On Memorial Day weekend, the Missions often host special programs, music, or living history events that honor the stories of the people who built San Antonio centuries ago. It’s the perfect setting to reflect on America’s past and soak up the quieter side of the city.  The Mission Reach trail links all five missions with a network of walking and cycling paths along the San Antonio River, so outdoor enthusiasts can mix a bit of culture with some fresh air and gentle exercise. Pro move: Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxed lunch in the shade, surrounded by wildflowers and the sound of birdsong. It’s a beautiful way to honor history while creating some new memories of your own.  Tower of the Americas: Sky-High Star-Spangled Views  Sometimes, you just want a jaw-dropping view of the city and all the Memorial Day fun unfolding below. This soaring 750-foot tower commands the San Antonio skyline and delivers sweeping 360° sights from its observation deck.  Memorial Day weekend here feels like a true celebration, with families snapping photos against a backdrop of blue skies, and kids racing to spot landmarks below. The revolving Chart House restaurant is a favorite for a holiday treat—a reservation at sunset means you’ll catch the city bathed in golden light, possibly with a fireworks show sparkling in the distance (if you’re lucky).  Interactive exhibits inside the tower share fun facts about San Antonio, so you might leave knowing a few things you didn’t expect—like where to find the best chili or which musician defined the city’s sound. Don’t skip the thrilling 4D Theater Ride on the ground floor for a quick adrenaline rush before you descend to street level for more Memorial Day adventures.  San Antonio Botanical Garden: Picnic, Play & Petals  Looking for a place to soak up all that May sunshine? The San Antonio Botanical Garden is perfect for a chill day of wandering, relaxing, and enjoying nature’s Memorial Day spread. This urban oasis covers 38 acres and bursts into color with Texas wildflowers, desert succulents, fragrant roses, and more.  Over the holiday weekend, garden staff often schedule family activities, guided walks, or pop-up workshops. Bring a blanket, order up some snacks from the garden’s on-site restaurant (like a picnic-ready charcuterie box), and settle in for a laid-back afternoon. If you want to burn off some barbecue, let the kids loose in the Family Adventure Garden, where water features, treehouses, and log climbers make them feel like outdoor explorers.  The glasshouse conservatories give you a mini tour of the world’s plants, while shaded benches offer a quiet spot to read, journal, or just reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day. The vibe shifts gracefully from lively laughter to peaceful contemplation—just what a public holiday should feel like.  Tejas Rodeo Company: Texas Traditions, Live  Need more action? You haven’t truly done San Antonio until you’ve spent an evening at a live rodeo. Tejas Rodeo Company, just outside the city, brings all your wildest Western fantasies to life every Saturday night (including Memorial Day weekend).  What sets Tejas apart? It’s the real deal—authentic cowboys, bucking broncos, and true Texas BBQ, all served up in an electrifying family-friendly atmosphere. Giddy up to the grandstands for classic rodeo feats like barrel racing, calf roping, and bull riding. The cheers of the crowd, the dust, the energy—it’s a rush, even if you’ve never touched a pair of boots in your life.  After the main event, a live country or Western swing band keeps the party going, with locals and tourists alike hitting the dance floor under twinkling patio lights. Don’t miss the on-site steakhouse for rib-sticking plates of smoked brisket and chili. A night at Tejas Rodeo isn’t just another outing—it’s an All-American tribute to the timeless culture that helped shape Texas.  The Witte Museum: Science, Stories & the Spirit of Texas  Curious types will love the Witte Museum, tucked along the river in lush Brackenridge Park. This isn’t just somewhere to escape the midday sun (though the AC is blessed relief in late May)—it’s a celebration of Texas, from prehistoric fossils to hands-on science exhibits and dazzling local art.  Over Memorial Day, the museum tends to bring out extra family programming, special exhibits, or create scavenger hunts that keep curious minds engaged. The exhibits take you through hundreds of millions of years, bringing alive stories of dinosaurs, Native American cultures, and pioneer inventors who put San Antonio on the map.  