Marvel at the ornate architecture, see the sumptuous furnishings, and learn about this fascinating building and its former occupants.
Located in Honolulu's capitol district, this regal structure and National Historic Landmark was home to the Hawaiian Kingdom's two final monarchs, King Kalakaua, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani. Wander around the main rooms and halls, including the Grand Hall, the Throne Room, the State Dining Room, and the King and Queen’s private suites. You'll also see the Blue Room, which was used for small receptions, and displays a portrait of King Louis Philipe given to the Hawaiian palace as a gift from the French government. Iolani Palace also houses a collection of furniture made by famous Boston furniture maker A.H. Davenport. Once you’ve explored the interiors, you can head to the palace grounds and see the ornate royal tomb and the Coronation Pavilion. This attraction is not to be missed for history fans.
What You Can Expect to See at the Iolani Palace
The Grand Hall
The Grand Hall is the first room you’ll see when you enter the Palace. It features a beautiful koa wood staircase and portraits of the reigning monarchs of Hawaii.
The Throne Room
The Throne Room is where King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani held formal audiences and diplomatic receptions. It features two thrones and a large portrait of Queen Victoria.
The State Dining Room
The State Dining Room is where the royal family entertained guests. It features a large koa wood table and a collection of silverware and china.
The Blue Room
The Blue Room is where the royal family held informal gatherings. It features a portrait of King Louis Philipe given to the Hawaiian palace as a gift from the French government.
The King and Queen’s Private Suites
The King and Queen’s Private Suites are where the royal family lived. They feature a collection of personal items and furniture.
The Palace Grounds
The Palace Grounds feature the ornate royal tomb and the Coronation Pavilion.
Facts
King Kalakaua was the first monarch to circumnavigate the globe in 1881.
Iolani Palace was built to rival those in Europe and signal Hawaii's place as a modern sovereign state.
When it was built, the palace had the most up-to-date technology including indoor plumbing, incandescent lighting, and telephones.
Many of Iolani Palace's artifacts were lost or stolen during the overthrow of the government in 1893.
