The Windmill in Skerries called the 'five sail' is a product of its times and is reflective of the popular tower mill style of the 18th and 19th centuries. Skerries’ Great Mill is a five sail mill and measures 49 feet high and is home to a wide range of machinery from sieves, shakers and blowers, as well as grinding stones and a sack-hoist.

The older of the two, this small windmill was built on the site of a prehistoric fort and is at the summit of Skerries town. Visitors can go inside and can witness the inner mechanics working as the sails power the grinding stones turning grains into flour.

It’ll open your eyes to the traditional industry of milling – and you can even try your hand it at, too! You’ll be taken right inside the heart of the mills and to the top of the 4 Sail Windmill and 5 Sail Windmills, and the tour will walk you over the crop field to take in breath-taking views over the coastline to top it all off.
