A visit to London isn't complete without heading to Buckingham Palace – and now you can enter this royal residence and enjoy its magnificent State Rooms!
Buckingham Palace serves as the official London residence of His Majesty The King and is one of the few remaining working royal palaces in the world today. Each summer, the Palace opens its doors to the public, allowing you to explore the State Rooms that hold ceremonial occasions and events attended by members of the Royal Family.
You'll see the Throne Room that has been the backdrop for the official portraits from the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen. Admire historic paintings and royal ciphers in the State Dining Room, used for official lunches, smaller banquets, and royal receptions. And step into the Green Drawing Room, named for the green and gold silk wall coverings, designed by architect John Nash for George IV and the setting of official occasions.
When you've had your fill of the majestic interiors, the Palace's Garden Café has a selection of tasty, light refreshments. Take in the grandeur of the regal setting before heading to the Garden Shop where you can treat yourself to a souvenir to commemorate your exciting day at Buckingham Palace!
Highlights
Throne Room
A dramatic setting by architect John Nash who was greatly influenced by his background in theatre set designs. Central to the room is the pair of throne chairs which are known as Chairs of Estate, which were made for the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1953.
The Ballroom
The largest of the State Rooms was completed in 1855, during the reign of Queen Victoria. It was originally known as the Ball and Concert Room.
Green Drawing Room
The Green Drawing Room takes its name from the distinctive green and gold silk wall coverings, first commissioned by Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV. At her request, the silk was woven in Ireland to provide employment in one of the country's poorest regions. Although the wall coverings have been replaced roughly every 30 years, their signature green colour has remained unchanged.
The Picture Gallery
Designed to showcase George IV’s magnificent paintings collection, the Gallery displays some of the greatest paintings in the Royal Collection. There are some 120 masterpieces on show!
The Grand Staircase
Full-length portraits of Queen Victoria's immediate family line the upper staircase, adding to its grand atmosphere. It's easy to imagine the dramatic entrances and royal arrivals that once took place here.
Palace Garden
The palace gardens are best known for hosting the Royal Garden Parties. Spanning 16 hectares, they feature a spectacular 150-metre herbaceous border, a rose garden, a summer house, the impressive Waterloo Vase and the palace's own tennis court.
