New York City buzzes with possibilities, every corner offering families a new way to create shared memories. Whether you’re planning your first trip with toddlers or searching for options that’ll impress moody teenagers, this city rolls out the red carpet for kids and parents alike. We’re sharing our favorite family-friendly attractions, from hands-on museums and wildlife encounters to sky-high adventures and urban playgrounds. Ready to plan the best-ever family trip? Here are the experiences that should be at the top of your NYC checklist.

Central Park Zoo

Sea lions at Central Park Zoo

All kids love animals, and Central Park Zoo brings wildlife right into the heart of Manhattan. Stroll through beautifully designed habitats featuring snow leopards, playful sea lions and mischievous monkeys. If your children like hands-on learning, the zoo’s treetop canopy walk and interactive children’s zoo let them feel just like city explorers. This spot feels like a green oasis surrounded by tall city buildings. And, with fun feeding times and lively performances, there’s always something going on.

American Museum of Natural History

Giant dinosaur skeletons? Meteorites you can touch? Halls filled with dazzling gems? The American Museum of Natural History has curious minds covered. Every floor tells a new story: ogle the iconic blue whale, check out the interactive science center, or head to the planetarium for a journey through space. With rotating exhibits, there’s always something fresh to discover. Young visitors love scavenger hunts around the museum’s vast halls, while grownups will appreciate the in-depth displays. It’s one of those rare places that makes both kids and adults feel wide-eyed again.

Empire State Building

There's something thrilling about seeing New York stretch out for miles beneath your feet. The Empire State Building’s 86th-floor observation deck is windy, wonderful and absolutely unforgettable, especially for first-time visitors. Meanwhile inside, the art deco lobby feels retro and glamorous and high-tech exhibits tell the skyscraper’s origin story. Friendly staff share fun facts that really make the experience photo ops abound, and late visits mean dazzling city lights. Our tip: keep your phone handy to capture those silent, gobsmacked moments when your kids get their first look out over the city.

New York Botanical Garden

Botanical gardens in New York

Located in the Bronx, the New York Botanical Garden is a wonderland of sprawling meadows, themed conservatories and playful family programming. Kids explore seasonal displays – think orchids, pumpkins and holiday trains – while parents relax among rare blooms. The Everett Children’s Adventure Garden offers nature-inspired art and science activities and features hands-on gardening spaces perfect for little green thumbs. The glasshouse’s rainforest and desert zones add an air of adventure, and picnic areas invite families to linger. The garden never feels rushed, so there’s every chance of the whole fam heading home a little more zen than they arrived.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan

For kids with a million questions (and just as much energy), the Children’s Museum of Manhattan is paradise. Five floors of colorful exhibits encourage learning through play: waterworks lets them build and splash, while the art lab inspires little hands to sculpt and draw. Storytelling corners, mini-theaters, and rotating special installations mean there’s always something new to try. The space feels safe and cheerful, with friendly staff who love explaining the science behind the fun. Toddlers and school-age children will find plenty to do, and parents can join in or relax while the little ones explore.

New York Transit Museum

Step into a vintage subway car and travel back through time to 1920s New York, all without leaving the borough of Brooklyn! The New York Transit Museum is set inside a genuine (decommissioned) station, so just walking in feels like a journey. Exhibits reveal how the city’s massive subway system was built, with hands-on activities loved by future engineers. You can even pose behind a working bus wheel or try your hand at operating a ticket machine. Train-mad kids could spend hours peeking into each carriage, while grownups enjoy the fascinating history and nostalgia of it all.

Broadway and Children’s Theater

New York Broadway

There’s nothing like the thrill of live theater, and New York’s family-friendly Broadway offerings always delight. Shows like ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Aladdin’ feature dazzling costumes, familiar songs, and colorful sets that keep both children and adults engaged from start to finish. Nearby children’s theaters, such as the New Victory Theater, focus exclusively on performances for young people, with playful productions and interactive sessions. The excitement in the lobby before curtain-up is part of the fun, and the whole experience is sure to become a highlight of your trip.