What’s really special is the H-E-B Body Adventure zone: think interactive health exhibits, a motion-capture running wall, and fun challenges that make everyone feel like a kid. And don’t forget to wander outside to the riverside amphitheater or enjoy seasonal festivals on the museum grounds. The Witte is both playful and meaningful—the perfect place for a thoughtful moment between all the celebration and outdoor adventures.  Memorial Day Events & Parades in Brackenridge Park  When it comes to public holidays, San Antonio knows how to throw a party—and nowhere is this more apparent than in Brackenridge Park. Every year, the park comes alive with Memorial Day celebrations: think parades with marching bands, military honor guards, local school performers, and endless food vendors.  Families bring blankets and camp chairs, kids get their faces painted, and everyone finds that spot of shade to relax and enjoy the show. The vibe is welcoming, inclusive, and full of pride. Veterans’ groups and civic organizations use the long weekend to honor those who served, with moving ceremonies at nearby monuments and plenty of community spirit.  After the parade, most people stick around to picnic or wander along the winding trails. Brackenridge is also home to the Japanese Tea Garden (which bursts with koi ponds, blooming trees, and wandering peacocks), making it a natural continuation of your day. On Memorial Day, the park feels like the beating heart of the city—a perfect place to soak up sunshine and San Antonio’s welcoming energy.  Fiesta Food: Tacos & Historic Markets  Ask ten locals how to celebrate Memorial Day, and at least eight will mention feasting—because in San Antonio, every holiday is a reason for a cookout or a taco crawl. All over the city, you’ll find BBQ joints puffing out smoke, beloved taquerias serving up their best, and bustling markets where you can sample it all.  If tacos are calling, stop at Garcia’s Mexican Food for their legendary smoked brisket tacos (hometown favorite!) or seek out El Milagrito’s breakfast tacos to fuel up before sightseeing.  Want to impress your friends back home? Drop by Historic Market Square. This three-block, open-air market buzzes with live music, rows of piñatas, and vendors grilling up chorizo-and-egg gorditas. Whatever you eat, wash it down with a cold agua fresca or a frosty margarita from Mi Tierra Café—their festive décor and twinkling lights scream celebration, day or night.  SeaWorld® San Antonio: Splashes, Rides & Red-White-and-Blue Fun  Ready for something extra splashy? SeaWorld® San Antonio rolls out the blue carpet for Memorial Day with special animal shows, patriotic-themed entertainment, and—if the weather’s right—even a jaw-dropping fireworks finale over the lake.  Spend the day zooming from incredible rides like the Great White coaster to family-friendly encounters with dolphins, sea lions, and penguins. There’s always live music, a parade of characters, and plenty of Texas-sized snacks to graze on between stops. If you’re traveling with little ones, the Sesame Street Bay of Play is a crowd-pleaser—think gigs, splash pads, and colorful rides (and yes, Elmo dance parties are as fun as they sound).  When it’s time for a break, settle into the shaded seating of the water ski stadium or grab a Dippin’ Dots from one of the friendly hawkers. Spooky Fun in San Antonio: Top Ways to Celebrate Halloween

San Antonio practically transforms into a living, breathing Halloween set once October hits. Twisted tales echo through historic streets, pumpkin patches spring up beside Spanish missions, and even the river seems to shimmer with a playful spookiness. Whether you’re after all-ages candy-crawls, spine-tingling ghost tours, or quirky Halloween festivals, this city offers a perfect blend of old-world mystery and new-school mischief. Ready to plan the ultimate Halloween trip in San Antonio? We’ve put together a fangtastic mix of eerie events, festive family fun, and hair-raising highlights to make sure your autumn adventure is anything but ordinary.  Our favorite ways to celebrate Halloween in San Antonio include:  Explore the haunted San Antonio Ghost Tours  Visit the San Antonio Zoo for ‘Zoo Boo!’  Scream through SeaWorld’s Howl-O-Scream  Discover the Natural Bridge Caverns Halloween events  Ride the River Walk with a spooky twist on the GO RIO Cruise  Take the San Antonio Botanical Garden’s Halloween stroll  Get playful at LEGOLAND® Discovery Center’s Brick-or-Treat  Shop (and nibble!) your way through Pearl Farmers Market Halloween  Enjoy a day at The Witte Museum’s Fall Family Festival  Grab creepy cocktails at a haunted downtown bar  Zoo Boo! at San Antonio Zoo: Family Frights & Animal Delights  For those traveling with little ones or simply craving a light-hearted take on Halloween, the San Antonio Zoo turns into a bustling, not-so-scary wonderland each October. Zoo Boo! is a citywide favorite—and it’s easy to see why.  