Gothenburg Museum of Art is one of the finest in the country, and, in fact, third largest in Sweden. It showcases renowned collections from international and Nordic artists. Its aim is to challenge the way we experience art by featuring artists and their works from unusual perspectives.

The museum also offers exhibitions, family activities, lectures and guided tours (in Swedish). There is a well-stocked museum shop with books and design products for all ages.

Permanent collections

The main collection of art is of international acclaim and showcases work from the 15th Century to the present day. These works are mostly from Europe and the United States, with important Nordic pieces on display as well, unique of its kind dating from the turn of the 19th Century. Here, you can see the collection of Nordic colorists, including Gothenburg colorists, as well as contemporary Nordic art, Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th Century, French Impressionism, international Modernism, and Romantic and Academic paintings from the 19th Century. Don’t miss the Fürstenberg Gallery, perhaps one of the most significant, and most popular, parts of the museum.

Hasselblad Center

Founded by Erna and Victor Hasselblad, today the Hasselblad Foundation is a wonderful center to visit to admire up-and-coming photographers, as well as those who are paving the way in new scientific research.

When you visit the Hasselblad Foundation you will be able to see their current exhibitions and library which contains over 16,000 photographic books and catalogs. Visitors are invited to spend time in the library and make use of the wide range of books, as well as the archive of historical material from Erna and Victor Hasselblad’s personal collection, such as cameras, photographs, manuals and more.

Alongside the temporary exhibitions is the permanent exhibition, Hasselblad and the Moon. To document Man’s first steps on the moon, a Hasselblad camera was used, and these images have become some of the most iconic in the world. This exhibition looks at the development of the camera, Hasselblad’s collaboration with NASA and the people behind the company and now Hasselblad Foundation.
