Blessed by year-round beautiful weather and sunny skies, Orlando is best known for its major attractions like Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Seaworld. For anyone making their way to the City Beautiful for the first time, choosing a place to stay can be a little overwhelming. Still, we’re here to tell you that there’s no single winning spot to make your roots – rather, you should choose somewhere to suit your vacation plans and reasons for visiting. If you’re looking to hit the theme parks, then International Drive is where you’ll want to be. For nightlife and culture, you couldn’t do much better than downtown Orlando. Or, to live like the locals, check out Eatonville. Wherever you choose to stay in the city, you’ll have a great time. Check out our list for further guidance on which area would be right for you.

International Drive

Whilst there’s much to see and do everywhere in the city, International Drive remains a popular tourist hotspot for its proximity to the city’s most famous attractions. Stay here, and you’ll be well within reach of top theme parks like Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Aquatica. Though its theme parks are the area’s main draw, if you conduct a little research you’ll find ample reason to love this vibrant area of the city. Not unlike the ‘Vegas Strip’, the area offers clusters of hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions to choose from. From great entertainment districts to fun shopping opportunities, International Drive really has it all. Serving as a major tourist corridor since 1972, this area provides accommodation choices for all types of travellers. No matter what price range or style you’re looking for, you’re sure to find something to suit you. Travelling is made easy in this part of the city, with excellent bus services and even some hotels offering free shuttles to the main amusement parks. Whether you’re travelling with family or going solo, we recommend this spot for those who like to be in the center of all the action.

Kissimmee

Image of House, Housing, Villa, Pool, Water, Bed, Furniture, Chair,

Another great option for tourists is of course Kissimmee. A little further out from all the hustle and bustle, this area presents a great mix of nature and urban attractions to keep everybody happy. Whilst the area is still very close to Orlando’s most famous theme parks, you’ll find that there’s so much more to love about Kissimmee. From Fun Spot America to the Monument of States, there’s a lot to see here. Most visitors rent out condos or villas in gated communities, creating a relaxed vibe that is ideal for families and big groups. If you decide to go down this route, you’ll have access to the community park, clubhouse, and a common pool. A tried-and-true classic, there’s no going wrong when you stay in Kissimmee.

Winter Park

For those looking to explore a different side of the city, Winter Park may be your best bet. Once considered a winter resort, this charming area presents much to do for culture vultures and art lovers. For those with a thirst for knowledge, the area has the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum, Cornell Fine Arts Museum and Casa Feliz Historic Home Museum amongst many others. It doesn’t stop there though – Winter Park is also a prime destination for nature lovers, with over 70 parks in the vicinity which host various events, festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun or catch a late-night movie under the stars, you’ll never be bored in Winter Park. Staying in this area also means that you’ll still be super close to all those quintessential Orlando attractions, without feeling overwhelmed by them. Win-win!

Eatonville

If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit more relaxed, why try Eatonville? Located just a few miles north of the city, this area is often recognized for its unique history, as it was one of the first all-black self-governing municipalities in the United States. Today, this thriving cultural gem is a great place to stay in the city, offering something a little different from your typical Orlando vacation. Here, you’ll find fantastic one-of-kind cultural amenities, including the Zora Neale Hurston Museum and the Moseley House which are well worth the visit. Its dining and drinking scenes boast killer bars and restaurants – try southern-style fried fish at Soul Food Fantasy, or for something a little sweet, head over to DaJen Eats Café & Creamery. Offering a laidback ‘’live like the locals’’ experience, we love this spot because it allows us to see more of the area.

Downtown

Image of City, Urban, Cityscape, High Rise, Metropolis, Boat,

Last but most certainly not least, we recommend downtown Orlando for those traveling without kids. Matching the vibrant energy of Winter Park, the city’s historic center is known as a total hub of cultural activity. Daytime attractions are definitely not far and few between; with the Amway Center, Lake Eola Park, and Wells’ Built Museum just a stone's throw away, there’s a lot to see here. Come nightfall, the area is fun and bustling with life. If you’re wondering about dining options (and let’s be real, why wouldn’t you be?) don’t worry – the area presents some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. Getting around the area is pretty simple – you can hail down passing cabs, check out the city’s metropolitan bus system, or just walk it. Never one to disappoint, we particularly love this area to stay in because it’s always reforming itself, coming up with cool and interesting new things to do.