Here, trick-or-treating trails wind past habitats filled with everything from hippos to howler monkeys. Pop-up carnival games and playful themed photo ops appear around every corner, inviting kids (and grownups) to don their best costumes and get in on the festivities. Even the animals get their share of the action: zookeepers often host pumpkin enrichment sessions, where creatures big and small eagerly pounce on their own jack-o’-lantern snacks. The whole zoo buzzes with a party vibe, decked out with hay bales, giant spiders, and glittering skeletons.  If you’re after lasting Halloween memories—without the nightmares—Zoo Boo! offers a safe, energetic, and thoroughly festive experience. Keep your eyes peeled for special events, like the daily costume contest or the Halloween parade that delights visitors of all ages. Best of all, the animals seem to be in on the fun, giving the whole event a festive wild streak.  Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld® San Antonio: For the Brave-Hearted  If your idea of Halloween runs closer to pulse-pounding scares and spine-tingling entertainment, then SeaWorld® San Antonio’s Howl-O-Scream delivers thrills by the bucket. This epic transformation of the park brings haunted houses, scare zones, and live shows after dark—all designed to leave you gleefully rattled.  Wander through the fog-filled “TERROR-tories,” where “monsters” and “stalkers” pop from every shadow. Brave the walking trails packed with twisted props and dedicated actors—each one perfect for adrenaline junkies and daring groups of friends. Fans of the macabre will love the variety: sinister haunted mazes, themed escape rooms, and jaw-dropping stage spectacles that blend circus acts with a dash of undead humor.  If you’re visiting with kids or those who prefer their frights on the milder side, SeaWorld cleverly offers daytime SeaWorld® Spooktacular fun—think colorful costumes, trick-or-treating, and toned-down Halloween games. But when the sun sets, it’s anything but tame. We recommend hitting the haunted attractions early, then rewarding your bravery with a churro or two while you watch zombies dance to pop hits under the park’s colored lights.  Natural Bridge Caverns’ Halloween: Spelunking and Spooks  For a celebration that’s both unexpectedly eerie and downright fun, Natural Bridge Caverns adds a splash of Halloween spirit to its famed underground adventure. Most Octobers, the site hosts themed events such as lantern-lit tours, a Halloween maze, and above-ground hayrides dotted with pumpkin patches.  What makes it special? The caverns themselves set an extraordinary scene—towering rock formations, echoing tunnels, and just enough mood lighting to make you shiver. Engage in Halloween games outside, try your hand at gem and fossil mining, or dress up for themed scavenger hunts. Down in the caves, flashlights cast long shadows as expert guides share both geological curiosities and tales teetering on the ghostly.  Back on the surface, the patchwork of pumpkins and interactive play areas create a festive, family-friendly vibe that delights adults and kids alike. It’s a blend of adventure and celebration that brings Halloween to life underground and above.  Haunted River Rides: Spooky Sights on the GO RIO Cruise  The San Antonio River Walk is enchanting any night of the year, but it truly shines with a playful spookiness during Halloween. Step aboard one of the GO RIO River Cruises during October and you’ll find boats decked out in cobwebs, jack-o’-lanterns, and other ghoulish décor. Your guides don costumes and share haunting stories—as only locals can—about mischief and mystery along the riverbanks.  The evening cruises often feature Halloween-themed music, ghost stories set against the city’s lighted bridges, and a little friendly interaction as the boats “compete” for best holiday spirit. Don’t be surprised if you spot costumed paddleboarders or families parading in masquerade down the River Walk—everybody gets into the festivities.  Why do we love this experience? It offers a fun, accessible way to get swept up in the city’s Halloween energy—all while relaxing on the water. Couples, families, and solo explorers alike will find plenty to enjoy, from the twinkle of festive lights to the cheer of costumed crowds along the banks.  Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND® Discovery Center  If you’re traveling with kids (or you’re simply young at heart), make tracks for LEGOLAND® Discovery Center’s Brick-or-Treat weekends. Each Saturday and Sunday in October, this imaginative indoor play space transforms into a playful pumpkin patch, splashed with Halloween colors and LEGO® creations.  