The Christian bishop Saint Denis was decapitated on the hill of Montmartre in 250 AD by the Romans.
Montmartre was outside Paris' city limits until 1 January 1860 when it was annexed to the city and became part of the 18th arrondissement of Paris.
Artists set up easels and tables near the Sacré Cœur basilica each day amongst the colorful setups of the Place du Tertre.
The Moulin Rouge was founded in 1889 and became the birthplace of the French cancan.
