The party never stops at Mardi Gras World - because every day is Mardi Gras. Step into the studio of famed float and costume designer, Roy Kern, and disappear into a world of fabulous floats. There are hundreds to see, from 1950s floats to present day creations. Kern is known for his quirky, colorful designs and, at his studio, you’ll be able to take a tour through some of his best work and see up-and-coming artists working on floats for the next celebration.
You'll get a chance to get into the festival spirit too - take a twirl in a costume and tuck into a complimentary slice of Louisiana-style King Cake.
In the beginning, Mardi Gras was celebrated with fancy balls and exclusive high-society events. As time went on, it was molded into the event we know and love today - a parade and celebration of life. Mardi Gras participants would plan for months and months, designing and building extravagant floats, costumes, and masks for the event. Fast forward a couple thousand years and it's still as big of a deal as it once was. New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebration typically takes place on a Tuesday in March, complete with a seemingly infinite procession of top-notch floats, krewes (groups of Mardi Gras goers), and people dressed to the nines in colorful garb.
If you can’t make it to New Orleans for the actual event – a trip to Mardi Gras World is the next best thing.
