Where to Stay in Orlando

Published: July 18, 2024

Blessed by year-round beautiful weather and sunny skies, Orlando is best known for its major attractions like Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Seaworld. For anyone making their way to the City Beautiful for the first time, choosing a place to stay can be a little overwhelming. Still, we’re here to tell you that there’s no single winning spot to make your roots – rather, you should choose somewhere to suit your vacation plans and reasons for visiting. If you’re looking to hit the theme parks, then International Drive is where you’ll want to be. For nightlife and culture, you couldn’t do much better than downtown Orlando. Or, to live like the locals, check out Eatonville. Wherever you choose to stay in the city, you’ll have a great time. Check out our list for further guidance on which area would be right for you.

International Drive

Whilst there’s much to see and do everywhere in the city, International Drive remains a popular tourist hotspot for its proximity to the city’s most famous attractions. Stay here, and you’ll be well within reach of top theme parks like Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Aquatica. Though its theme parks are the area’s main draw, if you conduct a little research you’ll find ample reason to love this vibrant area of the city. Not unlike the ‘Vegas Strip’, the area offers clusters of hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions to choose from. From great entertainment districts to fun shopping opportunities, International Drive really has it all. Serving as a major tourist corridor since 1972, this area provides accommodation choices for all types of travellers. No matter what price range or style you’re looking for, you’re sure to find something to suit you. Travelling is made easy in this part of the city, with excellent bus services and even some hotels offering free shuttles to the main amusement parks. Whether you’re travelling with family or going solo, we recommend this spot for those who like to be in the center of all the action.

Kissimmee

Another great option for tourists is of course Kissimmee. A little further out from all the hustle and bustle, this area presents a great mix of nature and urban attractions to keep everybody happy. Whilst the area is still very close to Orlando’s most famous theme parks, you’ll find that there’s so much more to love about Kissimmee. From Fun Spot America to the Monument of States, there’s a lot to see here. Most visitors rent out condos or villas in gated communities, creating a relaxed vibe that is ideal for families and big groups. If you decide to go down this route, you’ll have access to the community park, clubhouse, and a common pool. A tried-and-true classic, there’s no going wrong when you stay in Kissimmee.

Winter Park

For those looking to explore a different side of the city, Winter Park may be your best bet. Once considered a winter resort, this charming area presents much to do for culture vultures and art lovers. For those with a thirst for knowledge, the area has the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum, Cornell Fine Arts Museum and Casa Feliz Historic Home Museum amongst many others. It doesn’t stop there though – Winter Park is also a prime destination for nature lovers, with over 70 parks in the vicinity which host various events, festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun or catch a late-night movie under the stars, you’ll never be bored in Winter Park. Staying in this area also means that you’ll still be super close to all those quintessential Orlando attractions, without feeling overwhelmed by them. Win-win!

Eatonville

If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit more relaxed, why try Eatonville? Located just a few miles north of the city, this area is often recognized for its unique history, as it was one of the first all-black self-governing municipalities in the United States. Today, this thriving cultural gem is a great place to stay in the city, offering something a little different from your typical Orlando vacation. Here, you’ll find fantastic one-of-kind cultural amenities, including the Zora Neale Hurston Museum and the Moseley House which are well worth the visit. Its dining and drinking scenes boast killer bars and restaurants – try southern-style fried fish at Soul Food Fantasy, or for something a little sweet, head over to DaJen Eats Café & Creamery. Offering a laidback ‘’live like the locals’’ experience, we love this spot because it allows us to see more of the area.

Downtown

Last but most certainly not least, we recommend downtown Orlando for those traveling without kids. Matching the vibrant energy of Winter Park, the city’s historic center is known as a total hub of cultural activity. Daytime attractions are definitely not far and few between; with the Amway Center, Lake Eola Park, and Wells’ Built Museum just a stone's throw away, there’s a lot to see here. Come nightfall, the area is fun and bustling with life. If you’re wondering about dining options (and let’s be real, why wouldn’t you be?) don’t worry – the area presents some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. Getting around the area is pretty simple – you can hail down passing cabs, check out the city’s metropolitan bus system, or just walk it. Never one to disappoint, we particularly love this area to stay in because it’s always reforming itself, coming up with cool and interesting new things to do.