Crammed with iconic sites and bursting with fun, Orlando is well-recognized as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. A trip to the City Beautiful is a dream come true for many, so putting the right amount of research into where you stay is key. Whether you’re looking to hit the theme parks, visit the area’s best museums, or just relax, your chosen location will play heavily into your vacation. Of course, there isn’t one spot that is truly best for everyone – just one that is right for you. Wherever you choose to stay, just remember – the city is what you make of it. Things to do in Orlando for Birthdays

Though getting a year older can be a little daunting for some people, taking a vacation can sure soften the blow – and give us a reason to let loose and have a bit of fun! Thankfully, Orlando is the perfect place to celebrate, with exciting activities and attractions for those of all ages. For thrillseekers and dreamers alike, there’s no better place to be than the Magic Kingdom, of course. If you’re looking for something a little more out of the box, the Tree Trek Adventure Park provides a fantastic action-packed experience set against the backdrop of the wondrous local landscape. Or, if you just want to relax on your special day, the Disney Wilderness Preserve is the perfect respite from the city. No matter where your interests may lie, the city has so much to offer for every type of traveller. Hit the Theme Parks Though Orlando is packed with fantastic birthday attractions, one spot most certainly stands out above them all – yup, that’s right, it’s the Magic Kingdom! Drawing in millions of visitors each year, this place is known as one of the world's leading theme parks – and it's easy to see why. Offering over 40 rides, shows, and shopping destinations, the park is a great stop for young families and big groups as it has a wide variety of things to choose from. Here you’ll find favorites like Space Mountain, It’s a Small World, and Dumbo the Flying Elephant, amongst other world-famous attractions. An ultimate classic and eternal crowd-pleaser, this place is sure to bring that extra touch of magic to the party. Party planning can be a lot of effort; however, Orlando kind of does all the hard work for us. If you’re looking to bring your birthday year in with a splash, why not head over to Universal’s Volcano Bay? A constituent of the Universal Resort, this place is recognized as one of the top aquatic attractions in North America. For those looking to celebrate their birthday with a little bit of excitement and adventure, this place pretty much has it all. You’ll be able to find everything from edgy thrill rides and tube slides to rapid rides and wave pools, all in one place. Still, for those members of the group who prefer to play it safe, the park also has a beach area and cabanas to chill under. In addition, there are a number of dining options, making this spot perfect for large parties. Bringing the good clean fun to the party, there’s nobody who doesn’t enjoy a good water park! Have Fun Outdoors Travelling with kids can be a difficult feat, let alone when there’s a birthday coming up. If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, you might want to check out the next item on our list. Perfect for bold and energetic youngsters, the Tree Trek Adventure Park changes up the scenery by providing a memorable experience set against the natural pine forests of Kissimmee. This experience involves tackling a challenging aerial obstacle course to truly get the adrenaline pumping. With around 100 different games, there’s plenty of fun to be had here. Whiz through the trees on zip lines, test your balance on the suspended bridges and climb up 50-foot ladders. There are different courses catering to variant age groups and the experience is run by professional guides to ensure personal safety. For those who want to keep it a little more low-key, don’t worry – we've got you covered! Perfect for any occasion big or small, the Disney Wilderness Preserve is one of our favorite things to do in Orlando. Situated just a quick ride out from Disney World, the reserve covers over 12, 000 acres of swampland and lakes to be explored. A fantastic stop for nature lovers, the park features over 1,000 species of plants and animals all thriving together. This place is a fantastic choice since it provides a wide variety of fun on-site activities and excursions to be enjoyed. Beat the heat in one of the park’s pool areas, cruise some of the city’s most stunning lakes, or kick back with a movie under the stars. Whatever you choose to do, we’re sure it’ll be great! Have a Blast! If you’re having trouble picking an activity, why not go for something that everybody will enjoy? Located just north of the city, the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens offers a fantastic way to view animals in a kind and respectful way. Standing out from other zoological gardens you may have come across, this place acquires its name from the native gardens on which it is built. As an effect, you can stroll through beautiful protected wetlands, view animals native to the area, and get friendly with some interesting reptiles. Still, this place isn’t all about its local creatures. In fact, you can view over 500 