Overview
See the historic windmills of Zaanse Schans on a day trip from Amsterdam. This magical Dutch village contains eight mills, mostly relocated here from around the country, that give a fascinating glimpse into what life was like in 18th- and 19th-century Holland. Not only that, the colorful wooden facades and sails of these mustard, oil, dye and saw mills will jazz up your Instagram feed no end, particularly in spring when the grounds are carpeted with a rainbow of tulips.
There’s plenty to see and do alongside the iconic windmills. Your pass includes a tasting session at the cheese factory and a visit to the traditional clog-making workshop. There are also several more museums to explore, including the Zaans Museum, where interactive exhibits tell the story of the village’s past, and the 17th-century bakery – still in operation – where you can sample traditional duivekater, a sweet bread that’s best served with coffee and lashings of butter!

Facts
The windmills and quaint wooden houses at Zaanse Schans date from the 16th Century onwards. The majority were relocated here for preservation in the 1960s and 70s, but two are Zaanse Schans windmills in their original sites.
In addition to the windmills there are seven museums at Zaanse Schans, including the Jisper House, the Bakery Museum and the Zaan Time Museum.
Some of the mills at Zaanse Schans are still operational, including De Kat, a former oil mill which is now the world’s only functioning paint-producing windmill.

Great option!
JessThe transfer is a great option if you’re looking for an easy and flexible way there. We were there from the 10:30 bus and got on the 1:00pm return. The return times were 1,2:30,3:15 and 5:30. We walked around, went up two windmills(7.50pp, or there is an all inclusive package if you want to do multiple), went to the cheese museum(free with samples) went to the clog museum (free and they have a demonstration which we did not see but I’ve seen videos and it looks pretty cool) and had a coffee. The town is very cute and the active windmills are super cool. I saw other transfer options were $9.60 per person round trip, so this is one of the lesser value options, but we needed to do one more thing so it worked out. Our 1:00pm return bus was 20 minutes late, not that big of a deal I just wouldn’t schedule your day super tight just in case

Tourist Trap
JulsNot worth it. The place is a tourist trap and only worth going if you have the I Amsterdam pass. The GoCity card only gets you there, but you have to pay to do anything or see any museums

Clogs, Mühlen und Souvenirs
PedroGanz kurz gesagt: Man muss hier einmal gewesen sein, um sich die Landschaft anzuschauen. Aber das ist dann auch alles. Souvenirs und Essen kann man auch woanders besorgen. Im Sommer ist es bei der Hitze ziemlich anstrengend zu laufen – besonders wenn man mit Kleinkindern oder Senioren unterwegs ist. Es gibt sehr wenig Schatten. Für Rollstühle ist es zwar grundsätzlich geeignet, wegen des unebenen Untergrunds und der vielen Leute aber nur bedingt. Die Henri-Willig-Käserei bietet nichts Spezielleres als das, was man schon im Laden in Münster sehen und probieren kann. Der Unterschied ist nur, dass man sich in Zaanse Schans wegen der vielen Menschen kaum bewegen kann. Die Clogs-Fabrik würde ich als das eigentliche Highlight bezeichnen. Die Besichtigung ist empfehlenswert, aber alles andere ist nur okay. Man bekommt außerdem 10 % Rabatt im Restaurant De Kraai. Das kann man nutzen, aber 10 % sind nicht viel. Die verschiedenen Pfannkuchen waren lecker, die Getränke aus dem offenen Kühlschrank natürlich nicht kalt genug. Der Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus bei der Hinfahrt war gut, bei der Rückfahrt jedoch eine echte Sauna ohne Klimaanlage. Wenn man alleine dahin geht hat man den Discount nicht, und auch nicht den Eintritt zu einigen Museen. Aber auf jeden Fall billiger.