Crammed with iconic sites and bursting with fun, Orlando is well-recognized as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. A trip to the City Beautiful is a dream come true for many, so putting the right amount of research into where you stay is key. Whether you’re looking to hit the theme parks, visit the area’s best museums, or just relax, your chosen location will play heavily into your vacation. Of course, there isn’t one spot that is truly best for everyone – just one that is right for you. Wherever you choose to stay, just remember – the city is what you make of it. See the sites, discover new things, and most importantly, have fun! To find out how to save money on your trip, check out our Explorer Pass and All-Inclusive Pass. Thursday Thrills: The Ultimate Orlando Day Out

You’ve landed in Orlando, the playground of Florida, but it’s not just the weekends that pack a punch here. Thursdays in Orlando sparkle with possibility—fewer crowds, cool events, and a city that never sleeps on the fun. Whether you’re seeking theme park thrills, eye-popping museums, family-friendly wildlife, or just the perfect meal to feast on, we’ve scouted the best ways to make your Thursday unforgettable. From world-class attractions to quirky surprises and delicious pit stops, let us show you how to make every Thursday in Orlando a day to remember.  Here’s our cheat sheet to an amazing Thursday in Orlando:  Kennedy Space Center  The Orlando Eye  SEA LIFE Aquarium  WonderWorks  Gatorland  Island H2O Water Park  Madame Tussauds Orlando  The Outta Control Magic Dinner Show  Disney Springs nightlife and foodie finds  Kennedy Space Center: Launch your Thursday into Orbit  Fuel up your curiosity and begin your Thursday at the Kennedy Space Center, where the wonders of human exploration blast off—literally. You’ll stand beneath Saturn V rockets, gaze at real Space Shuttles, and maybe catch an astronaut talk that gives goosebumps in all the best ways. The Center’s sprawling campus lets you experience riveting stories of space discovery, from the Space Race to today’s Mars missions.  What makes a Thursday special here? The crowds are a little lighter, making for a more personalized visit. Get up close with the Atlantis Shuttle, walk beneath genuine moon rockets, and interact with countless hands-on exhibits. Younger visitors will love the immersive astronaut training simulators—where you can “float” in space or try your hand at docking the International Space Station.  If you’re feeling peckish, try the Moon Rock Café for classic American bites and a stellar view of the Rocket Garden—best paired with a locally-brewed “Space Dust” IPA if you’re over 21. Don’t miss the IMAX theater for a larger-than-life blast-off, or the bus tour to Saturn V Center, which will have you marking your calendar for the next real launch. It’s educational, it’s jaw-dropping, and it sets the tone for an adventurous Thursday in Orlando.  The Orlando Eye: Take in the City from New Heights  Nothing says “you’re in Orlando now” like a slow ride on The Orlando Eye, officially known as The Wheel at ICON Park. Soar 400 feet above the city and the entire I-Drive entertainment district comes into view. In one gentle revolution (about 20 minutes), you’ll spot theme parks, lakes, and on clear days, even the launch pads at Kennedy.  Thursdays are prime for visits—smaller crowds mean less waiting and more time to soak up those panoramic vistas in a climate-controlled capsule. The ride feels peaceful, with bubbles of excitement as you reach the top and see the Orlando sprawl stretch toward the horizon. For a treat, time your ride for sunset for dazzling golden skies, or go after dark and watch the city light up.  If you’re celebrating a special Thursday, look into the Sky Bar cabins serving up champagne or craft cocktails for a mid-air toast. Afterwards, take a stroll through ICON Park—neon-lit, buzzy, and full of fun places to grab a bite, from casual BBQ to upscale seafood. Don’t forget to snap that perfect selfie with the Eye behind you; it’s one of the city’s best backdrops!  