The RIDE

Turn sightseeing into a show on The RIDE. This mobile theatrical experience is a fun take on the traditional NYC bus tour that’s sure to have your whole crew giggling. Gaze out of floor-to-ceiling windows as the bus glides past landmarks, dancers, and street performers, while on-board entertainers keep the energy levels high with jokes, trivia and singalongs. Heck, even easily bored teens might enjoy the vibe. The route highlights classic spots including Times Square and the Chrysler Building, all through an actor’s lens. It's sightseeing made simple – and hilarious!

Intrepid Museum

Budding astronauts and future pilots won’t want to miss the Intrepid Museum, for further adventures on sea, in the air and in space. Climb aboard a real aircraft carrier moored on the Hudson, unleash your inner Maverick inside historic fighter jets, and peek inside the space shuttle pavilion. Engaging guides share personal stories that bring history alive, and interactive simulators let kids fly their own missions. Don’t miss the submarine, which features what might just be the narrowest hallway you’ve ever seen. It feels like you’re living out an action film, and the views of the river alone are worth the trip.

One World Observatory

The One World Observatory building

Take your family to the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at One World Observatory. The high-speed SkyPod elevators delight as they whisk you to the 102nd floor in under a minute, with digital windows showing the evolving NYC skyline as you rise. Floor-to-ceiling glass unveils sprawling city and river views, and interactive exhibits let kids pinpoint famous buildings far below. Head to the Sky Portal for the thrill of standing on glass and looking all the way down! With digital storytelling and plenty of space for kids to explore, it’s an unforgettable way to see New York from above.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

With its grand halls and galleries, and art from around the world, The Met is more than just an art museum; it’s a global adventure. Families can pick up special kid-friendly guides at the entrance and join engaging tours designed with kids in mind. Don’t miss the Egyptian temple and knights in shining armor. Lively weekend family activities and interactive stations keep everyone entertained. The seasonal rooftop garden is a relaxing space for city views and maybe even the odd family photo or two. There’s something for art-lovers and daydreamers alike, all inside a building that feels like its own adventure.

Chelsea Piers

A treasure trove of fun activities come rain or shine, the huge Chelsea Piers complex promises bowling, skating, golf simulators, rock climbing and more. There’s space for strollers, plenty of café choices for quick bites, and a cheerfully busy atmosphere that makes everyone feel at home. Whether your family is packed with budding athletes or just wants to burn off energy, you’ll leave Chelsea Piers with flushed cheeks and big smiles.

Coney Island and Luna Park

Rides at Coney Island

NYC’s seaside amusement oasis, Coney Island, offers a classic day out for families. Luna Park’s rides range from gentle kiddie coasters to the legendary Cyclone roller coaster for brave souls. Boardwalk fare means cotton candy, stuffed knishes, and the always-popular Nathan’s hot dogs. The atmosphere feels festive year-round, with street performers, live music, and weekly fireworks lighting up summer nights. Younger kids love Deno’s Wonder Wheel (try the gently swaying cars for a family-friendly spin), while the nearby New York Aquarium offers a hands-on touch tank and sea lion training sessions. Whether digging your toes into the sand or riding vintage carousels, Coney Island promises a full and laughter-filled escape from the city’s bustle.