animals on the premises from over 205 species, including big cats, giraffes, and a wonderful Indian rhinoceros. Combining fun with learning, the institute works to teach its visitors about environmentalism and animal conservation. What could possibly be more wholesome? As far as classic things to do on your birthday go, museums don’t usually top the list. Though the thought of it can sound a little dull, we promise that this next suggestion is anything but. A sure-fire way to keep everybody entertained, the Museum of Illusions offers an interactive, immersive experience to keep you guessing. Inside, the institute has around 50 exciting exhibits which work to trick the eye and twist the mind. If you’re looking for a way to test your one-year-older brain, here it is. Just don’t forget to bring your camera! Everybody has different ideas for what makes the perfect birthday. Luckily, Orlando is the perfect destination for a spot of birthday bliss. Known as the “Alligator Capital of the World,” this quirky, family-run spot combines animal adventure with classic roadside charm.  At Gatorland, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with alligators great and small—even rare white gators if you’re lucky. Watch pro wranglers feed supersized monsters in the Gator Jumparoo show, then giggle at the antics on the Gator Wrestling stage (don’t worry, it’s all in good fun). The petting zoo and aviary add extra family appeal, and the splash park helps everyone cool down on hot afternoons.  If you’re the adventurous type, try the Screamin’ Gator Zip Line—whooshing over a pit full of gators is an Orlando rite of passage. The boardwalk nature trails take you through cypress groves and let you spot herons, otters, and turtles. On Memorial Day weekend, Gatorland often hosts live bands and flag-raising ceremonies, offering a unique blend of local tradition and respectful remembrance.  The vibe at Gatorland is pure Florida: laid-back, friendly, a little bit cheeky, and totally unforgettable. Bring your camera—and your appetite for adventure.  Island H2O Water Park: Your Splashy Summer Kickoff  Orlando in late May brings plenty of sunshine—luckily, there’s Island H2O Water Park to keep everyone cool. This isn’t just another lazy-river-and-wave-pool spot; Island H2O delivers wild slides, interactive zones, and a playful digital twist that lets you personalize your water rides. You’ll love the park’s mix of heart-pounding slides (think drop loops and racing tubes) and chill-out spots like the adults-only pool and private cabanas.  Friendly vibes and thumping summertime tunes set the mood, making this place a party for all ages. Families gravitate toward the kid-friendly splash zones, teens race down the multi-lane slides, and everyone ends up drifting around the Live! Lagoon. A bonus: at several rides, you can choose your own music playlists and light schemes for a truly custom experience—great for making memories (and fun videos).  For Memorial Day weekend, the park often amps up with DJs, foam parties, and delicious cookouts, like BBQ brisket sandwiches and specialty drinks served poolside. There’s plenty of shade and staff are all about fun and safety, so you can just focus on floating, splashing, and soaking up that sweet start-of-summer vibe.  Fun Spot America: Classic Americana, Orlando Style  Want a jolt of nostalgia with your thrill rides? Fun Spot America brings the amusement park magic without the overwhelming crowds—think bright lights, festive tunes, and good old-fashioned fun. The wooden roller coaster here, White Lightning, rattles and roars just the way you remember from childhood, and there’s also a steel coaster for modern twist-lovers. Go-karts remain the star of the show, offering multiple tracks so everyone (yes, even grandma) can get in on the racing action.  Midway games, classic carnival snacks (deep-fried Oreos, anyone?), and a sprawling arcade deliver the all-American amusement park vibe. Plus, entry to the park is free—you only pay for the rides you want—making this a flexible and budget-friendly add to your Memorial Day plans.  On holiday weekends, Fun Spot America hosts live music, patriotic displays, and even the odd fireworks show. The atmosphere is always buzzing but never stressful, and you’ll spot both tourists and Orlando locals mixing it up well into the evening. It’s the ultimate spot for families wanting laid-back fun, teens craving adventure, or anyone up for a bit of old-school Americana beneath the Florida sun.  Museum of Illusions: Mind-Bending Family Fun  Looking for an indoor break from the Florida sun—but still want excitement? Museum of Illusions in Orlando is anything but ordinary. Here, you’ll wander through rooms that defy gravity, snap photos that trick the eye, and giggle your way through wild interactive exhibits. You haven’t truly seen Grandma until she’s “shrunk” inside the Ames Room or your entire group appears to float upside down!  What makes it special for Memorial Day? It’s a place that gets families laughing—and keeps both big kids and grownups guessing. The staff encourages you to take loads of photos, so your Instagram will be the envy of everyone back home. The design is smart and modern, with friendly guides helping you get that perfect surreal shot.  