WonderWorks: Mind-Bending Fun for All Ages  WonderWorks flips your Thursday upside-down—quite literally, thanks to the dazzling upside-down façade that greets you curbside. Part science museum, part playground, this attraction is a paradise for the eternally curious. Step inside and enter a world where imagination reigns: hurricane simulators, rope courses, lie detector tests, and laser tag await.  With fewer school groups on Thursdays, you can bounce from zone to zone with ease, challenging friends to the Mind Ball game or braving the Earthquake Café (we dare you to try the 5.3 Richter scale simulation with your coffee in hand!). The hands-on exhibits encourage everyone to play, learn, and laugh, making it the ultimate stop for energetic families or those young at heart.  Special mention goes to the Wonder Coaster ride (you build your own roller coaster and then “ride” it in VR!) and the Bubble Lab, where you can literally encase yourself in a giant bubble—your Insta followers will thank you. If you’re traveling with tweens or teens, this is the place to let them run wild before moving on to the next Orlando thrill.  Gatorland: Wild Encounters, Pure Florida Vibes  Nothing says “Orlando adventure” like meeting its most famous local residents—the gators! Gatorland is all about swampy fun, with thousands of alligators and crocodiles living their best lives across lush outdoor marshes and boardwalks. You’ll catch everything from fierce feeding demonstrations to gentle petting zoo encounters all under the supervision of expert trainers.  Thursdays are especially rewarding here—you’ll dodge the weekend crowds and get closer access to those “up close” experiences. Brave souls can sign up for Gatorland’s zipline, soaring above the gator ponds for a pulse-racing thrill (there’s even a wheelchair-friendly zipline for all to enjoy). The Screamin’ Gator Zip Line gives you heart-pounding goosebumps and a bird’s-eye view of the scaly action below.  Feeling less daring? Take it easy and wander the scenic swamp boardwalks or catch the Gator Jumparoo Show, where alligators leap for their lunch to the amazed cheers of the crowd. Kids can cool off at the fun splash pad, and the train ride offers a laid-back loop of the park for weary legs. Before you leave, try the onsite eatery’s fried gator bites—a quirky, only-in-Florida snack that, we promise, is tastier than it sounds!  Island H2O Water Park: Slide Your Way into Thursday  When the Florida sun starts blazing, nothing beats making a splash at Island H2O Water Park. This tech-savvy water park offers more than 20 unique rides, wave pools, and splash zones—plus an interactive app that lets you choose music, launch light shows, and snap digital memories while zipping down slides.  Come Thursday, the atmosphere is vibrant but mellow, making it blissfully easy to snag the best cabanas or race your mates down the “Hashtag Heights” slide without the long waits. Kids love the kid-friendly splash lagoons and lazy river, while thrill-seekers go straight for the multi-story drop slides and the Live Streaming Zone, which lets you broadcast your water-fueled exploits with friends back home.  Island H2O goes above and beyond with their immersive experience—there’s live DJ music, and with app-based wristbands, you even control what’s playing while you float. With plenty of food trucks on-site (tacos, burgers, ice cream—you get the vibe), you’re set for hours of watery fun. Don’t forget flip-flops and sunscreen!  Madame Tussauds Orlando: Strike a Pose  Get ready to rub shoulders with the rich and famous—well, sort of! Madame Tussauds Orlando offers a who’s-who of wax figures so lifelike, you’ll do a double-take. Snap a selfie with Taylor Swift, shoot hoops beside Shaquille O’Neal, chill with Morgan Freeman, or head to a space-themed area for your Buzz Aldrin shot.  