One day in Dubai: your see-it-all stopover itinerary

Hi the ground running with our whistle-stop tour of Dubai's greatest hits.

Published: July 18, 2024
Dubai

Dubai's airport is one of the busiest in the world, providing a gateway in and out of the Middle East for incurable international globetrotters. Whether you're traveling from Europe, Asia or the Americas, a Dubai layover opens up a fantastic opportunity to experience the Desert City in all its skyscraping, sun-drenched glory.

As anyone who has ever experienced a 24-hour stopover will attest, it can be tricky to orientate yourself rapidly enough to make the best of your time in the destination. Which is where we come in. Our ultimate guide to spending one day in Dubai ticks off many of the must-sees and definitely-dos, including...

  • The Big Bus sightseeing tour
  • At The Top – Burj Khalifa
  • Dubai Mall
  • Dubai Fountain
  • Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis The Palm
  • A Dubai Creek cruise
  • ...and more!

Stop#1: Hop-on hop-off Big Bus sightseeing tour

Dubai tourist photographing Burj Khalifa

Start your day early and immerse yourself in the best of downtown Dubai from a classic open-top Big Bus Dubai tour. Cruise along Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main highway, and into Deira, the oldest part of the city, home of the iconic gold, spice and perfume souks. An onboard guide provides lively and entertaining commentary, adding context and history (and the occasional fun anecdote) at each stop along the route.

With buses passing through every 30-40 minutes, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to hop off at your chosen landmarks, snap a few pictures and hop back on board to continue on your way? Choose your own adventure: popular highlights along the red route include the mighty Burj Khalifa, the Palm Jumeirah, Ain Dubai, Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai Creek and more.

Stop#2: the Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah

No Dubai stopover would be complete without even a quick look at the eye-popping artificial archipelago that is the palm-tree-shaped Palm Jumeirah. For the best views of its fronds and islands, ascend the Palm Tower to The View at The Palm observation deck.

Alternatively, make like a fish and head for the Lost Chambers Aquarium, part of the luxury Atlantis The Palm complex. You know: the one with the palatial pink facade and absolutely enormous Arabian archway. Inside, you'll find an aquarium themed around the lost city of Atlantis, with 10 zones to explore, each allowing you to get up close to thousands of marine critters. Sharks, stingrays, tropical fish, giant arapaima, piranhas: if you can think of it, it's probably here. Keep eyes peeled out for scuba-diving staff, who regularly enter the tanks for animal checks and feeding sessions. It's also worth joining the regular Myth of Atlantis tours to discover the secrets of the legendary city, and learn more about its current fishy residents.

Stop#3: Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain

Dubai Fountain

Once you've completed your grand tour of the Palm, cruise back down SZR to the Downtown Dubai area for a stop at Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain. Equivalent in size to 50 soccer fields, Dubai Mall is the daddy of all shopping experiences. There's somewhere in the region of 1,000 places to splash the cash here and well over 100 more if you're ready for a bite to eat which – unless you grabbed a snack at the Palm – you certainly will be. Just don't spend all day squabbling about where to have lunch – remember you're on the clock here!

That said, there are plenty of other ways you could kill time here if you choose to do so. Another aquarium? Sure, why not. Quick skate on the ice rink? Break a leg! Catch a movie or six at the cinema megaplex? Show me the popcorn! Say hello to the resident (real) diplodocus skeleton? Um, yeah, go on then.

But, in fact, one of the mall’s most interesting features can be found outside of it. We're talking about the famous dancing Dubai Fountain. Move over Bellagio Las Vegas: with 6,600 lights and 25 color projectors this is the world’s biggest choreographed fountain system. It springs to life every evening with epic half-hourly music and light performances set to Arabic and international hits. Pro-tip nab a  spot near the Souk Al Bahar Bridge for prime viewing rights.

Stop#4: At The Top at the Burj Khalifa

Burj_Khalifa_Observation_Deck

Next up, it's the ultimate Dubai tourist attraction: the Burj Khalifa. Got a head for heights? Good, you're going to need it. The elevator speeds you up to a dizzying 1,483 feet, way up on the 124th and 125th floors of the planet's tallest building. From here, you’ll enjoy a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Dubai, a fine vantage point for appreciating the vivid and daring architecture of this desert oasis city. Gaze out across the gulf and into the desert and – hey – isn't that the Dubai DFountain down there, too? Why yes, yes it is. Be sure to nab that souvenir selfie before heading back down to terra firma.