The festivities include hands-on building challenges (think glow-in-the-dark ghosts and custom jack-o’-lanterns), scavenger hunts through Miniland’s haunted landmarks, and dance parties led by costumed characters. Little monsters can don their costumes and nab a sweet treat during trick-or-treating parades. For younger children, the event offers a safe, energetic, and inventive way to channel the spirit of Halloween—minus the jump scares.  Why does this stand out? Parents and kids can play together, learn a few fun building tricks from the “master model builders,” and escape any chilly late-October weather. The vibrant, friendly staff always go the extra mile to make every family laugh—bonus points for their elaborate costumes and endless supply of candy!  Trick-or-Treat at Pearl Farmers Market  Every Saturday in October, Pearl Farmers Market dons its autumn best for a crowd-pleasing day of Halloween fun. Locals love this tradition: the historic Pearl Brewery district’s chic urban landscape is reinvented with pumpkins, colorful bunting, and plenty of treats for foodies and kids alike.  What sets Pearl’s Halloween apart is its lively, community vibe. Little ones parade in costume down the paths, gathering candy from smiling market vendors (many of whom get in the spirit with elaborate outfits). Parents can sample local cheeses, spicy tamales or the market’s addicting signature apple cider donuts. Pop-up face painting, live folk bands, and quirky photo booths round out the scene.  The district’s trendsetting restaurants, like the stylish Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery, join the fun too. Try the fried chicken with a seasonal pumpkin beer or snag a patio table for brunch—perfect fuel before more spooky adventuring. This is a spot where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re in full costume or just there for coffee and sunshine.  The Witte Museum’s Fall Family Festival  San Antonio’s treasured Witte Museum knows how to do autumn right. Its annual Fall Family Festival sees science, history and spooky stories collide, making it perfect for curious minds of all ages. Kids can dress up and join in hands-on games, creative workshops, and scavenger hunts throughout the museum’s natural history exhibits.  Signature festival features often include fossil digs, slime-making tables, and “spooky science” demonstrations—think dry ice experiments, glowing potions, or edible insects (if you dare!). The museum also decks out its gardens and courtyards with displays of local flora, autumn décor, and activity tents.  It’s a surprisingly dynamic celebration—equal parts education and entertainment. Kids leave with pumpkin-themed crafts, fun facts, and maybe even a new fascination with Texas wildlife or ancient history. For travelers, it’s a one-stop shop for a family-friendly, seasonal experience that feels uniquely San Antonian.  Creepy Cocktails and Haunted Bars Downtown  Ready for a grown-up Halloween twist? Downtown San Antonio buzzes with characterful bars—some so historic, they’ve got stories (and spirits) of their own. Make your way to The Esquire Tavern, where the Prohibition-era décor, flickering candlelight, and craft cocktail menu create a moody retreat from the Halloween bustle. Their ‘Coffin Nail’ made with mezcal and house-made bitters, is a smoky, spicy treat—just the thing to toast your night’s adventures.  Venture on to the Menger Bar, inside the Menger Hotel, for a brush with history. It claims visits from Teddy Roosevelt and a few less corporeal guests! The bar leans into its ghostly reputation with velvet chairs, gilded mirrors, and a bourbon selection locals rave about. Many Halloween weekends, bars offer costumed karaoke, special themed brews, and parties that run late into the night, so don’t be shy about joining the revelry.  Roundup: Your Spook-tacular San Antonio Adventure Awaits  Whether you’re seeking haunted history, pumpkin-packed parties, or creative costume parades, San Antonio brims with Halloween experiences for every traveler. By blending centuries-old stories with playful new twists, this Texas gem proves that the best Halloween memories are made with just a little local spirit. So book a tour, pack your fangs (or fairy wings), and get ready to fall under San Antonio’s spell this October!    Like that? People Watching in San Antonio: Our Favorite Vibrant Locales