The vibe is pure fun, with themed sets, props, and playful staff happy to help you capture your favorite poses. On Thursdays, you can take your time, make silly faces with the celebs, and enjoy the interactive exhibits with fewer folks crowding your shot. It’s as much about creativity as celebrity—set up your own “red carpet moment” or go for one of the quirky behind-the-scenes experiences.  If you’re with friends who love pop culture or have a teen obsessed with social media, this spot is a hit. Plus—it’s right next door to other I-Drive attractions, so you can double up with SEA LIFE Aquarium or The Orlando Eye for a half-day of laughs and “did that really just happen?” moments.  Disney Springs: Thursday Evenings, Live Music, and Sweet Treats  Wrap up your Thursday in Orlando with a trip to Disney Springs—the city’s premier entertainment, dining, and shopping district. As twilight falls, the place comes alive with live music on the patios, illuminated fountains, and venues buzzing with locals and tourists alike.  Thursday nights are perfect for exploring without the Saturday crush. Wander the waterfront, catch a set at the Waterview Park stage, or sit under the lights at The Boathouse with fresh oysters and an Old Fashioned. Got a sweet tooth? You can’t go wrong with cookies from Gideon’s Bakehouse or decadent chocolates at The Ganachery. For a quick dinner with standout flavor, try Polite Pig’s famous brisket or Wolfgang Puck’s signature pizza.  Love shopping? Find everything from Disney fashion to unique homewares and trendy jewelry—many shops stay open late. If you’re looking for a nightcap, wander over to Wine Bar George for top-notch pours, or sip a Florida ale at Dockside Margaritas. The night air is warm, the lights twinkle, and your Thursday feels absolutely magical.    Orlando on a Thursday? Unbeatable. You’ve got wild animal encounters, world-class amusements, foodie heavens, and experiences that turn a midweek day into something epic. Whether you’re orbiting rockets at Kennedy, gawking at gators, or living it up at Disney Springs, Thursday is your golden ticket to seeing the city’s bold, brilliant best. Party planning can be a lot of effort; however, Orlando kind of does all the hard work for us. If you’re looking to bring your birthday year in with a splash, why not head over to Universal’s Volcano Bay? A constituent of the Universal Resort, this place is recognized as one of the top aquatic attractions in North America. For those looking to celebrate their birthday with a little bit of excitement and adventure, this place pretty much has it all. You’ll be able to find everything from edgy thrill rides and tube slides to rapid rides and wave pools, all in one place. Still, for those members of the group who prefer to play it safe, the park also has a beach area and cabanas to chill under. In addition, there are a number of dining options, making this spot perfect for large parties. Bringing the good clean fun to the party, there’s nobody who doesn’t enjoy a good water park! Have Fun Outdoors Travelling with kids can be a difficult feat, let alone when there’s a birthday coming up. If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, you might want to check out the next item on our list. Perfect for bold and energetic youngsters, the Tree Trek Adventure Park changes up the scenery by providing a memorable experience set against the natural pine forests of Kissimmee. This experience involves tackling a challenging aerial obstacle course to truly get the adrenaline pumping. With around 100 different games, there’s plenty of fun to be had here. Have a Blast! If you’re having trouble picking an activity, why not go for something that everybody will enjoy? Located just north of the city, the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens offers a fantastic way to view animals in a kind and respectful way. Standing out from other zoological gardens you may have come across, this place acquires its name from the native gardens on which it is built. Orlando in April

