Facts
Vaxholm Fortress was the pirate fort in one of the Pippi Longstocking movies
Until 1926 Vaxholm was only accessible by boat before a car bridge was built
S/S Stockholm was built back in 1931 and can carry 300 people.
Did you know?
Vaxholm is an idyllic and cozy harbor town where you walk among the local, charming shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants and easily spend a day. Enjoy the quiet cobbled streets and wooden buildings, typical architecture of the city. Did you know, wood was the only building material allowed in Vaxholm by law up until 1912? Vaxholm Fortress (Fästning) is the most impressive historic building in Vaxholm, situated on a small island opposite the town of Vaxholm. The Fortress was built in the 1540s as part of the new defense along the Swedish coast and as a safeguard of Vaxholm and Stockholm, the Swedish capital. The Fortress museum has fascinating exhibits and films teaching you more about the military history of Sweden.
