And don't forget your ID; they'll check this at the door. Also, there's a strict no-bag policy inside the gallery, so pack light or use the lockers. Lastly, wear comfy shoes. This grand collection was built up over several centuries of Borghese nobility, particularly by Scipione Borghese, a prominent cardinal during the Paul V papacy. The Borgheses are one of the best-known ancient houses in Italy, famed for their involvement in government, society, and the Catholic church.
The influential family amassed a great fortune, and so big was their collection of antiquities it was decided to move all of it from their other Roman properties to the beautiful Villa Borghese. The stunning Villa is set within the Villa Borghese park, a lush green space to while away an afternoon.
By 1901, the museum became the property of the Italian government and is known today as one of Rome’s most popular museums.
