What you'll do

Head to the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in the heart of Columbus Circle to discover New York culture at its contemporary best.

Step inside this striking building at the southwest corner of Central Park and feast your eyes on the latest in contemporary art and design.

Exhibitions across MAD’s four floors change frequently and include just about every form of art and design you can imagine. Furniture, ceramics, jewelry, clothing, sculpture, film, sound and performance… this place has it all. You’ll find everything from the classic to the outlandish here.

Previous exhibitions at MAD have celebrated Vera Neumann’s bold and colorful textile prints and British artist Brian Clarke’s stained glass. MAD has also hosted a retrospective of Beth Lipman’s complex glass structures.

On the top floor, stylish restaurant Robert has floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping views over Central Park – pop in for lunch and a cocktail. The shop sells a range of fine jewelry, crafts and sculptures, as well as smart MAD merchandise including mugs, fridge magnets and totes.

A few times during the year, MAD closes certain galleries to the general public to install new exhibitions. Please check MAD’s exhibitions page to explore what’s on view.

Wheelchair accessibility

The Museum is fully accessible for visitors with wheelchairs. All floors of the Museum are accessible by elevator. The Museum lobby is on the ground level with direct access to the street via one automated door.

Accessible, gender-inclusive restrooms are located on the Theater Level and Floors 6 and 7.

Manual wheelchairs are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the admissions desk in the lobby.

Please note:

Non-flash photography is encouraged throughout the museum, with a few exceptions. Sometimes an artist chooses not to allow images of their work to be distributed outside of the museum. In those cases, visitors must respect the artist's wishes. If you have any questions about which pieces are permissible to photograph, you can always ask a museum guard. No video or tripods please.

Can I bring food into the galleries?

No, food and drinks are not allowed in the galleries.

Can I bring my luggage into the galleries?

No luggage or large backpacks are permitted in the galleries. Free self-service storage lockers are available for visitors.
