Paris' 18th-century Pantheon is the final resting place of some of the most famous and illustrious French intellectuals. Within this imposing neoclassical building, you'll find the tombs of internationally famous intellectuals, including Voltaire and Victor Hugo. The Pantheon was originally destined to be a religious building. When King Louis XV recovered from an illness in 1744 he vowed that he would rebuild the ruined church of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris’s Latin quarter. However, after the revolution, the new government ordered that the Pantheon not be used for religious purposes but as a mausoleum for the greatest French intellectuals.