Where To Stay in New York

Planning a trip to New York and not sure where to stay? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Whether you’re a first-timer looking to see the sites or wanting a more authentic NY experience, we've put together a list of our favorite places to stay in the area. Wherever you choose to stay, the Big Apple packs so many fun attractions and hidden gems within its boundaries that it's impossible to be bored there. With Go City, you can see more, for less. See the Sites If it’s your first visit to New York, there's no greater place to stay than Midtown Manhattan. Located right in the heart of the concrete jungle, this vibrant district is the best choice for soaking up the true atmosphere of the city. Attracting millions of visitors each year, the area remains the most popular tourist destination in the entire city – and with good reason! Stay here, and you’ll be just a stone's throw away from countless emblematic attractions, including the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more. There are also great restaurants, theaters, shopping opportunities and bars – basically, you name it, they have it! Staying here also means that you’ll have your pick of some of the most iconic hotels in the city. With the city’s big reputation and all of the excitement to match it, it’s only natural that you’d want to stay near the center of it all. Still, if Midtown isn’t quite your scene, we recommend staying on the Upper West Side. This area is a great middle-ground for first-time explorers because it has an abundance of interesting attractions but with less of a buzz. Here, you’ll find everything from fantastic museums and parks to great restaurants and markets. Undoubtedly picturesque and quintessentially New York, the Upper West Side has a certain beauty and elegance you won’t find elsewhere. Live Like a Local New York is a city of enchanting contrasts, with an animated spirit and countless great neighborhoods and districts to explore. Still, one of our top picks to stay in is Chelsea for its vibrant art scene and great nightlife hotspots. The area presents an interesting array of industrial landmarks, modern structures, and of course, galleries to boot. Stay here, and you’ll be very close to the Whitney and the Rubin, amongst countless others. Dense with creativity and humanity, Chelsea is the perfect area for any artsy types coming to visit the Big Apple. Though we might have been led to believe otherwise, New York isn’t just all about Manhattan! If you’re looking to stay further out from the city center, we recommend checking out hotels in Brooklyn. Standing out as one of the coolest boroughs in New York, the area has a more laid-back feel than Manhattan, but without giving up all of the fun and intrigue. As one of the city’s liveliest urban spaces, you’ll find everything from interesting museums and landmarks to great bars and restaurants all in one place. Stay in Brooklyn if you’re looking for something a little different from the usual New York experience. When looking at places to stay in New York, many forget about the surrounding boroughs. Well, not us! Just a short ride away from Manhattan, Queens is one of our favorite destinations for its great attractions and diversity in culture. Other than that, the best things to do in the area run the gamut; from visiting historic landmarks and art museums to trying out some of the best cuisines in the city, you’ll find many reasons to love this unique spot. Those looking to soak up the urban atmosphere without feeling overwhelmed will undoubtedly enjoy Queens. Try Something New If you’re looking to live like the locals, look no further! Most certainly one of our favorite areas of the city, the West Village is known as the birthplace of 1960's counterculture and the gay liberation movement. Today, the area is flanked with federal-style townhouses, trendy restaurants and artsy boutiques, making it one of the most picturesque areas in New York to stay in. In addition, the neighborhood is well-recognized for its historic bars, theaters, and comedy clubs. Whilst this area appeals more to a younger crowd, there are no rules here! Aside from being super famous, New York has a little something for everybody – interesting history, alluring shopping destinations, great dining, and a whole heap more! Known for being the birthplace of punk, the East Village is good for those who want to experience the grittier side of city living. For creative types and dreamers, the area presents no shortage of galleries, hip restaurants and vintage stores to be discovered. Come nightfall, you’ll be right in the center of all of the fun, with an abundance of old school bars and music venues to choose from! Painfully cool and forever exciting, the area is perfect for anybody who’s looking to see a different side of the city. Another great place to stay in New York is SoHo. Lively and rich in culture, this area is kind of like the East Village’s grown-up older brother. With its elegant cast-iron structures, trendy cafes, and cobblestone streets, this neighborhood is truly the stuff movies are made of. At night, this place comes alive with high-end restaurants, bars and wineries to be enjoyed. For art lovers and anybody with a passion for fashion, Soho would be the perfect option. New York presents so many great places to stay in, each with their own unique sights, sounds, tastes and history. The city has a lot to offer, from trendy urban boroughs to High-end residential districts. Whether you’re an art lover, a shopaholic, or a foodie, you’re sure to find the perfect spot to suit your style and itinerary amongst the city’s wealth of options.