San Antonio buzzes with character, and sometimes the best way to get to know her is to simply grab a seat and watch who walks by. Whether you’re here for the family fun, foodie finds, or classic sights, nothing captures the spirit of the city like staking out a sunny patio or riverfront bench and tuning in to the ever-changing parade of locals, travelers, musicians and Mavericks fans. From bustling plazas to leafy parks, playful museums to lively river walks, we've rounded up San Antonio’s top places for people watching. Come snack or sip, enjoy local color, and soak up the city’s dynamic rhythm—these scenes make every pause worth it.  Our favorite places to people watch in San Antonio include:  The San Antonio River Walk  Historic Market Square (El Mercado)  Pearl District  The Alamo Plaza  Main Plaza & San Fernando Cathedral  San Antonio Zoo  Southtown Arts District  La Villita Historic Arts Village  Hemisfair Park & Yanaguana Garden  Tower of the Americas  Historic Market Square (El Mercado): A Fiesta of Flavors and Faces  Market Square, just west of downtown, packs in three blocks of vibrant culture—and phenomenal people watching. Known as the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, this plaza is always in full swing: bustling food stalls, souvenir hawkers, local dancers, musicians, and families celebrating milestones over plates of enchiladas. The soundscape? Mariachi melodies, shopkeepers chatting in Spanish, the sizzle of fajitas on the grill, and the occasional “¡buen provecho!” from a friendly stranger.  Start at Mi Tierra Café & Bakery, open since 1941 and famous for its festive décor and equally colorful clientele. Order a café con leche and a sugar-dusted pan dulce, and watch the world come in to celebrate birthdays, close deals, and share a laugh. Outside, Market Square hums with energy—kids running between the stalls, visitors sampling fresh fruit cups, and local artisans painting ceramics on the spot.  Visit during weekends or city festivals (especially Fiesta San Antonio) and Market Square turns into an extra lively stage. Stay long enough and you’re guaranteed to catch a dance performance, a folklorico dress twirling, or another family gathering snapped for posterity.  Pearl District: See and Be Seen in San Antonio’s Trendy Hood  In the revitalized Pearl District, people watching comes with a gourmet twist. This former brewery complex is now a hub for culinary adventurers, stylish locals, dog walkers, and creative types making the most of sprawling lawns and riverside patios. On weekends, the Pearl Farmers Market adds plenty of flavor: shoppers with armfuls of flowers, kids slurping paletas, and chefs picking up just-harvested greens. Don’t miss the taco trucks and savory empanadas!  Find a table at Local Coffee, Bakery Lorraine (don’t leave without a slice of quiche), or outdoors at Southerleigh, and keep an eye out for the who’s who of San Antonio’s creative class. This is the place to watch as foodies, families, and entrepreneurs chat about everything from BBQ sauces to art installations. In the evenings, the brewery patios fill up with laughter, clinking glasses, and live music echoing out over the lawn.  Take a riverside stroll or linger under the twinkle lights—with Pearl’s bustling vibe, every bench is a seat at the theater of San Antonio style.  The Alamo Plaza: A Crossroads of History and Humanity  No visit to San Antonio is complete without stopping at The Alamo—and half the fun is observing the parade of visitors from all over the globe. Grab a shady spot on the plaza’s benches and watch as school groups, costumed reenactors, selfie enthusiasts, and lifelong Texans all bask in the mythos of this legendary site.  The plaza pulses with energy: guides in 1800s gear lead curious groups, bikers coast past on rental cycles, and hawkers selling snow cones call out to overheated crowds. When festivals or commemorations are in full swing, expect period costumes, live music, and families marking one-of-a-kind birthdays or reunions. It’s the ultimate crossroads—historic backdrop, modern city buzz, and a steady stream of characters eager to say they “remember the Alamo.”  Swing by early for a calm start, or catch the afternoon when performers, musicians, and tourists in wide-brimmed hats fill the space. Don’t forget to say hello to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas—likely mingling with just as much passion for people watching as you are.  Main Plaza & San Fernando Cathedral: San Antonio’s Civic Stage  Main Plaza centers on downtown’s heart, anchored by the grand San Fernando Cathedral. Come here to watch San Antonio’s rhythm unfold before you, from lunch-hour professionals to musicians strumming in the sun. The plaza’s lively fountain splashes while local office workers picnic, skateboarders practice tricks, and children squeal happily under the water jets.  On weekends, food trucks gather, churchgoers catch up on the steps, and couples find a bench for an ice cream cone. Visit in the early evening for San Antonio | The Saga, a mindblowing light show projected onto the cathedral’s façade that draws both locals and travelers. The atmosphere buzzes as visitors gather—kids in strollers, sweethearts hand in hand, families sprawled out on blankets.  