St. George's Basilica – Prague Castle
Discover centuries of architectural splendor and religious significance in this must-see Prague destination.
What you'll do
Originating as the second church at Prague Castle, St. George's Basilica boasts a rich history that spans multiple periods of architectural evolution and cultural transformation. The present Romanesque appearance of the church is a testament to the resilience of its structure, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1142.
As you step through the doors of St. George's Basilica, you’ll be greeted by the timeless beauty of Romanesque architecture, with its sturdy columns and graceful arches. The addition of a chapel consecrated to St. Ludmila in the first half of the 13th century adds another layer of historical significance to the church, honoring one of Czechia's revered saints.
The Early Baroque period left its mark on St. George's Basilica, with the addition of a striking facade and the reconstruction of the entire convent. The culmination of this period of transformation is seen in the Baroque Chapel of St. John Nepomuk, added by the architect F.M. Kanka in the early 18th century. This magnificent chapel, adorned with intricate Baroque decorations and religious iconography, stands as a testament to the artistic and spiritual heritage of the church.
A visit to St. George's Basilica is not only an opportunity to admire its architectural grandeur but also a chance to connect with the spiritual and cultural traditions of Prague.
