With a fleet of astoundingly ornate carriages, paintings, and tapestries, and lustrous gowns on display, the Imperial Carriage Museum offers up a sneak peek at the goings-on of the royal elite.

Walk in the footsteps of Austria’s most renowned rulers as you explore the extraordinary carriages, from golden baroque designs – as much a work of art as a means of transport – to 19th-century hunting carriages and ground-breaking automobiles.

For those more intrigued by personal historical tales, you can also snake around the museum on the ‘Sisi trail’: married at 16, the reluctant empress Elizabeth (nicknamed ‘Sisi’) struggled to fit in at court, and this particular route around the building shines a light on her many woes. A Bavarian far from home, with an overbearing mother-in-law to boot, she found solace in poetry, study, and ultimately, international travel, before being tragically assassinated in 1889 by an Italian anarchist. Get to know her story, marked with a level of grief that seems quite incongruous with these sumptuous surroundings.
