Facts

  • The Christian bishop Saint Denis was decapitated on the hill of Montmartre in 250 AD by the Romans.

  • Montmartre was outside Paris' city limits until 1 January 1860 when it was annexed to the city and became part of the 18th arrondissement of Paris.

  • Artists set up easels and tables near the Sacré Cœur basilica each day amongst the colorful setups of the Place du Tertre.

  • The Moulin Rouge was founded in 1889 and became the birthplace of the French cancan.

  • There's a small vineyard in Montmartre with a yield of approximately 500 liters a year.