Stop#5: Dhow dinner cruise or desert safari

Dune bashing in Dubai

If you still have time before the next leg of your journey, there's no better way to wrap up your Dubai day than with one of these wonderful traditional experiences. First up: a dhow dinner cruise on Dubai Creek. Enjoy a red-carpet welcome complete with drinks and dates as you board one of these traditional Arabian wooden sailboats and set off on a gentle twilight meander along the Creek, with illuminated glass-and-steel skyscrapers towering overhead. And, if you can wrench your attention away from the city sights, there's also a 5-star all-inclusive dinner buffet to attend to.

Alternatively, go all in on a desert safari, which comes complete with – deep breath – 4x4 dune-bashing, belly dancers, traditional music, henna painting, camel riding, sandboarding, shisha and, of course, a delicous BBQ dinner.

Alternative itineraries for Dubai stopovers

Ok, we get it: you have no interest whatsoever in looking at animals in an aquarium or – heaven forbid – going up to the 125th floor of some supertall skyscraper. Good news: our suggested itinerary is just that, and you can choose to follow it, or not. The thing about Dubai is that there is truly so much you could do here that it would be easy to knock up several dozen different itineraries based on the specific interests of whoever's in your crew. Here are a few more, just in case the above plan doesn't fit your particular bill...

Example one-day Dubai itinerary #2:

Dubai at sunset
  • You've got to visit At The Top at Burj Khalifa.
  • Cool off at Ski Dubai – complete with snowy slopes and actual penguins – at the Mall of the Emirates.
  • Add a little lunch and retail therapy while you're already at the mall.
  • Use the hop-on hop-off Big Bus Dubai to see a bit more of Downtown.
  • Another mall? Go on then. Head over to Dubai Mall for dinner at the Al Hallab Restaurant, where you'll enjoy an Arabian culinary experience on the outdoor terrace with views of the Dubai Fountain show.

Example one-day Dubai itinerary #3:

  • Enjoy a family day at Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis The Palm on the Palm Jumeirah.
  • Visit the Lost Chambers Aquarium and have lunch at one of the many outlets at Atlantis.
  • If you have some time, head to Ski Dubai for some afternoon fun or head to The Beach (JBR) for a spot of afternoon sea-swimming.
  • Enjoy a regal dhow dinner cruise at Dubai Marina with stunning views of the Marina Waterfront.

Example one-day Dubai itinerary #4:

Dubai transport
  • Take a speedboat sightseeing tour from Dubai Marina.
  • Swim at The Beach (JBR) and grab lunch at many of the restaurants and shopping outlets there.
  • Head to Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates for some afternoon snow and shopping.
  • Head to At The Top – Burj Khalifa.
  • Choose between Al Hallab Restaurant on the Dubai Mall terrace, a desert safari or a dhow dinner cruise.