Just outside, the streets of ICON Park beckon—so you can combine a morning of quirky fun with a leisurely lunch or an ice cream under the shade trees. If your Memorial Day weekend brings unexpected weather or you just want to cool off with a dose of brain-teasing entertainment, Museum of Illusions offers a truly memorable twist.  Clearwater Marine Aquarium: See the Healing Power of the Sea  If you fancy a day trip, Clearwater Marine Aquarium—about a 90-minute scenic drive from Orlando—offers a unique Memorial Day experience blending inspiring animal encounters, conservation, and sunshine. Unlike the bustling theme parks, this working hospital for sea turtles, dolphins, and otters has a real sense of purpose. You’ll meet famous rescued residents like Winter the dolphin (star of Dolphin Tale), learn about wildlife rehabilitation, and watch trainers care for creatures big and small.  There’s a hands-on Discovery Zone for kids where they can touch stingrays and see sea turtles recovering, plus behind-the-scenes tours if you’re curious about marine medicine and rescue. The glass-walled pools overlook the bay, so the atmosphere is tranquil and uplifting—a great spot for families looking to honor Memorial Day in a way that connects you to the natural world.  Before heading back to Orlando, grab lunch at the on-site café or try casual seafood classics like grouper sandwiches and hush puppies at the nearby marina—views are, of course, endless blue water and bobbing sailboats. For animal lovers or anyone wanting to see real-life heroes in action, Clearwater Marine Aquarium offers a touching twist on your holiday weekend.  Daytona International Speedway Track Tour: Start Your Engines  Car fans, speed demons, and anyone craving something out of the ordinary—you can’t miss Daytona International Speedway. Less than an hour from Orlando, this legendary track is synonymous with American motorsports. On Memorial Day weekend, things rev up: take a tour of the racetrack, explore the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, and snap photos at Victory Lane.  The tours here are behind the scenes and totally interactive. Sit in the driver’s seat of real NASCAR vehicles, peek into the pit areas, and soak up stories of racing legends who’ve made history on these turns. Guides bring every corner of this sprawling complex to life, sharing both triumphs and tales of bravery.  Outside, the energy is all about high-octane fun. Pit stop at SR Perrott’s Taproom nearby for a quick drink, or swing by local BBQ joints famed for their smoked brisket sandwiches and tangy sides. Memorial Day tributes abound—expect American flags, special displays, and perhaps a pop-up show and shine. For adrenaline junkies, history buffs, or anyone wanting a taste of all-American horsepower, Daytona delivers.  Picnic and Paddle at Lake Eola Park  For a slower, more scenic celebration, locals love Lake Eola Park—a green oasis right in downtown Orlando. The park’s central lake is ringed by an easy-to-walk path, shaded by ancient oaks and dotted with art sculptures and friendly swans. On Memorial Day weekend, the lawn fills with families and friends laying out blanket picnics—think deli sandwiches, fresh fruit, and baked treats from one of Orlando’s great downtown bakeries (Sugardough Bakehouse is a winner for pastries).  Feeling active? Rent a swan boat to pedal around the lake or take a yoga class in the open air. If you’re lucky, you might catch a concert at the floating amphitheater or stumble on a local craft market. The vibe is laid-back and festive—whether you’re chasing after kids, reading beneath a palm, or clinking cold drinks with friends.  Lake Eola is also the site of Orlando’s community Memorial Day commemorations, including flag-raising ceremonies and moving tributes to fallen heroes. It’s a beautiful reminder of the meaning behind the holiday, set in a spot that glows with natural beauty and local spirit.  Lakefront Fireworks & Memorial Events  No Memorial Day is really complete without a stunning fireworks finish, and Orlando never disappoints. Check out local event listings for lakefront shows—Lake Eola and nearby Clermont’s Waterfront Park both offer choreographed fireworks that light up the sky, alongside food trucks, live music, and festive activities for all ages. Kids wave sparklers, grownups lounge on blankets, and everyone looks skyward as the night fills with color.  During the day, many parks and neighborhoods host parades, vet tributes, and open-air concerts—think country music, classic rock, and patriotic sing-alongs, all under the Florida stars. These events feel like a true community celebration, with a distinctly welcoming, inclusive vibe.  Want to level up your picnic game? Order takeout from local favorites like Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa (love their brisket and fried yuca) or Se7en Bites (stock up on mini pies). With food, friends, and a fireworks finale, you’ve got the perfect Orlando Memorial Day memory.    Whether you dream of rocket launches, water park thrills, or a classic family picnic beneath swaying palms, Orlando brings endless ways to make your Memorial Day shine. Explore heroes of land, sea, and the stars, or simply relax in the sweet Florida warmth. Things to do Alone in Orlando

