Described by The Kinks as a &lsquo;dirty old river&rsquo; in their love song to London Waterloo Sunset, the Thames &ndash; despite its muddy brown color &ndash; is now one of the cleanest urban rivers in Europe. Having played a significant role in the development of the city, landmark sites aren&rsquo;t thin on the ground.

Day 1 – Make the acquaintance of Old Father Thames

Just west of Westminster Millennium Pier, The Mall has been one of the centers for state ceremony since Buckingham Palace became the monarch&rsquo;s official residence. Stretching for approximately 1.5 kilometers in a perfectly straight line &ndash; an unusual occurrence for London &ndash; its eastern end is linked to Trafalgar Square via Admiralty Arch.

A top destination for art lovers, Trafalgar Square&rsquo;s public sculptures include Nelson&rsquo;s Column and those that reside on its fourth plinth. Left empty for decades, it was decided to open up its platform to temporary works of art. A giant blue cockerel and melting ice cream cone have each taken a turn.

A more comprehensive study of European art over the centuries can be enjoyed at the National Gallery, whose walls hang with a near-unending list of recognizable names, from Turner to da Vinci. The interconnected National Portrait Gallery displays the great and the good of British history.

Day 2 – Discover hundreds of years of history

One of the few London neighborhoods &lsquo;south of the river&rsquo; not unilaterally dismissed by those living in the traditionally well-to-do areas of north London is Greenwich.

Situated beside Greenwich Pier, it&rsquo;s the masts of the <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/attractions/cutty-sark" style="text-decoration:none">Cutty Sark</a> which welcome many visitors to the neighborhood. The last of its kind in the northern hemisphere, this sailing ship was a tea clipper holding the record for the fastest voyage between Shanghai and London, a journey of 3.5 months. It now provides an insight into life on the high seas in the 1800s carrying a cargo now synonymous with British culture.

But Greenwich&rsquo;s maritime history is far from done with the Cutty Sark alone. It contains priceless artefacts including the jacket Admiral Nelson was wearing when hit by a French sniper at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Day 3 – Head west to Greenwich

Think of London as a series of small villages &ndash; Notting Hill, Kensington and Covent Garden for instance &ndash; that eventually formed one megacity of over nine million people &ndash; and you can best understand why the ambience of one part of the capital can be so different from another.

Notting Hill&rsquo;s Portobello Road is very different in temperament from the independent stores and high-end pubs of Marylebone High Street. Its market runs in various forms throughout the week, with stalls from everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to household essentials. But it&rsquo;s the areas renown for antiques and vintage that attracts most people. To see it at its best &ndash; and busiest &ndash; try and coincide your visit with the weekend.

For some peace and tranquility after bargaining hard, Little Venice on Regent&rsquo;s Canal is a nice place to recharge with a coffee and a pastry. To continue the shopping spree there&rsquo;s Oxford Street and its cluster of well-known shopping destinations including Bond Street and Regent Street.

Then head to a time when none of London&rsquo;s modern attractions existed at the British Museum. Heathrow Airport needs no introduction. One of the busiest airports on the planet, it serves 80 airlines over 5 terminals, welcoming millions of people through its many doors every year. So, if you&#39;re flying into Heathrow, what are your travel options?

Heathrow Express Train

Heathrow has its own express train service that will get you into Central London - specifically Paddington Station, in around 15 minutes. So, it&#39;s easily the quickest way to get into town.

And, as the trains run from every terminal every 15 minutes, you&#39;re always guaranteed to be able to board one when you land. It is on the pricier side, with single tickets costing around &pound;25, but you get what you pay for.

London Underground

London&#39;s subway, known colloquially as &#39;the Tube&#39;, is a longer but more affordable way to travel from Heathrow into London.

The Piccadilly Line (the purple one) connects Heathrow to the city, with trains running every few minutes, and fares are about &pound;6.

Taxis

Taxis might be the most comfortable way to travel into London, but they&#39;re also the most expensive. However, if you&#39;re hauling a load of luggage, it will take the headache out of carting it around. After all, nothing quite beats being driven to your hotel door!

The trip itself will take around 45 minutes and will likely set you back &pound;60-70. So just be aware of that before you get in!

Private Hire Cars

An alternative to a taxi is a car hire service like Uber or Addison Lee. You&#39;ll need to download the appropriate app to book a car, but the benefit of doing so is that you&#39;ll know what you&#39;re paying before you get in. No meter - no hassle. It also doesn&#39;t pay for your driver to take the scenic route if they&#39;re not making any more money!

Heathrow Airport

Gatwick Airport is the second largest and most popular airport in London. Located about 30 miles south of Central London, it has two terminals that serve a wide range of domestic and international destinations.

