What you'll do
You’ve heard of flashy King Tut. Now meet Ramses II, whose 66-year reign over Ancient Egypt in the 13th Century BC dwarves that of his predecessor, in terms of length, legacy ostentation and self-regard – Ramses didn’t miss the chance to build many great monuments in his name (and image) along the way.
It’s King Ramses II (aka Ramses the Great)’s long reign, enduring legacy and, of course, priceless bling that’s being celebrated here at Battersea Power Station’s purpose-built NEON exhibition space.
Step back in time as you eyeball some 180 treasures and antiquities on loan from the Egyptian Museum Cairo. We’re talking gold death masks and ornate silver coffins from the royal tombs at Tanis, perfectly preserved cat, dog and mongoose mummies, monumental sculptures, and priceless amulets, rings, earrings, and necklaces.
Along the way you’ll learn all about Ramses the Great’s military strategies and empire-building, as well as discovering the enduring dynasty and mythologies he left behind.
Highlights
The Coffin of Ramses II
A true ‘wow’ exhibit – Ramses the Great’s perfectly preserved 3,000-year-old wooden coffin sees the pharaoh represented as Osiris, god of the underworld.
The Limestone Colossus
Cutting an imposing figure in carved limestone, Ramses is depicted here wearing a regal headdress and false beard, with a dagger concealed in his belt.
The Battle of Kadesh
A virtual digital animation depicts one of the largest battles from Ramses II’s reign, a conflict that led to the world’s earliest known peace treaty.