Best Day Trips From Dubai

Dubai is all well and good. After all, you did decide to vacation there, and you are, of course, infallible. But what lies beyond Dubai's bright and brilliant walls? Well, explore the lands beyond on one of the best day trips from Dubai! Read on, and discover our top picks. Including: Abu Dhabi Qasr Al Watan Desert BBQ experience Quad Bike rides Camel-top travels and more! Best Day Trips from Dubai - Abu Dhabi One of the best day trips from Dubai is easily a tour of Abu Dhabi. The UAE's capital city, it's one of the most historic cities in the entire region. Compared to the modern decadence of Dubai, it's certainly a city with less of a focus on experiences. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth experiencing, if you catch our drift. Kicking off on the coast, you'll pass by famous spots such as the vast Jebel Ali Port, the National Exhibition Centre, Etihad Towers, the Louvre Museum, and Emirates Palace. Snap-worthy landmarks, if ever we saw some! With the perfect mix of culture, history, and modernity, it's the perfect place to hop out and explore. So, take this day trip from Dubai and see all of Abu Dhabi's best bits! Best Day Trips from Dubai - Visit Qasr Al Watan One of the biggest draws of taking a vacation abroad is exploring new cultures and learning about their customs. You might not get much of that in Dubai, as it's a city built for industry and tourism. So, if you want to explore Arabic culture, as well as the region's historical significance, with a trip to Qasr Al Watan? On the outside, you'll be treated to a magnificent white palace housed in the Presidential Palace compound. On the inside, you'll learn all about Arab heritage and culture and how it evolved over millennia. For centuries, the region was at the forefront of science and medicine, all while the rest of Europe was deep in the Dark Ages. Then, explore the Qasr Al Watan Library, which culture vultures will love to dive into. All in all, Qasr Al Watan makes for one of the most fascinating day trips from Dubai. Best Day Trips from Dubai - Desert Safari and BBQ Dinner You don't even need to venture too far from Dubai's city limits to experience one of the city's best day trips. Thanks to this delightful desert tour of the dunes, you can get a beautiful barbeque at your backdoor. Well, not literally. From the very start, you'll be treated like a VIP. Festivities begin as soon as you leave your hotel, when a deluxe 4x4 will pick you up. You'll travel in style and comfort into the desert surrounding Dubai, where you can take photos and admire the beauty of the setting sun. Then, you'll reach your basecamp, where you'll find the grill piping hot. Then, indulge in a whole host of BBQ treats, from grilled meats and veg to other local delights. When you've eaten your fill, prepare for an evening of entertainment! With belly dancing, a traditional Egyptian dance show, some smoky shisha, sandboarding, camel riding, henna painting, and more on offer, you're in for a great night! Then, when the festivities wind down, you'll hop back in the 4x4 and get a lift back to your hotel. The perfectly pampered end to a perfectly pampered evening! Best Day Trips from Dubai - Bug out in Dubai's desert! Switching gears now to something a bit more adrenaline-pumping. If you've never ridden over the dunes outside Dubai in a dune buggy, you've never truly lived. Change all that, and get behind the wheel on this amazing day trip out of Dubai. Like the BBQ evening, you'll get a ride in a 4x4 from your hotel to basecamp. Then, you'll board your metal hog and take the beast for a spin. For 30 glorious minutes, you'll do donuts, skids, and other buggy-related moves. And your guide will be on hand to ensure you don't blow up - or anything less explosive. If you've never boarded a dune buggy and, let's face it, you probably haven't, then give it a go on one of the best day trips from Dubai! Best Day Trips from Dubai - burn rubber atop a Quad Bike! If dune buggies don't quite do it for you, why not try a quad bike instead? These four-wheeled wonders can make quick work of Dubai's dunes, so consider hopping aboard and tearing up the desert like nobody's business. After your ride drops you at camp, you'll kick off your desert escapades by boarding a four-legged camel to take a more methodical tour of the surroundings. After your camel is sick of the sight of you, you'll reach a specially designed track nestled deep in the beautiful dunes. And then, well, it's time to ride, baby. You'll have plenty of time to ride around, squealing with glee. No one can hear your squealing out here, so let it all out. Then, when you've ridden your wheels down to the bone, hop back in your 4x4 and head right back to your hotel room. Excellent. Best Day Trips from Dubai - camel action! And finally, if the thought of riding a camel seems a lot more exotic than anything with an engine, don your best headwrap and live out your Laurence of Arabia dreams on this fauna tour of the dunes. Like the above, you'll be escorted in comfort - and air conditioning - to a camp deep in the dunes. From there, you'll saddle up and ride your two-humped friend for 30 gloriously bizarre minutes. Try and take some pics aboard a camel that cares not for your social media following. Good luck with that. Then, when you're done, you'll be taken back to camp, where you can refuel, relax, and enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, dates, and more before heading back to the city. Very nice. And those were our picks for the best day trips from Dubai! If you're looking for more fun within the city, check out Go City. With our All-Inclusive Pass or Explorer Pass, you can see all of Dubai's best bits when and how you want.

