Best Boat Tours in Seoul

Water. The life-giver. Since the dawn of human civilization, human settlements have always sprouted near sources of water. After all, we need to drink it to stay alive. The scientific community would even have you believe that we evolved from creatures that lived beneath the waves. Preposterous if you ask us. If we really came from the sea, where are our gills? Why is our skin not scaly? Either way, these days, we humans aren't so good at the whole "living in the sea" thing. Hence, boats.

And that's why you're here, isn't it? You're here because you want to sail Seoul's open oceans, discover its secrets, and perhaps glimpse your ancestors in the deep. Or maybe you're just looking for the best boat tours in the city? Either way, make the most of your vacation with these suggestions!

Han River

Much like the Thames in London, every boat tour in Seoul is going to take place on the Han River. Forming from the Yellow Sea as it flows through the border between North and South Korea, the Han River cuts right through the heart of Seoul, creating a less-dangerous north-south divide of its own. Though it is only the fourth longest river in the Korean Peninsula, it is arguably the most important.

What's so special about the Han River?

The Han River spans nearly 320 miles, but only around 200 miles of that are usable by boat. The rest form off into smaller streams that help keep the soil fertile around the river, so they're still useful.

But those 200 miles? They've been invaluable for Koreans for centuries. Since times long past, traders have used the Han River to transport goods from the Yellow Sea to communities throughout South Korea.

So, now you know all about the Han River and its relationship with Seoul, let's talk about the best boat tours you can take in the city! So put on your best sea captain's hat and make sure you take your travel sickness tablets!

Afternoon Han River Cruise

With so much of Korea's capital built around the Han River, it's hardly surprising that some of Seoul's most recognizable landmarks are within eyeshot of its waters. And what better way to see them all than on an afternoon cruise!

Would-be travelers will meet up at Yeouido Dock, where you'll board your vessel of choice. From there, you have two possible routes to take. The first is to the Seogang, and the second is by Dongjak Bridge. Whichever you decide to take, you'll catch a glimpse of the myriad landmarks that make up the Seoul skyline.

Make sure you have your camera ready so you can snap pics of the Seoul Tower, The Banpo Rainbow Bridge with its spectacular sunset fountain show, and the untamed nature of tiny Bamseom Island.

There's tons to see, plenty to snap, and if you're not sure what many of the landmarks are, you'll get live commentary from the captain, who knows everything about the surrounding area. Oh, and if you like seagulls, they'll often land on the hull to be fed. And yes, you can feed them. Just be sure to keep your supplies well hidden; the little monsters will take it all if they can!

Evening Han River Cruise

If you thought an afternoon river cruise was one of the best boat tours in Seoul, wait until you see it at night. When the sun goes down, the city is awash with neon lights, and those dazzling lights dance on the Han River in all directions.

The tour is exactly the same as the one described above, yet taking it at night is a whole new experience. If you have the time to take both, we'd recommend you do. And if you have to choose, your choice really depends on your preferred atmosphere. If you want to get a good view of the city, see the sights clearly, and learn about them, the afternoon tour will scratch that itch. However, if you want to see the city soaked in a futuristic neon glow, you've got to take the evening cruise.

It is truly a sight to behold, and nothing we say here will do it justice.

Nami Island Cruise

Nami Island may seem unassuming at first. After all, it's a small sliver of land found in the North Han River. But as you get closer, you'll start to notice something. At first, the tops of trees fill the space above the island like a verdant canopy. Next, a surprising absence of buildings or any obvious signs of modern society. Then, as you finally approach and the trees tower above you, you'll hear the sounds of wildlife. That's when it hits you; this is the perfect answer to Seoul's frantic hustle and bustle. This is paradise.

But don't take our word for it - hop on a boat, take a tour of the place, and discover why Nami Island is one of the best places in Seoul!

From the center of Seoul, you'll need to take a ferry that lasts a good one and a half hours; a tour in itself, if you will. So, make sure you dedicate a whole day, or at least most of one, to your trip.

When you land, you'll be free to roam the vast meadows, beautiful landscapes, and various restaurants, shops, and attractions that call Nami Island home.

Food-wise, Sonata Cafe's rustic cabin offers delicious sweet fried pancakes you can eat straight out of a cup, meaning you can keep refueled while you explore. Or, for a more meaty feast, check out Nammoon Korean and Seomhyaggi for filling plates of all the finest Korean cuisine you desire.

While Nami Island's main draw is its lush green spaces, trails, and woodland, the activity-minded are also served thanks to a mini tourist train, a zip wire, and opportunities to swim, roller skate, and participate in water sports.

But really, make the most of Nami Island by just exploring its beautiful landscape. You won't regret it.