One of the most exciting times in Orlando is spring when we start to see the city really open up. Offering all the same perks as the summertime, just without the unbearable heat, Orlando in April presents ample opportunity for adventure and exploration. Though the city is known for its famous theme parks, we assure you that this place isn’t a one-trick pony. Whether you’re a nature lover, an artsy type, or a foodie, you’re sure to find something to suit your tastes. From Riding Spaceship Earth at Epcot and photo opportunities at Madame Tussauds to relaxing walks through Kraft Azalea Garden and Disney Wilderness Preserve, here is how to make the most of your time in the city. See the Sites It would be a sin to make a trip to Orlando without visiting any of its famous theme parks. Owned and run by The Walt Disney Company. Epcot is the perfect place to spend time with friends and family. Standing out for its unique chosen theme, this place is dubbed as the ‘’permanent world’s fair’’, for its particular focus on human achievement and innovation. The park is divided into four neighborhoods, each with its own theme: World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature and World Showcase. Within each area, you’ll find shows, activities, and entertainment. Unlike other big theme parks, there are more attractions than there are rides at this place – but that's what makes for a truly unique encounter! Thoroughly iconic and undoubtedly different, this place provides the ultimate entertainment experience for those of all ages. For pop-culture lovers and film enthusiasts, the next item on our list is an absolute must. To capture the real essence of Hollywood right in the center of Orlando, there’s no better place to be than Madame Tussauds. Offering 6 separate display sections of popular celebrities, the establishment provides a great interactive experience for all visitors. The figures are pretty spectacular close up, paying close attention to detail whilst also embodying the true spirit of each person depicted. A super fun and unique attraction, this one is not to be skipped out on! In a place like Orlando, sometimes it can seem like the city is saying thing one and one thing only: ‘’visit our theme parks!’’ Still, if you do your research, you’ll find that the area is just as multifaceted as any other. A great stop for all creative types, the Cornell Fine Arts Museum seeks to preserve, display and exhibit artworks ranging from antiquity right through to the contemporary. Upon entrance, visitors can enjoy an expansive collection of over 5, 000 objects, including prints, drawings, sculptures and more. Highlights include Andy Warhol’s photographs and polaroids, and works by Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Get into Nature Though Orlando is perhaps most famous for its outlandish theme parks, it’s also home to some lush green spaces - you just have to know where to look! A total must-do for nature lovers, Kraft Azalea Garden is the perfect place for taking a balmy springtime stroll or watching the sunset over Lake Maitland. Billed as Winter Park’s Secret Garden, the property has less of a perfectly manicured feel, and more of a wild and romantic vibe. Open all year round, this area has magnificent cypress trees, a beautiful fountain, and of course, azaleas. April is a great time to visit since you’ll be able to spot beautiful egrets, mockingbirds and woodpeckers around the park. If you’re a seasoned visitor to the Sunshine State, you might just know about its beautiful landscapes. Hidden amongst the suburban stretch of South Orlando, the Disney Wilderness Preserve provides the perfect retreat from the city. Covering over 3,500 acres of restored wetlands, this place is an environmentalist’s paradise just waiting to be discovered. Home to over 1,000 species of plants and animals, this area showcases the unique southern ecosystem in all its glory. Make time for a tranquil walk through the forests, take an off-road buggy tour to learn more about the area, or catch a movie under the stars - the choice is yours! Whatever you choose to do, there’s no doubt it’ll be great. Relax! When touring, one of the best ways to get to know the area is by visiting a local market. Take advantage of the beautiful springtime weather and l like a local at Winter Park Famers’ Market. Held every Saturday afternoon, this place is known for purveying a wide array of organic veggies, artisan cheeses, and locally sourced honey. Although you probably won’t be taking home any produce, there are a lot of food and art vendors to choose from. Dive into the crowds, soak up the atmosphere and grab some lunch! If you’re looking to take a break from all of the buzz, why not head to the mall? Since its opening in 2002, the Mall at Millenia has become an Orlando favorite for spending some quality family time and slipping in all of that much-needed retail therapy. Located just south of downtown, the mall has over 150 stores to choose from, ranging from high-end luxury and in-demand brands to high-street stores. Whether you’re looking to browse, pick up some souvenirs for your loved ones back home, or just sit back and relax, this place has all you need for a bit of downtime. Set along the eastern coastline, Orlando is not a place to hole up indoors. The area caters to all types of travellers, and there are plenty of opportunities to discover something new. Orlando’s theme parks are a must – whether you love rollercoasters, waterparks, or animals, there's a little something for everybody here. If you're an outdoorsy type, then the area has many parks and preserves to be explored. For those looking for something a little more relaxing, there are a lot of cultural amenities and markets to check out. Whatever your pleasure, you’re sure to find something for you in the Sunshine State! Explore the city to its fullest with Go City’s All-Inclusive Pass or Explorer Pass.