Dubai in October

Dubai is pretty warm all year round, but you may be surprised just how warm it can be during months you usually find colder. Take October, for example. Heading there then can feel like a summer holiday all on its own, so check out our guide to Dubai in October and see if it's the month for you! Including: Dubai weather in October Cool off at Dubai's water parks Dubai's brilliant beaches Relax at Dubai's beach clubs and more! Dubai in October: What to Expect While for many of us, October is the final nail in the summer coffin as we prep for the cold and wet of the coming winter, that's not the case in Dubai. You can expect highs of around 97°F and lows of around 75°F. That's...peak summer weather in many parts of the world. As such, dress and prep for a summer holiday! Light clothes, giant hats, and liters of sunscreen should do the trick. Dubai in October: What to Do Water parks With temperatures that high, you'll want to make the most of the sun while staying as cool as possible. And what's the best way to do all that? Well, at a water park, of course! Lather up with your factor 1000, put on your best beachwear, and get sliding. Unsurprisingly, Dubai has some great water parks, such as Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis The Palm. There, you'll find plenty of rides that cater to both the young and old. Aquaconda - nice wordplay - throws you down a head-spinning snake of a ride, with twists and turns around every scaly corner. There's Poisiden's Revenge, which drops you down at 60mph into a massive pool. And to cool off, they even have their own beach where you can relax or hop in a kayak! For little ones, there's LEGOLAND® Water Park, where the wonderful world of colorful building blocks comes to life. With 20 LEGO®-themed rides featuring some recognizable faces, your kids will love it. The Joker Soaker pits you against Batman's worst enemy as you splash around his playground. And at LEGO® Slide Racers, you'll board your mat and bomb your way down this white knuckle ride. Thrills, chills, and hopefully, no spills await you. Perfect for kids and big kids alike. Beaches The brave among you may wish to forgo the pleasures of the splash and instead embrace the heat in all its glory. Well, where better to do that than at the beach? With enough sun, sand, and sea to make your head spin, just be sure to pack the aforementioned sunscreen and hat! Jumeirah Beach Residence - or JBR, is one of the city's biggest and best beaches, if relaxation is your aim. This massive beach has everything you could ever want - clean white sand, warm blue water, and enough space to stretch out and make the most of it. You can't swim after sundown due to the lack of light in the water, but you can certainly pitch your tent on its shores all night long. Or, if you want to make a day of it, check out La Mer. There, you'll find stunning seaside views, watersports, shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities you won't find anywhere else. There's a cinema on-site, if you like the talkies, and you can even rent your own private beach house for the day. Nice. Beach clubs If you're looking for beach vibes but need a little shade on a warm October day, then hit up a beach club instead. Part beach, part pool club, part restaurant, they pack a relaxing punch you won't find anywhere else in Dubai. For ultimate relaxation, hit up the Mediterranean stylings at Twiggy by La Cantine. Named after the famous model that embodied the spirit of the swinging sixties, you'll find this beach club laden with white silk, white lounge chairs, and white, well, everything else. Alongside the massive infinity pool, you'll enjoy a welcoming menu of European bites. Alternatively, a livelier option is Surf Club, which features resident DJs, dancing through the day, and a stacked bar. A cool night's travel Fancy seeing all of Dubai's sights, sounds, and highlights in one chilled night? Then you'll fancy the hell out of a Dubai Magical Night Tour. Joined by a knowledgeable yet humorous guide, you'll be transported around the city, see the most recognizable Dubai landmarks, and do it all under the comforting coolness of Dubai's October night sky. You'll cruise by the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Burj Al Arab, Dubai Harbor and more. Make sure you have space on your phone camera to capture the stunning sights of the city's night lights. An evening stroll in the desert If you're less about sightseeing and more about sight visiting, then how does a desert safari that culminates in a relaxing BBQ dinner sound? Pretty great, right? From your hotel, a 4x4 will whisk you away to the amazing dunes in Dubai's surrounding desert. And yes, you'll still have plenty of time to snap pics of the mesmerizing scenery before you reach the desert camp. Then, you'll be treated to a traditional BBQ meal of grilled meats, veg, and other delights. But that's not all; there are also activities and entertainment for you to enjoy long into the night. Watch a belly dancing show, smoke some authentic shisha, ride a camel, and even get some henna painted on you! Then, when the night is over, you'll be taken right back to your hotel. Night boat And finally, we'll end our guide to Dubai in October with another cool night activity. Take to the waters around Dubai Marina and tour the shoreline, the highlight being the towering Ain Dubai. Your one-hour tour will take you past Jumeriah Beach and Bluewaters Island, before you set eyes on Ain Dubai- the tallest observation wheel on the planet! You can set off at 6:30PM to see the sunset, or at 9PM to see Dubai's lights shimmering off the water. Either is beautiful, so choose whichever suits you and get sailing! And that's our guide to Dubai in October! Looking for other suggestions? Why not check out Go City? With our All-Inclusive Pass or Explorer Pass, you can see all of Dubai's best bits when and how you want. There's so much to do, see, and experience that no matter what you decide to do, you'll love your time in the city!

