La Conciergerie and River Seine

If you’ve got La Conciergerie on your Paris dream list, you’re already in for a fascinating slice of French history. But step outside those famous walls and you’ll discover a neighborhood packed with surprises—think gothic chapels glowing with stained glass, riverside picnics, beloved chocolate shops, and the kind of cafés that feel plucked from a Parisian daydream. Whether you’re a history buff, a food lover, or someone drawn to secret gardens and jazz cellars, this corner of the city delivers. So, ready for an adventure in the heart of Paris? Here’s how to squeeze every last drop of charm from your time near La Conciergerie.

Our favorite things to do near La Conciergerie include:

  • Sainte-Chapelle
  • Seine River Cruise
  • Place Dauphine
  • Les Caves du Louvre
  • Gourmet Chocolate Museum
  • Shakespeare and Company
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Odette Bakery
  • Centre Pompidou

Sainte-Chapelle: Experience a Stained Glass Dream

Just steps from La Conciergerie, Sainte-Chapelle rises like a secret jewel box in the city’s heart. Push open the doors and you’re wrapped in the flicker of a thousand colors, thanks to 15 monumental stained glass windows soaring nearly to the ceiling. Sainte-Chapelle’s interior feels enchanted, especially when sunlight pours through, filling the space with shimmering blues, reds, and golds.

Built in the 13th century to house precious relics, it’s now a serene, awe-inspiring escape from city bustle. Unlike crowded hotspots, Sainte-Chapelle’s tranquil vibe lets you truly soak in every detail—whether you’re tracing the intricate bible scenes on the glass or listening to your footsteps echo on cool stone floors. Evening classical concerts here transform the experience; music and history combine for a night you won’t forget. If architecture, color, and a pinch of Parisian magic are your things, Sainte-Chapelle is non-negotiable.

Seine River Cruise: See Paris from the Water

While the Conciergerie once watched over centuries of boats gliding down the Seine, now it’s your turn. Just a few minutes’ stroll from La Conciergerie’s doors, the Bateaux Parisiens River Cruise docks invite you to relax and drift past Paris’ greatest hits in style.

Float under centuries-old bridges, trace both Right and Left bank sights, and grab those picture-perfect angles of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. Everything feels somehow grander and more laid-back when viewed from the water. The cruise features live guides (or handy audio), serving up quirky tales and fun facts as you pass riverside gardens and grand palaces. Whether you’re basking in the sunshine up top or cozy inside on a cooler day, this is Paris at its most romantic and relaxing.

Place Dauphine: Picnic in a Parisian Hideaway

Street Sign for Place Dauphine

Craving something a little more peaceful? Duck behind the Conciergerie and find the enchanting Place Dauphine. Shaped like a triangle, framed by leafy trees and pastel 17th-century houses, this square serves up prime picnic territory just steps from the river. Local Parisians gather for pétanque matches and lazy lunches at tiny pavement cafés.

The real joy comes from the atmosphere—calm but buzzing with quiet conversation and soft laughter. Find a bench and unwrap market finds, or sip an espresso at Ma Salle à Manger or Restaurant Paul while soaking in centuries of stories. Place Dauphine feels just far enough from the crowds but close enough to all you want to see next, making it perfect for a mid-day pit-stop.

Les Caves du Louvre: Sip French History

Wine lovers, prepare for a treat! Just a gentle stroll from La Conciergerie, Les Caves du Louvre opens its atmospheric cellars to visitors eager to explore the depths of French winemaking. Here, centuries-old vaults—originally built for King Louis XV—welcome you to taste, sniff and swirl your way through France’s best flavors.

Each vaulted room introduces a sense, from aroma to color, and tasting flights help you discover personal favorites. Expert guides walk you through the essential lingo and traditions, so you’ll leave feeling both a little giddy and surprisingly savvy. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just wine-curious, the blend of history, fun workshops, and glasses of Bordeaux or Champagne set the tone for a memorable afternoon.

Gourmet Chocolate Museum: Sweet Secrets Unwrapped

Prefer cocoa over cabernet? The Gourmet Chocolate Museum is a short wander from La Conciergerie and a wonderland for chocoholics. This museum isn’t just a place to look at chocolate (though the historic molds and cocoa bean exhibits are genuinely cool); you’ll sample and experience it too.