Take in the city’s vibrant melting pot, and don’t be surprised if you leave with a new friend or two. This is very much where San Antonio comes together, in all its lively, laid-back spirits.  Southtown Arts District: Creative Vibes on Parade  San Antonio’s Southtown is an offbeat, artsy stretch that draws musicians, artists, and spirited free-thinkers for good reason. Settle into a sidewalk seat at a café (Halcyon Coffee Bar’s s’mores kits are as fun to watch as they are to eat) or take a slow stroll down South Alamo. You’ll spy mural artists, bicyclists with fairy lights clipped to their wheels, and families with rescue pups in bandanas.  First Friday art walks turn this neighborhood into a moving festival—galleries swing open their doors, food trucks queue up, and a carnival mood fills the air as shoppers, art students, and musicians mingle on the streets. Even on quieter days, Southtown brings out plenty of characters: imagine storytellers weaving tales on a colorful stoop, jugglers bringing laughter to the strip, or vintage music fans swapping records at friendly dives.  The Southtown scene encourages connection—don’t just watch, chat with a local, and you might end up with a tip for the next under-the-radar gallery opening.  La Villita Historic Arts Village: Watch Makers at Work  Historic La Villita feels like stepping into a friendly village of ateliers and colorful courtyards, with artisans at work and visitors peering curiously inside the shops. Here, the people-watching is all about creativity and craft. Makers etch silver jewelry, painters touch up their latest canvases, and local glassblowers dazzle crowds with spinning flame and molten colors.  Find a shady bench and watch couples stumble across the perfect handmade ceramic, school kids enthralled by a potter’s wheel, and photographers zeroing in on perfect alleyway light. The pace is relaxed, the energy welcoming, and the people you’ll see here make this corner of San Antonio especially warm.  If you visit during a festival or market weekend, the village blossoms with stalls, performers, and food carts. Grab a homemade lemonade, listen to a folk musician, and soak in all the creative energy swirling past.  Hemisfair Park & Yanaguana Garden: Playful Scenes Unfold  If you want the pulse of San Antonio’s families, artists, students, and young-at-hearts, Hemisfair Park and Yanaguana Garden are your living room. Children dart through splash pads, parents lounge under shade sails, and students with sketchbooks claim the best corners. The park’s layout—fountains, climbing structures, ping pong tables, and whimsical art—means there’s never a dull moment.  The people watching peaks on weekends and late afternoons, with birthday parties, leash-free puppy reunions, and outdoor yoga classes all in the mix. Food trucks and Paleteria San Antonio serve out blink-and-it’s-gone mango chamoy and prickly pear popsicles, while a rotating calendar of events keeps the lawns lively.  Stop by CommonWealth Coffeehouse for a pastry and prime patio seat—this spot gives you both excellent espresso and an unbeatable vantage on Hemisfair’s playful buzz. Don’t be surprised if you end up joining in a game or taking a turn on the oversized chess boards. People here love a newcomer!  Tower of the Americas: A 360° Look at the City in Motion  Take your people watching to the sky at Tower of the Americas. The panoramic views from this soaring observation deck let you survey all of downtown’s action at once. From above, you’ll see wedding parties snapping portraits in the gardens, clusters of giggling kids jockeying for “best view” status, and the endless loop of visitors taking selfies above the skyline.  Time your visit for sunset, when the changing city light brings families, locals, and adventurous photographers all aiming for the money shot. For ground-level people watching afterwards, the surrounding Hemisfair grounds offer plenty of post-tower chatter, food stalls, and bubbly plaza activity. Up top, the rotating Chart House restaurant hands you a show with your dinner—watch celebrations unfold, kids pressing their faces to the glass, and couples toasting a great trip.  The blend of big-city excitement, park-side relaxation, and friendly crowds guarantees entertainment at every altitude.    San Antonio always delivers something to look at, someone to chat with, or a street scene to inspire your camera roll. Whether you like your people watching with a croissant in a leafy square, a margarita along the water, or a front-row spot at a bustling plaza, these locations let you see the city’s bright and ever-surprising character up close. Sit back, take it all in, and let San Antonio’s vibrant spirit do the rest.    Want more?