Wondering what to do alone in Orlando? The city is a great destination to discover in the company of others, but it is equally exciting for solo travellers. As one of the most popular tourist hotspots in the United States, the area presents no shortage of incredible attractions and hidden gems on the tourist trail. The city's museums are an absolute must - no matter where your interests may lie, you’re sure to find something to suit your tastes. If you’re a nature lover, there’s no better place to be than Harry P. Leu Gardens. For those looking to take a bit of downtime, the Winter Park Farmers’ Market is the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon in the sun. So, if you’re planning to make the visit, have a read through our list of the best things to do alone in the city. You won’t be the first person to explore Orlando, and you certainly won’t be last! Find Fun Activities Just because you’re travelling solo doesn’t mean you have to rule out certain activities. For those adventurous types out there, why not shake things up a little by spending the day at Orlando Watersports Complex? Perfect for sunseekers and sporty types alike, this place is recognized as one of the largest wakeboard parks in the United States. Still, that's not all there is to try out there – this unique aquation attraction has waterskiing, kneeboarding, boating, and much more, all set against the beautiful natural backdrop of Orlando. If you’re worried about getting a handle on things, there’s no need to worry – you'll be accompanied by trained professionals to guide you through each class. Highly invigorating and a little different, this place is sure to scratch that itch to try something new. For a truly engaging educational experience, why not head over to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex? Built onto the site of the Kennedy Space Center (so you know it’s for real), the institute offers a comprehensive view of the history of space travel. The exhibits cover everything you could possibly think of to do with outer space aviation; there’s a U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, a garden with real rockets, and astronaut training simulators. In addition, you can attend talks held by veteran astronauts, happy to answer any questions you may have. As fascinating as it is fun, the museum provides a unique cultural experience quite like no other. Learn Something New Whilst Orlando may best be known for its famous theme parks, it’s also home to some wonderful cultural institutions perfect for those with curious minds. Founded by a group of art enthusiasts in 1924, the Orlando Museum of Art is a total must-see for all creative types. The establishment’s evolving collection of over 2,400 works includes everything from Contemporary Art to that of Ancient Americas. Upon entrance, visitors can enjoy exciting exhibitions covering everything from fine art and avant-garde sculpture to classical paintings. Look out for seminal pieces by Georgia O’Keeffe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Andy Warhol. Another one of our favorite solo activities for the city is visiting the Orlando Fire Museum. For firefighting fanatics and history lovers alike, the institute seeks to present the history of the city’s fire division in an interesting and educational manner. Walking through the museum is a fascinating experience; you’ll be able to spot differences in technology and design as you move each era. Amongst the institute's permanent collection, you can view antique tools and apparatus from as early as the 1900s. Still, the museum’s main draw is its impressive collection of vintage fire engines, showcasing how much things have changed. As intriguing as it is unique, we love this place because it’s impossible to leave without having learned something new. Have Fun Outdoors Since Florida is famed for its beautiful weather, it will come as no shock that Orlando is home to many lush green spaces. If you’re looking to spend some time in nature, look no further than Harry P. Leu Gardens. Years ago, the Leus travelled the world, bringing back a wide variety of exotic plants to fill the park. Thankfully, the garden still flourishes due to Florida’s subtropical climate, and is open for everyone to visit all year round! Covering over 50 acres, the garden features a tropical rain forest, a formal rose garden, a butterfly garden, and more. In addition, there are permanent and rotating art exhibits, and a historic home open for viewing. Whether you're looking to have a picnic or soak up the sun, this place has it all. If strolling through stands of artisanal cheese and raw honey sounds good to you, then don’t worry – we've got you covered! Taking place every Saturday, the Winter Park Farmers’ Market is a total favorite for locals and visitors alike. Though this event is well-recognized for its fresh produce, its real draw is its many food purveyors, offering a wide variety of dishes from across the globe. Don’t miss out on hot chicken pot pies or Jamaican patties fresh from the oven, all washed down with a large glass of beer. Still, that isn’t all there is to see here. Walking around the market, you’ll find everything from souvenirs and trinkets to original art and jewellery. With its fun, laid-back energy, the market provides a totally fuss-free way to get to know the area. What more would we ask for? Exploring a new city alone can sound a little daunting – still, with the right planning, it doesn’t have to be. Solo travel in Orlando can be wonderful, presenting an exciting mix of cool attractions and points of interest to be discovered. Looking for culture? Look no further than the Orlando Museum of Art. For those who want to get active, the Orlando Watersports Complex is your best bet. If you’re thinking of something a little more low-key, the Winter Park Farmers’ Market should fulfil that very need. Orlando is a city with endless possibilities, so you’re sure to find something for you. To find out how to save money on your trip, check out our Explorer Pass and All-Inclusive Pass.