The journey covers everything from Mayan cocoa rituals to cutting-edge Parisian chocolatiers. Kids (and grown-ups) can try hands-on workshops and, most crucially, taste the goods along the way. Want to become a true connoisseur? Compare single-origin bars or learn the difference between chocolate styles in an engaging, zero-snobbery setting. It’s a delicious, light-hearted way to break up your history crawl.

Shakespeare and Company: A Bookworm’s Wonderland

Easily one of the world’s most beloved bookstores, Shakespeare and Company sits a short walk from La Conciergerie and beckons with its emerald-green façade, crooked shelves, and famously friendly resident cat. Literary legends like Hemingway and Fitzgerald once haunted these paper-packed aisles, and a playful sense of community is alive and well today.

Look out for quirky personal notes tucked between the pages, a grand piano awaiting impromptu performances, and the cozy upstairs nook where readers settle in with a tea or coffee. The store also hosts readings, book launches, and literary festivals, infusing the air with inspiration. Whether you’re a serious reader or just want a perfect Parisian souvenir, browsing here is bucket list material.

Notre Dame Cathedral: Storied Towers and Spirit

Couple at Notre Dame

No Paris itinerary is complete without stepping inside Notre-Dame. The cathedral sits just across the river from La Conciergerie and feels as epic as ever—even while restoration work continues. Marvel at its Gothic grandeur, tilt your head to take in the soaring towers, trace the delicate stained glass, and spot the legendary gargoyles keeping watch over the city. And for a touch of adventure, don’t miss the archaeological crypt below.

The area around Notre Dame buzzes with street musicians, artists, and markets selling books, postcards, and vintage prints. Find Point Zero on the cobblestones (Paris’ geographic heart), or pause at a riverside bench to soak up the lively atmosphere. You’ll leave feeling you’ve touched the very soul of Paris.

Odette: Cream Puffs with a Notre Dame View

When hunger starts calling, make your way to Odette, a pint-sized bakery tucked in a charming alley just a few minutes from La Conciergerie. Odette is all about one thing: glossy, irresistible choux pastries filled with rich creams in classic and creative flavors.

Grab a box of pistachio, coffee, and vanilla puffs, then climb the stairs to the snug upstairs room—windows aim straight at Notre Dame. The ambiance is casual, and the pastries delicate and perfectly Parisian. It’s easy to lose track of time here, sipping espresso and treating yourself to another choux just because you can.

Centre Pompidou: Art, Architecture, and Panoramic Views

Sometimes you need to shake off the dust of medieval legends and step boldly into Paris’s modern soul. That’s where the Centre Pompidou delivers in style. Just a 15-minute stroll from La Conciergerie, this unmistakable building is pure architectural rebellion: its colorful pipes, exposed escalators, and bold design have made it a contemporary landmark since the 1970s.

Inside, you’ll find one of Europe’s premier collections of modern art. Think Picasso, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Delaunay, and Matisse—plus ever-changing exhibitions from living legends and the avant-garde alike. But the art isn’t the only draw. Head up the exterior escalators (which look like a giant glass caterpillar scaling the side of the building) and you’re rewarded with a sweeping rooftop view across Paris. Spot the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur, and the playful rooftops of Le Marais. The rooftop terrace also has a cool café—a perfect stop for people-watching or recharging over an espresso.

And there you have it: from dungeon tours to chocolate tastings and breathtaking views, the world around La Conciergerie offers a peek into Paris both classic and creative. Let your feet (and taste buds) lead the way, and you’ll soon find that Parisian magic is never more than a corner or two away.

