Overview

This magnificent Tudor palace looks like it was plucked from the pages of a storybook. Hampton Court was Henry VIII’s favourite royal hangout, and it was lavishly decorated by two luxury-loving kings, so you can expect priceless paintings, fine tapestries and gold just about everywhere. There are even a couple of resident ghosts to look out for as you’re touring the haunted rooms.

Explore the private royal apartments, the chapel, and the Tudor kitchens which were built to feed over 1,000 court staff. See a replica of Henry VIII’s crown in the Royal Pew and step into the Great Hall where some of Shakespeare’s plays were performed for the first time. Once you’ve explored the palace interiors, head outside to enjoy the impressive manicured gardens and get lost in the world-famous hedge maze.

Hampton Court Gardens

The entire park covers 750 acres and the gardens cover 60 acres. Here you’ll find the Great Vine, the Privy Garden which is a recreation of the 1702 garden for King William III, and Home Park which is home to deer and wild birds. There’s also the famous palace maze – originally planted in 1690, it’s made up of half a mile of winding passages between 7ft high yew tree hedges.

The Great Vine

Originally planted in 1769, the vineyard has long been a highlight of Hampton Court Palace. The vine still produces an annual crop of grapes which are usually ripe after the August Bank Holiday.

Chapel Royal

The palace’s chapel still delivers traditional services throughout the year and is a striking example of baroque architecture. It was here in 1540 where Archbishop Canmer presented Henry VIII with the letter accusing his fifth wife Katherine Howard of adultery.

Tudor Kitchens

Hampton Court Palace was already considered a modern palace when it was first built, complete with a 36,000 square foot kitchen. It was continuously expanded between 1530 and 1737, and was said to cater to over 600 people twice a day, as well as prepare huge royal banquets.

Tennis Courts

The first tennis court at Hampton Court Palace was built for Cardinal Wolsey in the 16th century. Henry VIII was a keen tennis player who loved getting out on the court. The court’s viewing gallery is only open to the public during the summer months.

Facts

Hampton Court Palace is rumoured to be haunted by a screaming female ghost, thought to be the ill-fated fifth wife of Henry VIII – Katherine Howard.
William Shakespeare and his company the King’s Men performed several places for King James I in the Great Hall.
Three of the walls surrounding the original tennis court date back to the 17th century, one being an original of Cardinal Wolsey’s time.
The only wife of Henry VIII who survived the marriage without execution, divorce or death was Catherine Parr, who Henry married at Hampton Court Palace in 1543.

Getting in

On arrival at Hampton Court Palace, head to the central arch at the end of the main driveway to have your pass scanned. Once your pass has been validated, you’ll be issued a paper ticket, which will allow you to enter and re-enter the Palace grounds on your visit that day.

Busy tip

Pass customers do not need to book in advance to visit Hampton Court Palace. Please be aware that at busy times, you may be asked to wait for the next available time slot. We recommend visiting in the afternoon for the best visitor experience.

Is there a dress code for Hampton Court Palace?

There’s no specific dress code for visiting Hampton Court Palace. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing is a good idea, particularly if you’re planning to explore the extensive gardens.

Visitors are asked to dress respectfully, and costumes aren’t permitted unless they’re part of an event organised by Historic Royal Palaces.

Does the royal family still own Hampton Court Palace?

Yes, but not as a private residence. Hampton Court Palace is owned by The King in Right of Crown, meaning it is held in trust for the monarch and the nation rather than being the King’s personal property.

The Palace is managed by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces and is open to visitors throughout the year.

Do you have to pay to park at Hampton Court Palace?

Yes, parking at Hampton Court Palace is paid and spaces are limited, with parking available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The on-site car park costs around £2 per hour, payable by card or via the Glide app. There are also nearby parking options if the Palace car park is full.

Is there a cafe at Hampton Court Palace?

Yes, Hampton Court Palace has several places to eat and drink.

The Tiltyard Café serves coffees, teas, cakes, sandwiches, soups, salads and hot meals, while the Privy Kitchen Café offers lighter bites including sandwiches and pies. There are also seasonal kiosks and ice cream carts around the Palace.

I would never have thought of visiting this palace if it had not been for the London Pass / Go City App. But it sounded interesting, so me and my 20 y.o. son went there for an afternoon and even though I do not consider myself an expert on history, this trip was more than worthwile. The whole building is so impressive, the audio guide is really great and informative, all the paintings and decorations and luxury is overwhelming, as is the huge park and garden. Not to forget, the old grapevine which I had not expected to be SUCH a giant. Also the maze was really fun. I can only recommend visiting Hampton Court Palace and I am really lucky I found this place in the London Pass. I would definitely visited again, only I would plan plenty more time!

Grand Tudor palace and gardens . Obviously full of history with plenty to read, see and hear about . Beautiful peaceful gardens. We could’ve spent all day here. Arrived early and there was plenty of on site parking. Surrounding area has plenty to explore including walks along the river bank.
