Birka was built in the 700s at Björkö, and is Sweden’s first Viking city. Today the archaeological area of Birka is part of UNESCO’s world heritage list. Learn about the huge excavations and research that’s taken place at Björkö to piece together this historic area.

Birka - The Viking City by Boat highlights

    Museum
At the museum at Birka you can learn more about the exciting history of Vikings through the fascinating exhibitions which depict what day to day life in Birka would have been like during Viking Age. Discover the archaeological findings from the excavations and join a guided tour to really understand this important part of Stockholm’s and Birka’s history.

    Viking houses
The Viking houses at Birka are perhaps the most popular attraction. Admire the reconstructed houses built with the same techniques as the Vikings to really bring to life the true atmosphere of life in the Viking age. Walk through the reconstructed Viking village and you’ll be transported back in time to the 700s.
