The term ‘bayou’ is native to Louisiana and stems from the Native American word 'bayuk' meaning 'small stream'.
The Cajuns of Louisiana were originally French-speaking settlers relocated from Nova Scotia.

Just outside New Orleans is the historic fishing village of Westwego, home to this natural swamp, which winds all the way down into the Gulf of Mexico.