Gatwick Express Train

Like Heathrow, Gatwick has its own express train. Given Gatwick is South of London, the train serves Victoria Station instead of Paddington. Like Heathrow, the Gatwick Express runs every 15 minutes and is non-stop, taking around half an hour to reach Victoria. Single tickets are only &pound;25 too, so it won&#39;t break the bank.

Southern is one of the many train companies that run in the south of England, and they run services from Gatwick too. These services reach many London areas, such as London Bridge and St. Pancras, giving you more options if you&#39;re heading somewhere specific. Trains take an average of 40 minutes, and tickets range from &pound;10-20.

National Express Coach

National Express is an English coach company that runs trips all over the country. That includes journeys from Gatwick to London, with lines taking passengers to both Victoria Coach Station and Liverpool Street.

It&#39;s a little on the longer side, with trip lengths varying from an hour to an hour and a half, for around &pound;10, it&#39;s cheap and cheerful.

Taxis and Private Hire Cars

If baggage is a bane, a taxi or car service might be a godsend. However, as Gatwick is further out than Heathrow, it could also be incredibly expensive. Depending on where you&#39;re going in London, you could be looking at paying upwards of &pound;100 for your trip. Ouch.

Gatwick Airport

London City Airport is arguably the most convenient of all the airports on this list, though its small stature (given it&#39;s in London) means it mainly serves Europe.

Docklands Light Railway (DLR)

As such, you can board the DLR, a train that runs from the airport into town. Like the tube, you can expect trains every few minutes, and it takes about 25 minutes to travel to Bank. You&#39;ll be in the thick of finance, but Bank also has plenty of connecting tube lines. A single trip should be no more than &pound;5.

Taxi or Private Hire Cars

Taxis and car services might be a better option from City, simply because of its proximity to Central London. Though be aware of things like the congestion charge and the traffic if your trip takes anywhere near Zone 1. Hopefully your trip will be about &pound;40, but check before you book.

Buses

You can even board one of London&#39;s famous red buses if you&#39;re traveling light. The 473 bus service runs between the airport and Stratford, while the 474 bus service runs between the airport and Canning Town. Pray for empty roads and you could be at your destination in no time. And, at just &pound;2 for the entire trip, it&#39;s the cheapest option going!

London City Airport

Luton Airport is the go-to destination for cheap airlines like EasyJet and RyanAir. It&#39;s not the most pleasant airport on this list, but you&#39;re not spending your vacation there, so who cares!

Train

Luton has its very own train station, Luton Airport Parkway, which is a stone&#39;s throw from the airport proper. Trains are pretty common and will take you to the likes of St Pancras, Farringdon, and Blackfriars. Journey times vary, but you won&#39;t be spending more than &pound;20.

Bus

There are also several bus services that serve Luton Airport, like the aforementioned National Express. Tickets are cheap, but journey times are long; you know the deal.

Taxis and Private Hire Cars

You could also book a taxi, but it&#39;s going to cost around &pound;100, so avoid if possible!

And finally, let&#39;s talk about Stanstead. Found approximately 40 miles north of Central London, it&#39;s another cheap airline favorite.

You can get a train directly to Liverpool Street in under an hour which is decent. It will set you back about &pound;25, but there are fewer alternatives from Stanstead, so it&#39;s worth considering.

Bus

Like the above, bus services do run from Stanstead into Central London. Tickets won&#39;t be more than &pound;15, but travel times may be agonizingly long.

The Best Time to Visit the Tower of London

Pass then, visitor, for all&rsquo;s well at the Tower of London, which has been standing solidly in place for almost 1,000 years. It&rsquo;s no wonder it&rsquo;s so popular with visitors &ndash; it&rsquo;s a piece of living history, where tourists can get up close to the crown jewels, see the famous ravens of the tower and meet a real-life Beefeater. It&rsquo;s extremely popular at any time of year &ndash; although some times are inevitably busier than others. To help you make a plan, this handy guide for when to visit includes:

Opening hours at the <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/products/explorer/attractions/tower-london" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Tower of London</a> operate under two main seasons: summer and winter. The summer season runs from March 1st through October 31st, when the Tower is open from 9am to 5:30pm every day, except on Sundays and Mondays when it opens at 10. Last admission is at 4:30pm, and the last Beefeater tour starts at 3:30. From November 1st through February 28 (or 29th) the Tower moves to winter opening hours, which are from 9am to 4:30pm (10am on Sundays and Mondays), with last admission at 3:30. Note that the Tower closes on some days over Christmas and New Year&rsquo;s, and may open late or close early on other days due to official events, such as gun salutes or the induction of a new Constable of the Tower. The safest thing to do is to check before you go to avoid being disappointed.