Things to do in Dubai in Summer

Summer is most people's favorite time of year. The sun is out, the sky's no longer grey, and it's the time of year when vacations often turn from dreams into reality. So, where do you choose to go on your summer vacation? Dubai - one of the hottest cities on the planet. Fair play, we respect the commitment to summertime. So, you'll be wanting to know about the best things to do in Dubai in summer, won't you? Right this way, please. The doctor is ready to see you. Dr. ...Fun. Dr. Summer Fun, MD. Including: Cool off at Dubai's excellent waterparks Check out the relaxing beach club scene Chill out on the slopes Kick back on the beach Take to the seas and tour the sunny surroundings Make a splash When it comes to summertime, water is a human's best friend. We drink it to hydrate us, we spray it on our faces to cool down, and we like to submerge ourselves in it when the temperature rises. But why settle for swimming when you can cannon down a water slide and make a real splash? Dubai waterpark scene is popping off, with a number of the wonders dotted about the city. Arguably the best is Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis The Palm. You'll find a good mix of kid-friendly entertainment and stuff for the grown-ups and opportunities to relax between the action. Make sure you check out the Leap of Faith, which drops you nine stories into a transparent tube surrounded by deadly sharks; Aquaconda, which is a snakey slide that will leave your head spinning; and Aquaventure Beach, which lets you relax and dry off after a hectic splash. If you're willing to travel, take a boat over to the beautiful Yas Island and check out Yas Waterworld. Featuring over 40 unique rides and appealing to all ages, it's the perfect remedy to the summer heat. Our recommendations are Bandit Bomber, a suspended rollercoaster that cannons around the track and splashes you with water; Liwa Loop, another plummeting ride that drops you into winding tubes; and Cinesplash, a thrilling 5D cinema experience that will leave you mouth agape and your legs thoroughly soaked! If you've got the little ones with you, why not treat them to a waterpark built just for them? That would be LEGOLAND® Water Park, where the wonderful world of colorful building blocks comes to life. With 20 LEGO®-themed rides featuring some recognizable faces, your kids will love it. The Joker Soaker will pit you against LEGO® Batman's arch nemesis, as you splash around his playground. At LEGO® Slide Racers, you'll board your mat and bomb your way down this white knuckle ride. Thrills, chills, and hopefully, no spills await you. And, at Splash Out, you'll plummet down into the water in a kid-friendly way this time. Go clubbing, Dubai style We're not talking about busting some moves at the discotheque here; we're talking about beach clubs. These hubs of rest and relaxation can be the perfect answer to a long, hot day in Dubai. So it's no wonder that you'll find plenty of them lining the coast. Providing great views, great food, and good vibes, they're one of the best things to do in Dubai in summer. We recommend Twiggy by La Cantine. Its Central European splendor is exemplified by its all-white decor. Think white loungers draped in white sheets, and you're halfway there. But alongside the ambiance and a delightful menu of Mediterranean bites, its biggest selling point is unarguably the near-330ft infinity pool. Or, if the discotheque sounded like music to your ears, then you'll have your head turned by Surf Club. There, you can join the dancing masses on the dancefloor while DJs spin bouncy cuts, or simply sit back, admire the atmosphere, and feast on some delicious seafood. Whichever way you like your beach clubs, Surf Club's got you covered. Ski for your life When things get too hot outside, it could leave you wishing you'd gone somewhere cold instead. Rather than hiding inside, you could be hitting the slopes. Well, turn that frown upside down, you warm devil, because Ski Dubai is here to bring the chills and thrills where you'd least suspect them. How can snowy hills exist in Dubai, which is categorically hotter than the sun? Well, thanks to the largest indoor ski center on planet Earth, that's how! With plenty of slopes to conquer, lifts to scale, and even adorable penguins to see, it's about as close as you can get to an authentic mountaintop experience in the middle of the desert. Oh, and they provide you with all the equipment and teach newbies too, if you need the guidance. Easily one of the best things to do in Dubai on a hot summer day. Son of a beach, I'm in And finally, after all our recommendations for avoiding the heat, let's end with one that embraces the furnace. After all, it may have been the white dunes and pristine beaches that brought you here in the first place. So buckle up because it's beach time, baby. Let's talk about some of Dubai's finest sand factories. One of the biggest and arguably best beaches in Dubai, and well worth adding to your travel itinerary, is the Jumeirah Beach Residence - or JBR. This massive beach has everything you could ever want - clean white sand, warm blue water, and enough space to stretch out and make the most of it. It's also open 24 hours, though swimming is not permitted after the sun goes down due to the risks involved. Our other recommendation goes to Umm Suqeim Beach, which has a bigger focus on water sports and activities. You'll find more than a few surfers riding the waves here, and while they're hardly magnificent, they're about as good as you'll get in the Persian Gulf. It's a 24-hour beach too, but this time you can swim until midnight thanks to Smart Power lights that flood the beach. And that's our list of the best things to do in Dubai in summer! If you're in the market for some more unforgettable activities, look no further than Go City. With our All-Inclusive Pass or Explorer Pass, you can see all of Dubai's best bits when and how you want.
