What you'll do
The brave, the bold and the desperate: trace the journey of those forced to flee the famine.
The Jeanie Johnston tells the story of the thousands of Irish people who fled the famine and embarked on a treacherous voyage in the hope of a better life in North America. Step onboard this imposing tall ship and you will be transported back in time to get a sense of what their gruelling journey would have been like.
Migrants endured overcrowding, seasickness, disease, filth, starvation and storms, along with incredibly cramped quarters; about 250 passengers spent most of their time below deck, only emerging for half an hour of fresh air each day. Learn how the famine forced millions to flee the country, experience what life was like onboard and uncover fascinating personal passenger stories.
The tour takes approximately 50 minutes and is led by knowledgeable guides.
