What you'll do
A 15-minute drive from the capital and at the foothills of the Dublin Mountains, Airfield Estate in Dundrum is a working dairy farm complete with woodlands, a vineyard and greenhouse gardens. From 1894 to 1993, it was the family home and working farm of the enterprising and generous Overend sisters, Letitia and Naomi, who left Airfield in 1994.
With a farm and dairy, food and ornamental gardens, café and heritage experience, Airfield is a wonderful opportunity to learn about food, farming, gardens, growing, history and heritage, in a natural and relaxed environment.
Overends café is a perfect place to enjoy a taste of Airfield on a plate with fresh seasonal vegetables, herbs, eggs, fruit, dairy produce and meat from the farm.
There are a range of activities that take place across the farm so be sure to check them out during your visit!
Woodlands and farmyard
Farmyard animals
Airfield's wide variety of farmyard animals includes sheep, pigs, chickens and donkeys, as well as laying hens, whose eggs are collected daily at 10AM for use in the Airfield restaurant.
Milking demonstration
For a true farming experience, visitors can watch the herd of Jersey cows being milked daily at 10.30AM before exploring the dairy parlor.
Facts
There are three themed gardens at Airfield; the Ornamental Gardens which are landscaped with exotic flowers, a walled garden and a tea garden, too – the perfect place for a sunny afternoon. There’s also the Greenhouse Garden which is great for teaching the kids all about the different types of plants before exploring the New Food Garden to inspire home-grown food and gardening of fresh fruit and vegetables.
