What you'll do

With its comprehensive selection of artifacts, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of Mediterranean civilizations, spanning from the early traces of human activity in Mesopotamia and Egypt to the development of early Christian and Islamic cultures. Housed in a former bank building from 1905, the museum's neo-classical interior is a noteworthy example of Scandinavian architectural history and adds to the museum's allure.

The museum's origin dates back to 1954 when it was founded through the merger of the Cyprus collections and the Egyptian Museum. Its collections primarily consist of archaeological materials from Swedish excavations in the Mediterranean region, particularly from the Swedish Cyprus expedition conducted between 1927 and 1931. Additionally, the museum boasts artifacts collected by Swedish royalty, diplomats, and travelers. Its central location in Stockholm makes it a vibrant hub for discussions, debates, and cultural experiences, often highlighting current events from the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Southern Europe.

The museum's permanent exhibitions cover a wide range of topics and regions. Visitors can explore the history and culture of Cyprus, Ancient Greece and Rome, and the Near East. The Islamic Art section showcases exquisite artifacts from various periods, while the Gold Room dazzles with its collection of precious metal items. The Expedition exhibit provides insights into the archaeological journeys that uncovered these treasures, and the study gallery offers a space for deeper exploration and learning about the museum's collections.