Adventurous Things to do in Paris

Paris... City of Light, City of Love, City of... Adventure? Think of Paris and you’re more likely to picture yourself indulging in romantic riverside strolls and lazy pastry-based brunches than in nerve-jangling high-octane pursuits. In fact, Paris offers a surprising array of unusual and adventurous activities that will take you out of your comfort zone, from waterskiing on the Seine to perfecting the French art of macaron-making and gorging on snails and sea urchins. Read on for our pick of adventurous things to do in Paris. Adventures Above and Below Paris Fans of Les Misérables will find much to enjoy in the Paris sewage system which, as Victor Hugo so succinctly put it in his celebrated 1862 novel ‘is slime, minus the human form’. But don’t let that put you off: the Paris Sewer Museum takes you on a fascinating (and completely sanitary!) journey into the city’s underbelly, where you can wade through centuries of sewage history and learn all about the sewermen who worked here. Exhibits include antique equipment and you can take a guided tour with an expert while you’re there. Pause in the gift shop to pick up some stuffed rats for your loved ones on the way out and, most importantly, don’t forget to flush! For a somewhat more claustrophobic underground adventure, the Paris Catacombs are hard to beat. This labyrinth of bone-filled tunnels is said to contain the mortal remains of some six million Parisians, mostly displaced here from overflowing cemeteries in the 18th and early 19th centuries. You’ll notice a chill in the air as you descend the 131 steps to enter the tunnels. From here, there’s a 1.5-kilometer loop through the dead air of this underground ossuary, with walls constructed from densely stacked human bones and skulls. An unmissable adventure, but definitely not one for the faint-hearted. Paris also offers plenty of great options for adrenalin heads with their eyes on the skies. Climb the Eiffel Tower’s 674 steps to reach the viewing platform on the second floor, soar 150 meters above the Parc André Citroën aboard the Ballon de Paris Generali, a thrilling ascent that provides stunning 360-degree views across the city. And, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even fly over the city’s most famous landmarks by jetpack! Ok, ok, so this one from Flyview Paris is a virtual reality experience, but it’s no less thrilling for it. Much like a flight simulator, it’s designed to emulate the real-life sensations of jetpack flying, so you really will feel like you’re cruising over the Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Well, for a few moments anyway. Let’s Get Physical Serene sunset cruise not exciting enough for ya? Don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Located on the banks of the Seine in the Bois de Boulogne, one of Paris’s biggest and most beautiful parks, the Ski Nautique Club de Paris offers 3.5 kilometers of water for water-skiing. It’s open to abilities of all levels so everyone from newbie to expert can get involved. Learn the basics or show off your best river acrobatics if you’re already a pro on the water. If you struggle to find your sea legs, you might prefer to join one of the city’s big rollerblading events instead. Weekends see around 20 kilometers of Paris streets closed to traffic as locals roll out of their homes in their thousands for the Sunday Skate, to weave, wobble and wend their way around major landmarks from the starting point in Place de la Bastille. The Pari Roller is a wheely great way to experience the City of Light by night, with a skating tour that kicks off 10PM Fridays in Montparnasse and rolls on into the early hours of Saturday morning. Do Something New! There’s nothing more adventurous than stepping out of your comfort zone to learn a new craft, and – let’s be honest – what skill could possibly be more life-enhancing than the art of macaron-making? These dainty, delicate and oh-so-delicious little confections are, alongside braille, pasteurization and hair dryers, surely one of France’s greatest ever inventions. This 90-minute pastry masterclass at Paris’s iconic Galeries Lafayette Haussman department store includes creation, assembly and, of course, the all-important tasting of your treats. Want to really impress your friends when you return from Paris? Find out how to transform your potato dauphinoise from a disappointing beige mush into a lip-smacking work of art at the Alain Ducasse Cooking School. And, if you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can even have a go at learning the very Parisian art of burlesque. Afterwards, head over to Crazy Horse for an evening of high-kicking, high-octane entertainment, and to see how the experts do it. Adventures in Food and Drink When in Paris... eat as the Parisians eat. Snails and frogs’ legs are just the beginning of this great nation’s culinary specialties and, if you can set your squeamishness aside, you might just be surprised. Snails in particular – plump little parcels of deliciousness served in the shell in a hot garlic-and-herb butter – may well prove life-changing. But did you know the French also do a fine line in sea urchin? That’s right: those spiny blighters that skewered your big toe off the coast of Mexico back in ‘95. These sweet, umami-tasting creatures are also said to rival oysters for their aphrodisiac power. Ooh la la! The British novelist Anthony Burgess once described the experience of snacking on durian fruit as 'like eating sweet raspberry blancmange in the lavatory'. A similar half-compliment could be made for traditional French andouillette, a sausage made from pig intestines and seasoning, and a close cousin of South American chitterlings. Its – shall we say – ripe odor might not win you many friends in the restaurant, yet locals swear by the sweet flavor, assuming of course that you can overcome your natural aversion to the smell and tuck in. A warning to the curious though: this one is strictly for those with guts of steel. Many more epicurean adventures await you in the weird and wonderful bars and restaurants of Paris, where you can variously: drink wine from baby bottles at legendary Montmartre restaurant Le Refuge des Fondus, have coffee and cake with a cat, be serenaded by opera singers as you dine and take on an actual pro-wrestler in the basement between courses. Only in Paris. Save on adventurous things to do in Paris Save on admission to Paris attractions with Go City. Check out @GoCity on Instagram and Facebook for the latest top tips and attraction info.
