About this experience

Your visit to the Condé Museum at the Château de Chantilly is truly stepping back in time.

The museum is the work and gift of the Duke of Aumale, one of the greatest art collectors of his time. Per the Duke’s wishes, the museum remains as it was in 1886 when it was bequeathed to the Institut de France including rooms remodeled specifically as museum spaces.

The collection of paintings is among the most important in France and consists predominantly of Italian and French art. You will want to see the works of masters including Raphel, Fra Angelico, Nicolas Poussin and Antoine Watteau.

Bibliophiles should check out the library including 1,500 manuscripts, of which 200 are illuminated in the International Gothic style. Also check out the Chantilly Codex, a primary manuscript of medieval music.

  • Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, which is possibly the most famous best surviving example of manuscript illumination, can be found at the Condé Museum
