JaydenGreat tour guide and recommendations and good tour of the area
Longer Than It Needed To Be
Homer3DI want to be positive but also provide real honest feedback. When I first saw the tour was an estimated 4 hours, I was thinking “Wow, we must be visiting a lot of places”. I have been on other food tours and they were not 4 hours long but visited plenty of spots. So it was a little shocking when we started the tour and our guide mentioned that we would be visiting 5 places. How can it possibly take 4 hours to visit only 5 places? Well, I will tell you. The first 45 minutes or so is talking. You can tell our guide loves what he does, which is talk. Like seriously, rambling on type of talk. So what do we end up doing? Just standing there listening…for 45 minutes. When we finally start moving, the talking doesn’t stop. He gives a somewhat history lesson on the area (Hells Kitchen) and some details on the restaurant we happen to be headed to. That part is fine because we are at least heading to a specific location and he is staying on topic. When we get to the first spot our guide tells us to place our order in first before using the bathroom or anything like that because we want to be in and out as quickly as possible. And this is a reoccurring theme at every stop. I was once again thinking to myself, “why are being rushed during the food part of our food tour?” Well, I will tell you why. I already mentioned the very long into at the start of the tour, but our guide needed to make sure there was enough time at the end of the tour (before visiting stop 5) to give us a sales pitch. This is not a joke. He took us to small park like area where he started his pitch. All that was missing was powerpoint slides. I honestly don’t know how long this part took because I tuned him out. I don’t even remember all the details but it had something to do with an app where people would use to get food recommendations…so Yelp but just for restaurants he likes/recommends? As far as the food goes, I would say 2 of 5 places were a hit. Our guide has specifically requested we not mentioned any of the restaurants so I will honor that. We loved the empanada place and one (of the two) dessert places. I will say this one taco place was not good at all. I have had way better tacos from food trucks and street vendors. The other place we liked was a pizza place but it was a chain restaurant. I didn’t know it at the time because it happens to be chain that doesn’t exist on my side of the USA. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good pizza but I would have preferred a ‘local gem’. If this tour was not part of the GoCity pass, I would not have picked this tour. You buy/pay for your own food and your rushed while doing it. So if you were paying for this tour, you are paying for a guide to talk (and talk and talk), usher you in/out of restaurants as fast as possible and sit through sales pitch at the end. Would not be worth it in my opinion.
