    About this experience

Don’t be fooled by Casino Marino’s compact exterior; it’s just the first of many tricks this 18th-century pleasure house has up its sleeve. In fact, this Tardis-like building conceals a mind-boggling 16 rooms across three floors, including kitchens, servants’ rooms and a state bedroom.

Designed by William Chambers for James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont, in the mid-18th Century, Casino Marino is a gem of neo-classical architecture. There’s a chance to admire the building’s decorative stonework, soaring columns and stone lions before stepping into the entrance hall with its polished wooden floors, grand marble fireplace and imposing portrait of Caulfeild.

Each of the rooms around the house is decorated in a similarly elegant style. You’ll visit the State Bedroom with its Greek columns and gilded cornicing, the Blue Salon with its beautiful inlaid marquetry floor, and the Zodiac Room, which features astrological symbols around the base of its extraordinary domed ceiling.

The casino is set in beautiful grounds with a lake, which pass holders can explore at leisure before or after the tour.

    Casino Marino facts

    • The casino was designed for James Caulfeild by his friend, the Scottish architect William Chambers, and completed in 1775.
    • There are 16 rooms across Casino Marino’s three floors – pretty impressive given it measures just 50 square feet to its outer columns.
    • A tunnel once connected Casino Marino to its larger sibling Marino House, which was demolished in 1920.
    • Four of the building's columns are hollow to allow rainwater to drain from the roof, and the chimney pots are Roman funerary urns.