<h3>High and low seasons</h3>

January to March is the quietest time to visit the Tower, as tourist numbers are low, the weather is cold and wet and the evenings are dark. Any school holidays are busy times, and they last for two weeks at Easter and Christmas and for one week three times a year at half term. By far the busiest time is during summer holidays, from the end of July to the beginning of September. You&rsquo;ll get better weather and longer days, but you&rsquo;ll be competing with a lot of other people. September to October is a nice time to visit, as the weather remains mild and the crowd numbers go down before picking up again in December when the Christmas lights start to appear.

<h3>Entrances</h3>

As a fortified castle, the Tower of London has long been a shelter for the monarch against invading or rebelling armies &ndash; therefore there aren&rsquo;t many ways in or out! The main entrance for visitors is at the West Gate, opposite the Tower Shop, where you&rsquo;ll go through a security check before passing under the portcullis to enter the tower. However, before you can pass through security you&rsquo;ll need to have purchased your ticket, which you can get from the Tower Kiosk, Welcome Center or Group Ticket Office. The group entrance is on the south side near the river at the Middle Drawbridge, just down from Traitor&rsquo;s Gate. Many have come through Traitor&rsquo;s Gate over the years &ndash; including Sir Thomas More and the future Queen Elizabeth I &ndash; but not many of them ever came out again. Best avoid that one!

<h3>Best time to visit</h3>

Weekends and public holidays will always be busy, though you may also encounter busy times during the week as the Tower is very popular with school groups. These tend to arrive later in the morning, so your best bet is to arrive as early as possible. This is also a good idea if you want to see the crown jewels, as you&rsquo;ll have to line up again for them once you&rsquo;re inside. Although it&rsquo;s impossible to say for sure, on average the quickest times are mid-week mornings, when you may only have to queue for a few minutes. In the afternoons and weekends when queuing times are medium to high, expect to be waiting for at least 30 minutes and up to an hour.

<h3>How to skip the queue</h3>

There are a number of ways to get priority access to the Tower. You can pre-purchase your tickets online to save queuing at the ticket kiosk, or use an attraction pass such as the <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/products/explorer" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Go City Explorer Pass</a> to head straight to security. There are a number of combined entrance and guided tour packages available which will let you straight in &ndash; some of these also include priority access to the crown jewels exhibit. You can also skip the queue if you&rsquo;re a member of Historic Royal Palaces or if you attend a special access event &ndash; these include the Twilight Tour, held on some Sunday evenings, or the Ceremony of the Keys, when the tower is locked up every evening at 9:30. Both of these must be pre-booked.

<h3>Getting there</h3>

The Tower of London sits on the northern banks of the River Thames, west of the City of London next to St Katharine&rsquo;s Docks and adjacent to the unmistakable twin turrets of <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/products/explorer/attractions/tower-bridge" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Tower Bridge</a>. The fastest way to get there is via the London Underground to Tower Hill. If you prefer a scenic route, buses 15, 42, 78 and 343 will get you there, as will the <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/products/explorer/attractions/1-day-hop-hop-london-bus-tour" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour</a>. If you&rsquo;re coming by <a href="https://gocity.com/london/en-us/products/explorer/attractions/city-cruises-thames-river-pass" rel="noopener" target="_blank">boat</a>, the closest drop-off point is Tower Pier, or take the overground rail to Fenchurch Street or London Bridge and walk for around 10 to 15 minutes. If in doubt, use your maps app to plan a route, and keep in mind that the busiest times for public transport are between 8 and 9am and then again from around 4pm. Be prepared to stand if you&rsquo;re traveling at those times, or if you prefer to stretch your legs it&rsquo;s a pleasant 40-minute walk along the river from the Southbank Centre.

If you&rsquo;re heading to the Tower early there are plenty of coffee outlets around Tower Hill and London Bridge Stations where you can get your caffeine fix. Ideally you need a whole day to get the most out of your Tower visit, so plan on being here for lunch. There are two cafes and a kiosk in the tower grounds, and you&rsquo;re allowed to bring in food and drink which you can enjoy on certain lawn areas or benches around the grounds. If you&rsquo;ve worked up an appetite by the evening or fancy a leisurely pint or cheeky gin while you wait for the traffic to slow down again, there&rsquo;s the Tower Caf&eacute; just outside the exit on the riverbank; there also plenty of restaurants in the surrounding areas including a Wetherspoons, a Slug and Lettuce and an All Bar One.

History seeps from every cobblestone street and blade of grass in Greenwich. Its Sunday Special nights have been going strong since 2005, and often sees unadvertised performances from household names including Michael McIntyre and Flight of the Conchords.

Sometimes compared to a riverine version of the London Marathon, the Great River Race sees up to 300 oared craft race each other in a handicapped competition from Greenwich to Ham. Growing in popularity each September, every vessel is required to fly a flag and winners are not just those who cross the finish line first 34 kilometers later, but also those with the best fancy dress. Move over the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race!
September also sees the city wide Open House event, revealing usually hidden parts of Greenwich to the general public.
