What you'll do
The Borghese Gallery’s collection of world-class art began in the 17th century, when Cardinal Scipione Borghese — the nephew of Pope Paul V — confiscated a series of works in Cavalier d'Arpino's studio.
After sourcing 100 new pieces, including early work by Caravaggio, the Cardinal went to extraordinary lengths to procure art for this gallery. He organised the theft of Raphael’s “Deposition” from a convent in Perugia, which was lowered from the walls in the dead of night.
The Borghese Gallery houses a spectacular collection of works by artists including Bernini, Canova, and Titian. The collection features illustrious paintings, 16th and 17th-century sculptures, and endless antiques. Admire masterpieces such as “Sacred and Profane Love”, “Young Sick Bacchus”, and “Apollo and Daphne” - the latter displays metamorphosis mid-action.
Many sculptures are displayed in the spaces they were originally intended for. Accompanied by your app audio guide, you can wander the gallery in a way that lets you fully appreciate each masterpiece in context.
The Borghese Gallery is perfectly placed in the lush greenery of Villa Borghese Park, the third-largest park in the Eternal City.
