96 F / 35 C

4. Cancun

Cancun is a tropical paradise just made for September vacations. The exuberant heat of the summer is still around and practically endless adventures await. Swim with the dolphins at Isla Mujeres, trek out into the jungle at Xcaret Park, or go on an eco-tour of the local cenotes. In addition to these high-flying excursions, you can also enjoy a variety of exhilarating watersports, from parasailing to catamaran cruises and beyond. Various snorkeling options abound, too, including an evening snorkel that features bioluminescent flora and fauna. Should you end up feeling like you want to get in a little culture alongside the outdoorsy events, check out the Frida Kahlo Museum or a tour of the Mayan pyramids at Chichén Itzá. Average High Temperature: 90 F / 32 C

5. San Diego

Looking for something more temperate in September? Sunny San Diego is reliably in the high seventies Fahrenheit (or mid-twenties Celsius) and is an ideal late summer/early fall destination. You won’t be wading through summer tourists and there’s still plenty to enjoy. For those first-time visitors to San Diego, you’ll want to explore the city with a little guidance. Opt for the charming hop-on hop-off trolley tour and gain the flexibility to pick and choose what you want to see as you go along. Fans of art, history, technology, and science always flock to Balboa Park, the nation’s most diverse and expansive cultural park. There, you can meet new animals at the San Diego Zoo, be inspired by the history of mankind at the San Diego Museum of Man, and marvel at the science behind space flight at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Average High Temperature: 77 F / 25 C
