The museum is housed in the grand Saint-Germain-en-Laye – a former royal residence since the 12th century. After falling into disrepair, the structure was restored by Napoleon III during the Second Empire. Passionate about archeology, the emperor created the Museum of Celtic and Gallo-Roman Antiquities here.

The Paleolithic period – the longest in prehistory – saw the advent of stone tools, weapons made of bone, domestication of fire and the first burials.
